2 years ago I found your channel and watched all your Hasta Alaska video. Since then I built my own van for traveling. I am watching your videos again and it brings back memories to when I was just imagining this life. I do van life now but are on a halt because of this pandemic. I just want to say thanks and I still think you're the OG of van life. Thank you
You guys rule. You spent more time fixing your sweet van than most people travel in years. When people sigh and say, "I wish I could travel like you!" I'm gonna send them this video and be like, "There's a lot you don't see. These guys are badasses." Keep trekking.
My Vanagon broke down for the 4th time while on a summer trip 1000 miles from home. As I bitched and moaned about having to replace another coolant hose buried deep in the engine my wife saw a bumper sticker on the truck parked across from us, "The difference between an ordeal and an adventure: Attitude." I have enjoyed your "attitude" as you work through the problems with your VW. Great job!! In spite of it all, you have kept it an adventure.
Dude I feel your pain. I had an old Jeep I've taken across the US and down into Baja on a few occasions and as is par with road trips, Mr Murphy tagged along for the ride and that bastard never chipped in. Brake fluid, hoses, antifreeze, you name it. Shot a spark plug right out of the engine block, and of course we'd just burned a fat one of Cali's finest and it sounded like a gunshot under the hood. God bless you 2 for your patience and perseverance. Well done
That was so worth waiting for, relief that you haven't just given up and gone home, relief that the kombi is fixed until the next time, joy to know there will be other adventures to share. Well done you two, those were some difficult times you've been through and you're still smiling and shall I say it, still together.
Better than "TV" This is your story, your content. The Internet is the great equalizer, world wide exposure with a global fan base. Your perseverance is amazing. Awesome!
I've been a kinda depressed person lately and I've always been a big fan of the VW buses so I really enjoy watching this and it makes me kinda happy to see what is to come for me like will I have one or not and as soon as I heard old pine start playing it instantly brightened my day thinking about my uncle and playing the song on guitar with him and his love for the buses to grow on me and recently finding one for sale while listening to the same song
I had a 1971 VW camper for 10 years , My engine in and out must of been over a dozen, and 2 complete new blocks. but we traveled all over the western US in the mountains. Great Video and just wonderful to follow you. Stay safe and keep up the smiles.
Learning more life lessons and skills in such a short time than most people get in a life time. I absolutely love your little talks on patience and taking it all in stride.
Have no words to express my admiration to you two. Specially that girl. a multi tasker, strong, positive and happy "cherry pie"...She is a girl to keep for ever....And you boy, Amazing team. keep it up and never split...
Love the videos! Like others, I stumbled upon them by accident and just had to keep watching another and another. Hours later, I'm still watching another. Very good job with everything...especially the editing.
I've been looking forward to this, great video and epic adventure ! My only disappointment was that you didn't ditch the VeeDub in favour of something much more reliable. On the other hand, I have travelled throughout Europe with an old 1960's British vehicle for many years and it's during the hard times that you find out who you really are. That's when you find great people that become friends for life and those are the times you never forget. Without hardships, life is much easier but never quite as interesting. Good on ya !
Unreal!! I just stayed up all night watching . Man you got serious brass balls . both of you ! truly inspirational and a great story ! I thought I would watch all the way to Alaska , then realized , you are still on the trip. I hope you get through Mexico Ok , its a scary , scary place right now. Wish I lived on the west coast to see you all come through , maybe Alaska , I think Im going next year to stay. Good luck and cant wait for next vid!
Now I can see why it was so long between videos. I can certainly relate. I pulled my engine too for replacement and that quickly turned into a full resto. Mind you, I am not having to live in it whilst it happens. Awesome effort to you both. Very enjoyable journey to watch.
hi ben ,the rock aint changed ,I'm 47 now,but backpacked around south east asia and oz for 2 yrs same as your self at 29yrs old ,and returned to the rock ,once you travel hard to stop youl find ,look forward to your next vids ,you must have surfed at the splash ,its still a hotspot for all , jersey is now starting summer, weather SOUNDO ,take care pal .
I hope the best for you all, thanks for the entertainment and being able to couch adventure a bit with you! Your going to make it, only wish I was on the west coast to see that baby cruise on by. God Speed!
You CAN find new engines for VWs in Mexico. Just a month ago I saw a brand new 1600 at a VW parts store still wrapped in cardboard and plastic. Might be new old stock but it shows that they are indeed still out there. I really dont mean to offend you but you gotta stop going to the mecanics in the first town you get too. As you've probably discovered those mecanic guys do it because they need to feed a family not because theyre passionate about cars or cross continental road trips. They're not there, equiped, or trained for that kind of thing Keep in mind there are huge class gaps in Mexico. You need to distinguish the kinds of businesses out there and how they match the class gap. Some are aimed at passionate car people, they do highly standarized work very professionally. Those will do high class restorations and major mechanical overhauls to spec for the latin americans who can afford such a thing. The next category is the middle point. They do professional work to all makes and models. They're for the average car and dont really specialize in something as peculiar as very worn down VW vans. The last category is the one where I always see you, the mecanic for the lower class. This is for the lower class Joe who doesnt care if his car will from now on have to be kick started like a motorcycle. What he's looking for is whatever can be done for cheap so he can get to work the next day. Hit it with a hammer, duct tape it, patch it with cardboard, whatever it takes to help put food on the tabe and take grandpa to the doctor. That's the crowd these kinds of mecanics are for. Your needs are totally out of the ordinary for them. When you look at it that way you can totally get why they think youre weird. I understand you where under time constraits but If I was you I would have saved my money and gotten to a major place like Mexico City, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Puebla etc and checked there for either a new engine or a proper rehaul shop instead of gambling my money on yet another dirt floor and brick wall special. At the same time I admire your persistance and the fact that youve visibly become a lot stronger and resourceful. I know at times you probably cursed out your hosts for being unreliable but perhaps now you understand the hustle they're in. You're even becoming somewhat like them. Not afraid to mess with broken electric wires with your bare hands, not afraid to sharpen a machete on an angle grinder, not afraid to jump over brick walls, showering wit buckets of water. All of that, you are now stronger for being able to do those things. If anything that hardyness and inginuity is one of the biggest gifts your host countries have given you. I'm really glad to see you coping so well. I wish you guys all the best of luck and you have all my support!
I totally get your advice. And I was thinking why not just get to Mexico City or a a major place--even if you just take a bus to secure your part. I guess they were attached to the idea that the journey needs to say continuous on the Kombi. Then, too, there Spanish is really quite elementary...so it might have been hard for them to pull this off.
i have become totally hooked on your show guys. its truely brilliant to watch lovely people having an amazing time and learning soo much looks massively fun cant wait to go and explore mexico wishing you all the best of luck with the rest of the journey
Yep, sure sucks that you all had such mechanical issues. I've lost count at how many times you've pulled and rebuilt the engine. I've basically spent the entire day watching your road trip and I'm so jealous...wish I could have done that. Great videos...thanks for the shares.
My heart sank when I saw the wrist pin clips in your hand... I'm sure one was on one side and the second was on the other... It's awesome to have a front row seat for your adventure. Can't wait to see you finally get to have some unadulterated fun.
yep it was one on each side - and when I got it back together on one side I realized I'd forgotten the silicone, then when doing the other side I realized I had forgotten the locktite - I really wasn't well that day and made so many mistakes!
I just discovered your channel. I love it. I will be going from San Francisco to Patagonia on a bicycle by myself and Love your adventure. Thank you for filming.
Such a cool video ... The younger generation of van life travelers might not be able to handle all the crap you have gone through to keep going. You definitely have my respect! I love watching your videos ...
The patience you exhibit is awesome. I would of gone a little LOCO in half the time you have spent in so called garages with so called mechanics. How frustrating. Sharne you are the bomb. What girl would put up with such accommodations and lack of showers and flush toilets. You are the best.

"I'm so over this" :o) I could relate, after owning air cooled volks for years. these videos are really fun to watch though...thanks for documenting your trip...
Just recently found out about your adventure, almost nonstop watched the episodes :D Thanks for sharing, stay awesome and never let Sharne go, she's definately a keeper! BTW, You kinda look like Klaas-Heufer-Umlauf,a german entertainer :D
Awesome, best wishes to you guys. It's gotta be a lot of ups and downs but I hope the good far out weighs the bad. My son and I are going on an adventure soon, I've been working on my van and getting things ready slowly and more or less "training" him for the trip. I hope it will be more educating then sitting in a classroom everyday repeating the same routine day in and out.
Wow....Yeah I had a machine shop do me that way too. I poured some gas in the intake and it leaked...he said loosen the valves and it will ''hammer''it self good!lol. Yes, I see...what a great girl you have...hand lapping the valves...wow!
Hope life is well ..I must say I love the music choice and the laid back view ..if you ever get to Portland Oregon hit me up for a good dinner and a beer ..Sincerely Stevo
Wow!..Just loved this video!..I wish I'd been there to help you guys with the mechanicals not that I'm a mechanic by trade but I'm pretty nifty with a spanner and electrics!!...F^#k, fancy leaving those circlips out!!...What a bummer!!..I'm gonna get my other half to watch this video since she once wanted us to travel around Australia!!...She'd have had kittens if she'd gone through the shit that you guys went through!
Hi ben ,enjoying your trip a lot ,i asked earlier if you were from jersey as i read further i see you are ,,its 9am and i just finished watching the last of your vids ,I'm just about to go to fort regent to exercise and all the bank masses are walking down pier road to work ,you aint missing much ,travel on pal .
So wonderful to see y'all still together and living the dream. I thought you given up. I wish I could send money. I would send my 21yo step-daughter you could swap her for parts but I don't think you would get much. Keep the dream alive. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to Ep.16
congrats for getting thru the engine overhaul. if u had to do it again, maybe try getting a hand from an off duty vw mechanic from the tapachula vw dealership! it might've taken less than one month!
Did you put a VW bug motor in your bus? I had a bus with a bug motor once and it ended in a cry. They just don't have the same torque as a bus engine. I have done the VW life for over 15 years. ...Best of times and the worst... I have a Jeep now.... Never going back to VW again but I love to watch! :) Your video made me relive all those moments of pain! "Oh no...what's that noise?" I feel your pain and yet I am having fun watching! :+)
Thanks , for your reply did you go through Brooking, Oregon it is a nice fishing town ,hope you two get there safe with your V.W. Bug a Rama is in sept. At sacamento raceway you d fit in well
I hope these guys go through my place in North America. It would be awesome to meet them! Too bad I live in the plains (plains for how boring it is here).
Omg . This is enough to call it quits. Over 6 months to fix!!! How you pulled it together is just brilliant! !
2 years ago I found your channel and watched all your Hasta Alaska video. Since then I built my own van for traveling. I am watching your videos again and it brings back memories to when I was just imagining this life. I do van life now but are on a halt because of this pandemic. I stumbled on your channel researching a possible trip to Cuba. Three hours later I still haven't slept and in a trance watching you guys!
+anyalake ha ha sorry about that :) Cuba is awesome though, be sure to go!
Did you go on your trip
You guys rule. You spent more time fixing your sweet van than most people travel in years. When people sigh and say, "I wish I could travel like you!" I'm gonna send them this video and be like, "There's a lot you don't see. These guys are badasses." Keep trekking.

Viva Westfalia Thanks #VWLOVE
As frustrating as things can get.... What a life experience!! I'm jealous!
Tacha don't be Jealous - come and join us

At the end of it all..ya got a cool dog...met some awesome people...alot of memories...and your now a Volkswagen engine repair master.
Learning more life lessons and skills in such a short time than most people get in a life time. I absolutely love your little talks on patience and taking it all in stride.
As a mechanic myself I can totally appreciate this misery you guys went through. Watching this I so wished I could have been there to help.
This has been one the most heart touching videos on the series so far. Great job guys
Have no words to express my admiration to you two. Specially that girl. a multi tasker, strong, positive and happy "cherry pie"...She is a girl to keep for ever....And you boy, Amazing team. keep it up and never split...
You are pure, uncut awesome-ness! Thank you for sharing!

I’m just realizing how good your channel was. It’s time to return and visit all the places you spent time.
My god, man, this was epic!
Also, amazing video capture and editing.
Thanks for all the hard work that went into this.
Good Vibrations!
+Allen Hare glad you enjoyed it Allen. Got a favorite Hasta Alaska episode yet?
Love the videos! Like others, I stumbled upon them by accident and just had to keep watching another and another. Hours later, I'm still watching another. Very good job with everything...especially the editing.

Now I can see why it was so long between videos.
I can certainly relate. I pulled my engine too for replacement and that quickly turned into a full resto. Mind you, I am not having to live in it whilst it happens. Awesome effort to you both. Very enjoyable journey to watch.
Inspiring video, a real demonstration of patience and tolerance of another cultures traits

They're not all rebuilt. I've seen several new old stock around Mexico in VW shops from the puebla plant. Good stuff.
At least 19 people read and liked though . . . so, it's only wasted on you, apparently.
I totally get your advice. And I was thinking why not just get to Mexico City or a a major place--even if you just take a bus to secure your part. the best part for me are the insights you share at the end. Well said, and well done.
glad you caught those!
i have become totally hooked on your show guys. its truely brilliant to watch lovely people having an amazing time and learning soo much looks massively fun cant wait to go and explore mexico wishing you all the best of luck with the rest of the journey

This is easily the best video I've ever seen on youtube. Found it from Matt Farah's Smoking Tire vid. You're the man!
DVJ38er This is easily the best comment we've received. Thanks :D
DVJ38er Same here, got word of the channel from the Smoking Tire vid. Absolutely EXCELLENT series, it makes me want to travel so badly!
just wonderful guys, thanks for sharing and inspiring us all
My heart sank when I saw the wrist pin clips in your hand... I'm sure one was on one side and the second was on the other... It's awesome to have a front row seat for your adventure. Can't wait to see you finally get to have some unadulterated fun.

Hello from Haines, Alaska. My family enjoys watching your adventure. I will have the shop waiting for you when you get here.
Can't wait to get there - maybe 15 more months :)
You have my respect and my interest as well.
I just discovered your channel. I love it. I will be going from San Francisco to Patagonia on a bicycle by myself and Love your adventure. Thank you for filming.
OMG I can't believe what they go through. Their determination is amazing.
I've got a 1977 VW that needs a new engine. I get a bit frustrated at times. But your videos are a real lesson and reminder on patience.
You are the best
Such a cool video ... The younger generation of van life travelers might not be able to handle all the crap you have gone through to keep going. You definitely have my respect! I love watching your videos ...
These are some of the best videos on TH-cam! What a great story of a couple learning how to be VW mechanics. 🤪😁
Its been hours and i still cant stop watching i feel so silly i just discovered Kombi Life today.

Woooow, the last part, almost make me cry!
The patience you exhibit is awesome. I would of gone a little LOCO in half the time you have spent in so called garages with so called mechanics. How frustrating. Sharne you are the bomb. What girl would put up with such accommodations and lack of showers and flush toilets. You are the best.
You guys are awesome! pls. more. I'm ready for vacation. All the best from Stefan from Germany
I just found your videos watched two of em I will be tuning in. I really enjoyed this video and could relate by doing ur own work on your vehicle. lovely video with a good underlying message you guys are a Stella Act.
thanks
Having had a Beetle in the 70s, and had the engine out as many time as you... I know they do not take kindly to wild temperature variation. Therefore, getting rid of the excess weight and the roof box is an excellent idea.
Also, I cannot imagine you two, plus Alaska ever being apart after this journey.... just saying !!
Ben Howard - Old Pine. Great tune. love your show Kombi Life. Be awesome to travel those roads. hope to see more episodes.

So wonderful to see y'all still together and living the dream. I thought you given up. I wish I could send money. I would send my 21yo step-daughter you could swap her for parts but I don't think you would get much. Keep the dream alive. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to Ep.16
another great video thank you for sharing with us best wishes and safe travels ..FINS UP..
Great episode!
This one made me cry!!
congrats for getting thru the engine overhaul. if u had to do it again, maybe try getting a hand from an off duty vw mechanic from the tapachula vw dealership! it might've taken less than one month!
been waiting for this!
You guys are amazing
Did you put a VW bug motor in your bus? I had a bus with a bug motor once and it ended in a cry. They just don't have the same torque as a bus engine.
I have done the VW life for over 15 years. ...Best of times and the worst... I have a Jeep now.... Never going back to VW again but I love to watch! :)
Your video made me relive all those moments of pain! "Oh no...what's that noise?"
I feel your pain and yet I am having fun watching! :+)

I hope these guys go through my place in North America. It would be awesome to meet them! Too bad I live in the plains (plains for how boring it is here).
