    CR, As the owner of a 'CR Top Pick' car from way, way back in 2005, I find it reassuring that the brand I put my hard earned money into still reigns supreme. 🤩 Conversely, it is not reassuring at all to see certain brands on and off the list in alternate years. 🤨 Focusing on the sensible Corolla Hybrid sedan for a moment, I believe its place would be even more justified if Toyota offered us the full range of Corolla Hybrids including hatch and wagon. Sadly, it is worth noting that Toyota has greedily de-contented some Corolla sedans with a return to a retrograde torsion beam rear suspension. At a time in which Toyota Motor Corporation reported a quarterly profit of nearly $9 Billion, such miserly cost-cutting is worthy of public scorn. 🤬

      Corolla has always been a cheaper alternative to the Camry, so the cost-cutting only on the Corolla makes sense. Maybe they pass the saving to the buyers. If they cut cost on the Camry, then I would be with you 100%.

    The way CR judges reliably is a nuts. When they lack data (i.e., when a model is very new), they just proceed with an assumption that reliability is excellent. On the other hand, models that have proven reliability over time don’t rate highly. For example, the Toyota 4Runner, which is probably the most reliable SUV ever made, only scores “above average” for reliability. Makes no sense.

    I recently bought a Bolt EUV and so I might be biased, but I think the Bolt is a better choice than a Leaf. Both have pokey "fast" charging, but the Bolt's use of CCS helps future proof it compared to the dying chademo standard.

    Great show, great episode.
    I must admit that there were a number of times I skipped back to hear what Jen had said. This caused me to notice that she can sometimes trail off in volume as well as increase speed which made it harder for me to hear what was said.
    I like the details about how data is collected and used to generate the ratings which the question pointed to. I would enjoy just a little bit more drilling down on that, which may get lost in the interest of expediency and preserving the conversational style format.
    As with so many things, I'm sure no role in putting together an episode like this is easy and I'm not aware of any content comparable in independence and quality, yet just wanted to put my observations out there.
    I can think of few things more important to support than an independent consumer oriented organization so I completely enjoy being a paid subscriber and watching this show. Thank you to all involved.
    P.S. If anyone is aware of comparable content... let me know.

    2005 Outback owner here with a little pet peeve when talking about how much bigger new models are than their older counter parts. I know I'm venturing into "old man screams at clouds" territory, but I'm really hoping someone at CR actually reads this comment and addresses this the next time they talk generally about auto sizes. Namely, while the 2023 Forester is significantly bigger than its 2009 relative (3 inches longer, 2 inches wider, 2 inches higher roofline) it actually has LESS cargo capacity behind the 2nd row of seats by a fairly significant margin. The older "smaller" Forester has 33.5 cu ft of cargo room, while the bigger 2023 has only 28.9 cu ft. This is a trend I've observed in many new vehicles. They somehow manage to grow significantly larger on the outside without giving us a commiserate amount of interior space in the cargo compartments.

      @LP-sp4sf ปีที่แล้ว

    There is more to comparing the costs of a gas-powered car versus and EV than just the price per mile. EVs tend to have lower maintenance costs with no oil changes nor emissions problems, but they can have faster tire and possibly brake replacement depending on how fast they are and whether the driver has a lead foot. I live in a place with high electricity costs (and high gas costs) but with 300 days of sunlight per year. I am home a lot during daylight hours. If I were going to stay in this country, I would first invest in solar panels and then buy an EV.

    Not to be too negative, but, as Jake points out the Tesla Supercharger network is first class and makes a trip to Vermont or JFK a non-issue. Yes, you can leave a Tesla at JFK for a couple of weeks, parked, if, you turn off sentry mode and cabin overheat protection, which are features that don't exist on most other cars. The Tesla phone app gives a full breakdown of where the car was charged over the last 30 days, and how much that charging cost, so eliminates the guesswork on what you are spending on electricity to charge your Tesla. Final thought, good to see more hybrids and EV's in the top picks. In my opinion, we should be subtracting points for cars that get 20 city and 26 highway, like the Kia Telluride. I believe CR has a policy of moving toward a greener future, rewarding vehicles that get bad fuel economy seems like a mistake.

    What about the cost of adding electric charging capability to homes? Not cheap.

    • @wattsnottherms
      @wattsnottherms ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends wildly on the home. It could be around $500 or north of $2000. Most are probably around $1000. Some utilities, cities, and states offer rebates to bring down the cost. (Also, many folks might be able to get by using a regular wall outlet. That adds about 3 mi/hr, so if you can park for 12 hours and drive less than 36 miles on a typical day, you don’t *need* 240V charging at home.)

      I vaguely recall you might be able to a tax deduction for the install or product?

    • @doug2216
      @doug2216 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lots variability there. If you have a garage and you have 200 amp service panel in there then it's pretty cheap, maybe less than $300 for NEMA 14-50R outlet install by a qualified electrician. Plus $400 for a 40a plug in Emporia Level 2 charger off Amazon. If you have 70 amp service, need a panel upgrade, and need an outdoor outlet with a long run installed you could be looking at thousands and thousands of dollars maybe even ten thousand. My electric co-op will give $1000 credit for a charger install and I think some EV's will help with install at purchase ie Chevy Bolt. If you have a single family home built in the last 50 years with non sketcky electrical its doable. Or if you can charge at work with level 2 and top off at home with 120v.

      I have one. It's an appliance and blends in with all the other utes on the road. Nothing to write home about. Pretty much the Rav4 from years past but at least I could get it for sub $25k MSRP with AWD. The drivetrain is pretty terrible but running cost and MPG are good. Almost seems like the the old school Toyota they were afraid to make. I still have a 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser and a KLR-650 for my true off road adventures.
