@@antomcmanus1775 hi, what is confusing? A scale is a succession of notes. The mode is how this succession must be. Read the modes in C major, then it's enough to transpose. This is true for a lot of instruments.
This is amazing ! Thank you. I’m a classical pianist and music teacher. I’ve been dabbling in jazz and yearning to learn it w these kind of exercises that make TOTAL sense. And they’re really fun and accessible. Looking forward to watching more. KUDOS!!! 🎉
Fantastic practice suggestions, Jonny. You just gave more to advance my playing than I have ever gotten in ten years of being on the lookout. These are very approachable and rewarding routines, and you have already made me a better player... there is HOPE! Robert in Oregon
Man. I was in a pretty dark place. Your channel has changed my life. I'll make a weekly exercise schedule of your lessons and start truly practicing. There's still hope. Thank you so much and God bless you! ❤
You are fantastic! I'm Italian but your way of teaching is the best to understand jazz. Well done! I'm a beginner and with you I want to learn. Greetings Claudio
Ok, so as an advanced pianist, in addition to saying that Jonny's videos that I've seen so far are awesome, someone needs to say that this guy has beautiful hands, fingernails, and rings. What a pleasure to watch and to listen to!
What I do for learning modes is to focus on C major and then simply put this: it is playing Cmajor scale but shifting the root. As an example, consider Dminor,it is the second chord of CMajor ... we start to play over Cmajor scale but shifting the root to D... this is called D Dorian but in fact it is simply C major starting from D. From there you apply this to every chord of the C Major and then you cross all the modes. It is simplistic but at the end... this is what it is. Of course... the art is to make good music with that and that is another piece! This course is amazing.
What I like in yur way of teaching is that the exercises are funny and sound good. This make your course funny while being very good. This way of teaching opens to different ways to learn scales and phrasing. You are very creative and give me ideas on how to practice them differently on a guitar too.
So excited to learn from your tutorials. Wish I had this kind of stuff when I was young. I can rock boogie blues but always wanted to learn jazz. Your videos are fantastic!
Is crazy how Johnny knows so much of piano. A genius with his new formulas exercises, tips, tricks, theory, etcc and the way he plays every genre, and he is still a young guy.
That’s because he has learned a lot AND plays a lot, you goof! 🎹😊♥️. Seriously though if you commit to practicing what he gives you, you will get better. And this coming from a “slow learner!” I am loving this lesson. Good luck to you.
@@shirleybarnes8852 same here, I can now play very long lines in one direction, meanering through differen scales. i.e major to diminished, and I am a mere beginner. it's very exciting.
Dear Jonny, thank you for your endless hours of work you put into your helpful videos. I went from not playing anything 4 weeks ago to writing my one song stealing those cords from fly me to the moon. Jonny your the Man. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Regards Marcus.
Did you know how he is playing the left hand chord,, when he is hitting the chord.is it in the scale starting or twice in the scale. If you understand please let me know.
This is the most comprehensive and detailed tutorial. Everyone leaves knowing exactly what they need to do and I can definitely see a path to better jazz playing
Searching for piano exercises to teach my students and stumbled upon your video. Such clear instruction and great techniques you’ve shared. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Oh, man, this is the most incredible way I have ever seen on youtube to learn scales and chords. The best thing is that it comes with fingerings...that's the GREATEST part of it. I'll definitely buy these lessons. Thanks.
Hi Johnny I am a starting beginner, I have browsed numerous sites on TH-cam about learning, and wasn't convinced because I know something is missing until I accidentally came across you lesson. This is what I'm looking for. Thank you. I'll start now.
You literally read my mind when you said that we should come up with our own fingering rather than be constrained by our classical fingering mechanics. Nice to hear it said aloud. 👌
As a late beginner/early intermediate player, I can't emphasize enough how great your videos are Jonny. Thank you so much for taking standard instruction and transforming it into useful real-life playing material. Invaluable lessons!!
Do Appreciate The Lessons and has helped me to play more horizontally. Just having a lot of trouble following your piano notes as there appear's to be a few mistakes or you're not adhering to the music displayed. BUT immensely helpful.
I'm only a guitarist but this is the first time I've come across a lesson as interesting as intelligent and especially perfectly done ... and the teacher is a pianist !...incredible but true !...and however, I followed the best guitarists trying to give some lessons : as well as Al di Meola, Allan Holdsworth, Gambale, Henderson, McLaughlin, Scofield as thousand others. Of course, they all are some excellent technicians but ALL are alas very bad teachers and horrible pedagogues ! .. Thank you a thousand times to you who have been such a great revelation for me... by giving clear explanations!... Applaud from France !...

I'm so confused why modes are harder than scales..... Especially since your not actually playing them across keys in the example .

Ah, so good to get a good blend of explanation and practical. This is so much better than "here are some triads, now learn them all"
