I'm not an expert like you Ben, but I'm older and wiser. For the REMAINDER of this build, it's important that you TAKE YOUR TIME. It's been a difficult, long and frustrating journey....the EASIEST thing to do once you've seen light at the end of the tunnel like you have is to hurry... one tends to speed up near the end....take it from an OG....don't do it, you've come to far bro. 😎

Sound deadening doesn't really matter (burns or overspray). Once you put in carpet and everything else, you're never going to see it. Don't sweat the small stuff. As long as it still functions its purpose that is all that matters. Good job! Keep it up!!!! So proud of you! You're a warrior and don't ever forget it!

*** Ben *** read the comments about the “pot metal”. This was used to make the corners and trim pieces during the 50-70s as a cheap way to finish details. That why there was a lot of filler used for repairs back then. Google repair and restoration for the best way to fix. Hope this helps, good to see you back at it.

I Know you won’t see this but instead of grinding the headlight bezels down you should take some MIG welding wire and use it as a filler on the hood to get it flush with the bezels.
It’s done that way a lot on vehicle body gaps also.

Headlight buckets are pot metal. It would have been wonderful if they had made them out of aluminium but they didn't. The rear quarter panel corner caps are also pot metal.
The factories were so far behind when they started building these cars that they just threw them together so the factory brand new gaps were crap. I have had to custom fit every piece of custom fit sheet metal I have put on my car and there have been many.
Actually I take that back. I got one piece out of 20 or so that fit perfectly without any modification. That was a new old stock core support so it wasn't aftermarket. It was amazing it fit so well. My aftermarket fiberglass hood is also a pretty good fit but I have had to grind on it.

May I suggest the implementation of a Shelby mustang valance for improved air flow?
Not to mention its aide in the Shelby look you are going for?
Shelby mustangs also used cougar tail lights ;)
I am loving the direction of the build.
Your fabrication skills are growing stronger learning from the past's failures!
You are well on your way to the level of master!
The hinge upgrade is epically awesome, DUDE!!!

    • @garypremo
      @garypremo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ben's Mustang is a 1965. 1965 and 1966 Shelby Mustangs kept the stock Mustang taillights. Those models were all about light weight and performance. The Cougar style taillights were first used on the 1967 Shelbys. In my opinion, Cougar style taillights on a 1965 Mustang would give the build an amateurish look.

Be careful those headlight caps aren't "pot metal", that was common for old cars back then, which it's basically the cheapest alloy they could make cast parts from. You *can* weld it, but hard to figure out mix of crap metals and in what proportion they actually put it in. It is essentially their leftover metals boiled down in a pot (pot metal!), so you never quite know what you get.

I wouldn't try and weld on those headlight bezels. They're probably made out of pot metal, not aluminum. Pot metal can be brazed, but a regular welder will turn it into slag as it has a low melting point.

It finally looks like a car again 👍 yes old car panel gaps are the worse 😂 My 80 Trans am it took forever to get the gaps perfect and it was a clean straight car but the fenders have shims and one side would be lined up and go back and the other was off same as the doors . The trunk was the easiest of them all but I've seen cars that we're low miles and original and my panels blew them away on the same models . Keep pushing on this build it going to be a one of a kind Mustang 😎

Man you're right. I've restored quite a few 60s and 70s musclecars and the gaps were sometimes terrible from the factory..I measured 3 different unrestored 67 Camaro convertibles when I built the last one, and the dimensions varied quite a bit from car to car. When you add in aftermarket panels it can be a freakin' nightmare!

Amazing build. I know you think hood pins are ugly but consider aero latches as a center hood clip might not have the appropriate clamping for to hold the hood down at high speeds. Please remember a ‘65 has a hugely different aero profile. Thus, without tunnel testing you can not assume it has the same forces of wind acting on the hood as a savage vehicle you salvage the latch from. Great build and keep it coming!
