or what a beautiful melody well harmonized can be . Or pure sound and just the experience of NOISE and instrumental thinking and nohow can give one. Saint-Saens is a bit oldfashioned for me but there s much pleasure in his orchestration here ! I want to find his other operas the 5 piano concerti and cello concerto hae always been favorittes .I think violin concerto no.3 still gets played .Lord knows that shorter violin orchestra 2partpiece is programmed everywhere!So much of the great things music does even the noise of Boulez (my favorite!)Michael Hersch,

I always thought Maria Callas was wonderful perfofming this ,and she most definately is , but so also is Elina Garanca .We are so lucky to have access to this music .

Callas had longer subtler phrases and legatos. Cabalet is sensational but Callas is the best. The “physique du rôle” helps: she had it all

Vraiment cet air de Saint-Saens, compositeur dont curieusement aucun commentaire ne donne ici le nom, fait partie des plus beaux et merveilleux airs jamais écrits.
C'est vrai qu'Elina Garantcha lui a donné une nouvelle jeunesse , une popularité et une quasi perfection en le chantant souvent dans ses récitals (qu'on peut écouter en présence du public sur You tube).
Si, moi! Cette composition est sublime!
Je trouve d'ailleurs qu'on ne met pas assez en avant les compositeurs lors d'un concert.
A la fin on applaudit copieusement les musiciens et le chef d'orchestre mais
le compositeur qui a créé l’œuvre reste souvent dans l'ombre! Il suffirait, à mon avis, de faire apparaître en grand sur un écran le nom du compositeur au début et à la fin de la représentation afin qu'il puisse être vu et honoré comme il se doit par le chef d'orchestre et le public!

Absolutely beautiful voice. For this song, she is the only one could match or topple Maria Callas.
Put this recording on an oscilloscope. ( A machine which captures sound waves, analyzes them, and then represents all those sound waves on a screen - I will bet you'll be looking at a nearly incomprehensible symmetry of perfection.

I could see her in person at Osaka last month. Of course she sung this beautiful song. We found that she is a warm personality and really enjoyed 2.5 hours.
The first time I heard Elina sing this aria was when I clicked on her 2011 Vienna Opera Ball performance. She had me in tears at the end. And when I saw Anna Netrebko all choked up it brought home to me how special Elina is. I have listened to lots of Mezzos but for me Elina's voice stands above all others. She is an alien from another planet.

Utterly sublime words cannot express her wonderful beautiful voice and her beauty just absolutely magical .
In a class of her own. So many have recorded this aria and many with distinction. What makes this excel is the true mezzo voice and the beautiful singing. Marylin Horne's version was the standard for decades, but she growled the low notes; Elina sing them and never loses her beauty of tone. Magnificent.

Eric - I agree 100%! I have a CD with Horne performing this aria and I used to play that for friends. Now I'm sharing this link. So many mezzos like to show off a husky sound on the low notes, and there are times when that may be good, but Elina sings with such beautiful, unified sound, top to bottom. It is actually her softer sounds that won me over on this recording.

What a beautiful interpretation of this aria! Elīna Garanča is my favourite mezzosoprano. She has such a splendid voice and a certain colour of a lyrico-spinto soprano. I like her timbre and her high culture of singing very much.
