The Land rover was a monster, but props still have to go to the driver. The lines he took, the speed he was doing, the pressure he was running - all were pretty much spot on. Give that guy the keys to most of the other cars, and he would have made them look better. Maybe not as good as the Rover - but still better!
A really interesting video, with some great driving and guiding. Having done a lot of this type of off roading it is unusual to have such a selection of vehicles with good drivers. Obviously, some of the vehicles were far more limited in their abilities due to poor approach and departure angles. The Toyota in particular had some painful sounding knocks as did the one Jeep. The Land Rover and Smaller Jeep were much better in this regard, and although the Jeep had a better ramp breakover angle because of its shorter wheelbase, the Landy still performed as well because of the great axle articulation, traction, very good low down torque and great driver technique. The driver of the Landy in particular approached each obstacle in the right way, steady, let the vehicle meet the obstacle at the right position, where all wheels can get some traction, then gently mount the obstacle with no unnecessary wheel spin, or catching diffs. Most of the obstacles were cleared by the Landy at not much more than tickover where a high degree of torque is available in a Diesel engine, (revs do not generally help over large rocks that could damage components very easily). Overall, some great REAL driving over real challenges, showing the capabilities of all the vehicles if driven correctly, but clearly the smaller Jeep and Landy were the better vehicles for this type of off roading.
Late comment, it all in the line you take to get up the obstacle and also knowing how much power to use with the vehicle you are driving. That only comes with practice. If you aren't in it you can't win it.😊
The LR was a brute! -- torque power and traction w/decent clearance! The white jeep had the least clearance, power, torque but seemed to pick great lines and was slow and precise! I'm going LR#1 White Wrangler #2. ;)
For people saying DEFENDER ... it's not, I had the same rig - it's a V8 County Land Rover built circa 1985, this model preceded the Defender - fantastic truck and built tougher spec than Defenders actually.
Defender has become a generic name that many use for the 110 County and I've even heard Stage 1s being called Defender as well, eventhough it was on leafs.
@@lror - Zig Zag was my local, 5 mins from my door - Powerline, Ruined Castle etc - I owned a Dual Cab, Tray Back, Green 110 County - there are still a few pics on forums of it from trips in that area. I still think old LR's rule ... Cheers!
Martin William - Correct, I have not owned a defender, I owned a Range Rover just under 2 years, 47k miles, 23 mechanical problems, 3 tows, 2 transmission replacements, one transmission repair, and a host of other minor issues, a-frame mount failed, alternator, 2 water pumps, misc. power window issues, power seat issues, and a weird starter malfunction that required a tow but they wouldn’t replace it because it worked for them. It got to the absurd stage when I realized the transmission was going to either fail again and might not be cover by warranty because I had towed with it. Seriously! Got to the point that I was scared to drive it to the store. You can go sell crazy EMS were, that was THE most mechanically unsound vehicle I’ve ever had the displeasure of owning. Looked oh so pretty though! Rode nice too. Just wasn’t meant to be used.

This is another prime example of why i reckon auto is the way to go, the only reason the patrol was struggling was because of his manual transmission. Just watch and listen to the other vehicles, most of them are auto's and *most* of them make it look easy whilst crawling smoothly over this stuff. Awesome 4x4 vid, makes me want to get out there!

The difference is the white Jeep and the rover had lockers and the correct weight distribution..the black jeep looks cool but lock that front diff for God sake!

Pretty cool to see trucks in action that we can not buy here in CANADA. Most jeeps are driven by Moms here. To be honest the whole 4x4 off rd thing has sadly declined. I wish guys would start wheeling hard again because we use to have so much fun.
What are talking about??? In Nova Scotia there are jeep runs as well as the "thunder in the valley" series. In N.B. There are literally runs every single weekend except in winter. Don't know where in Canada you are, but you got to move! Lol! You must be in a city! I won't even mention the dozens of side by sides and 4 wheelers that go by my place on the power line all-year-round! NO SHORTAGE OF OFF ROADING IN CANADA!!

Wheel articulation, ground clearance, shock absorbers and suspension in the teal Land Rover was far better than what was in the other vehicles.
