I loved seeing the bow wow sticker in ziggy’s window! I worked for bow wow Seattle for 14 years and must have handed out thousands of those stickers! I still have and drive several bugs and buses. VW’s for life!
the paint should be fine without a sealer. the whole bus below the belt line has dents, cracks from previous repairs etc. as we said, it's a three day garage paint job. You have to draw the line at some point before going down the rabbit hole of paint and body. this bus goes off road and goes through brush and is going to be scratched, so the idea here was just to get it all one color ( the original color). hope that answers your question, i don't think it's a waste of paint.
VW Life, sealer protects the metal from rust & gives color uniformity. It also helps with adhesion. Sealer is much cheaper than color. You wouldn’t have to use as much Color(Single Stage).
@@_f30_b58 totally agree with you. Even if you guys had spot primed it with canned primer (especially the bare metal) it would have sealed it of far better and used less product in the long run.
I didn't in any way mean to imply your project is a "waste of paint", my meaning is that it takes far more material to attain consistent color when you are spraying over a non chromatic base than what you would use if shooting over a sealer or prime coat. But then again you will have a partial can of your color coat left over which will probably never get used. Got a few of those I'll tell you.
Oh okay yes I get it now. Yeah and there's also the trade-off of having to paint the primer on and then paint the color. In this case yes it took a few extra coats because we didn't have the sealer as you suggested. But it was a little easier just laying the paint on thick in this case rather than do a sealer primer first. But yes it was at the sacrifice of extra paint
no , as we said in the video, it's just a garage special. we take these into the desert and it doesn't need to be show quality. lots of body work would be required to make it all nice looking.
The best clear coat that you can get is the "OH MY" 2k clear from BuyCustomPaint.com. A HS clear that's really easy to spray with a high gloss, and doesnt require cutting or buffing and the small kits start at $30..... Definitely worth checking out...good video
we mentioned why in the video, this bus is no show car and it goes off road. there was primer on the nose and left side and we sanded the existing paint.

Thank you so very much for sharing! Awesome 👍😍
Thanks for watching!
Cool man! So glad Ziggy is getting painted!
me too!!!
Always use a sealer/primer. When you get it in the sun, you'll see the dark spots. Cheers!
thanks
I am assuming that paint is some kind of self etching paint that can be sprayed directly on metal?
no it's just single stage
Just out of curiosity why would you not spray at least a sealer before you shoot the color coat? Waste of some expensive product IMHO.
