Making Fiber Batts for Spinning with a Drum Carder

- In this video I show you how I use my drum carder to make a fiber blend batt (time stamp 0:45) and a batt from washed fleece (time stamp 13:38)
The carder is Clemes & Clemes Elite manual. I was able to get a nearly 90 gram batt on this terrific carder.

The smaller drum will accumulate less fiber if you don’t pull or restrain the fiber as you crank it through.
So far this is the most interesting, informative and educational of any of the drum carding videos! No coffee necessary because she is organized and thorough and makes it all about the carding process rather than...well...other unnecessary neurosis’! Yea! Great video! I’m a subscriber!

I love your videos. I just discovered you. Like someone said below, your focus on the process itself, along with your soothing voice, make watching your videos a pleasure. Also, I like the idea of keeping the Shetland colors separate to create a gradient series of batts. I think a sweater that would incorporate stripes of the different Shetland colors would be gorgeous!

Thank you so much for this video. I have some shetland I got from one of the WAFA artists that I've washed and was trying to figure out how I was going to process it. I will try it on my drum carder but I have tons of locks attached to the fleece so I'll have to separate them first. You gave me the courage to try this on my carder.
Hi Lisa -- Thanks for this helpful video. Just washed some Jacob fleeces with a friend. We will be carding it up in the next month. Your little tips will come in handy. I like the use of the packing brush for the big drum. That is a great tool and thing to do. Till next time.

I’m enjoying your youtube videos and want to check into your Rav group soon. I have this same carder on the electric base. Love it! I like seeing your technique. Hadnt seen anyone hold the fiber back with this carder, but i will try it now. Long fibers tend to want to roll up and onto my licker in usless i use a packer/burnishing brush
Alison Hlathein I do not hold the fiber back but rather just hold it flat and let the licker in take it without resistance.

Barbara Hudak I think 3 or 4 years but I don’t remember exactly. You can use hand cards to blend and make woolen prep and they are a lot cheaper than a drum carder.

You make it look so easy. I have made batts and I find the fiber doesn’t come off the carder in one piece like yours did

I have got my drum carder now. My first intent was a complete disgrace. I may have destroyed the wool as I see it, because it ended up with a turn or blob or )please excuse my English) I dón't know how to call it, a tiny ball at the beginning of the fibers (very expensive baby alpaca, BTW)
I see the fiber that you use to feed the carder is already smooth and fluffy, how do you accomplish that?

If you cut the batt off you are cutting the staple of the lock and it may lead to inconsistent spinning. That being said, I have seen it done.

I bought the grey Shetland from a seller on Ravelry and I love Elizabeth Hubbard’s Corriedale fleeces. She does not have an online shop, but you can contact her on Instagram. Fiber festivals are a good place to buy fleeces too whenever we can have those again. I am glad you found the video useful. Thanks for commenting!
Hello, I bought a picker and I’m wondering about sending your washed fleecy locks through the picker first then card it would be easier than flicking tips?
Oh yes! That would work perfectly. What type of picker did you get? It’ll make short work of the prep step for drum carding.

How do you avoid neeps when you load straight from the lock? 💐
Fine fleeces tends to form noils in my drum carder. If you crank really slowly it reduces but does not eliminate all together. I love a medium fleece for the drum carder for that reason.

I know I'm late to the party but I'm going through all of your videos from the beginning. What TPI is your carder? Mine is 90. I think I should've gotten a 72.

I didn’t test any out, but bought based in research.
Don’t you just love working with wool? Be it knitting or carding or spinning on a drop spindle or a wheel. I know I do.
But u use allreaddy kartet wool, whats the purpose of doeing it on a drumkarter,,
I will often use the carder for blending previously prepared wool and other fibers.

Hello and thank you for your question. You might have to order a drum carder for Europe, the US or New Zealand. A google search may be the way to go.

What did you spritz on the fiber,, water?
I just used a little water and a very fine mist just to cut down on static. You don’t want to add grease to your drum carder I think.
How much wool can be carded per hour with drum carding machine?
I approximate I can card 100 grams per hour. But I don’t really take good notes on my working speed. It is not a fast process. With an electric carder you could speed things up a bit I’m but it also depends on the size of your carder.
