Earlier this week, Korean pop idol Sulli from the Korean idol group f(x), was found dead in her home. We hit the streets of Seoul to ask ordinary Koreans about their views on her death and their thoughts on the topic of this tragedy and mental health.
Mental health and online harassment are serious issues, and nobody should have to live in fear of getting help. If you or anyone you know are even in the slightest way contemplating suicide, we encourage you to seek help ► en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

As someone who is clinically diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, I often hear people call suicide a choice. Let me be clear: when you are suicidal, it does not feel like a choice. I once heard someone compare the feeling to standing in a window of a burning building, and someone on the ground who cannot feel the fire says, “Don’t jump! You have so much to live for!” When someone who is depressed chooses suicide, it is not really a “choice.” It is effectively a surrender. You are finally surrendering the fight. You have to have been in immense, lasting pain for a prolonged period of time, to the point that your own brain literally cannot think of a single good reason why you should be alive.
The human will to live is INCREDIBLY powerful. When you are on the edge, your survival instinct will keep pushing you forward for months, years, sometimes even decades, it is so hard to finally give up. When I was at the bottom, thinking about suicide often felt like a comfort. “No matter how bad things get, I can always kill myself.” Even then, I clawed my way back. People need to understand: suicide isn’t a choice. It’s the terrible loss of an incredibly difficult war against your own brain.

Sen I can’t say for sure, I’m not a mental health professional, but it certainly isn’t a healthy way of thinking. Clinical depression stems from a chemical imbalance in the brain; if you do have it, there is help. It isn’t quick or easy to do, but if you’re willing to fight, you can win. Depression might feel like forever sometimes (your brain often tries to trick you into giving up by telling you that it is), but it doesn’t have to be. If you can’t seek out help where you are now, there are free 24/7 international services that can bridge the gap, especially in the lowest points, and there are online support networks, too. Google is your friend.

schattendiebin I’ve noticed that the people who say this crap fall into one of these two categories: they have NEVER experienced/at least know someone personally who struggles with mental health or they don’t educate themselves on the matter and view this from the victim’s perspective.
For myself, I don’t deal with depression. However, I have GAD and have had suicidal thoughts TWO times in my entire life. Anxiety falls into a similar category with depression. One doesn’t have the will power to keep this under control and it’s not like we want it to happen. My anxiety comes and goes, sometimes at pure random when I least expect it.
People, especially in Korea, really need to stop treating mental health like a taboo and start educating themselves. It’s not a joke. It’s much more complicated than they think.

This was exactly what I thought. Even the ones who claim to have mild depression seem to not understand how Depression afflicts you. I feel like they describe normal bouts of sadness. Not depression. That is a whole other level which they seem to not understand. Buuuut it might be due to the camera that they downplay it as not to be stigmatized. Or something getting lost in translation.

    He asked me;
"What would you do if one day you find yourself near someone who's about to commit suicide ?"
    After I stood there for a while I answered;
"I would try everything I can to save him"
"But how"? he asked me again.
"Giving him stronger reasons why he/she should live" I said.
He saw me for a while and said, "You have seen a lot of movies. You think he is acting impulsively and he/she doesn't have trying to find at least one reason to stop doing that . When someone decides to end up his life, this is due to a deep depression that has left him with no reason to live.
Saving a life is a lot more harder than you can imagine . "
I stood speechless in front of him and after a while I told him "you're right, but that shouldn't stop us from trying to do our best to save them, if we fail to remove the suffering that they have , then we can be part by sharing them with us and relieve the weight that they carry with so much pain , and when they show us one reason not to live, we have to give them ten stronger and beautiful reasons to live and not just to survive".

The thing about depression is, it convinces you that no one loves you that much and you’re just a useless person on earth, and your death would be better for everyone. That your death would bring more happiness for people and that you’re not worthy to be alive. I’m not clinically diagnosed to have depression but I’m pretty sure I have, and I’ve noticed that my whole family probably has depression. I used to be Depressed, and well I still am. Although after studying Astronomy I've come to respect all life even the ugly aspects of life. When you come down to it, life is a Cosmic miracle that has taken about 13billion years for you to be here at this moment, cherish it. Imagine the position of where we are in our Solar System too close we'd be too hot, to far we'd be to cold to have life. Our Sun gives life on Earth but at the same time kills life because of radiation, but our magnetosphere from our Iron core protects us from Ultra Violet rays that would otherwise kill all life on Earth. When you think about every single process going on at every moment in the day, it's a miracle of Cosmic proportions that we're alive to experience a fraction of time in the ever expanding Universe. I think sometimes we get caught up in our own Selfish World's in our mind that we forget the Natural beauty of the process of Life. I even think about the future of when we're all gone, since our Sun will die eventually in 5 billion years from now, our Solar System will die as our Sun will become a white dwarf and even though our physical bodies will be gone by then, the elements that we are composed of will remain and return back to the Stars from which we were made. So our lives will transcend into a new form of life in the Universe, so in a way no one really ever dies, our bodies die but the essence of what we are can't be destroyed because we're energy.

I just want to say something. A lot of people can't relate with people with mental health issues, but I just want you to consider what I have to say. I think what most people don't understand is that, most of the time, when people compliment us, it doesn't feel real or it doesn't make a difference in our confidence. But when someone makes a simple insult, intended to break us down or even if it comes of as an insult, it can destroy the little confidence we have. I always felt guilty having to tell people that I go to therapy. Common thoughts go through our heads. "Why can't I be normal?", "Normal people are happy", "I can't do this anymore", etc. What people fail to realize is, as strong as someone can seem, we can only take so much. Everyone can only take so much. It can go on for years, and years, and YEARS until every little reason we thought was good enough to consider living can seem like nothing. I remember just curling up on the floor, sobbing because I didn't have any reasons left. Take a moment to think about how Sulli felt. People need to take a moment to realize how close hating someone is to murder. You can hate someone, but PLEASE do NOT show it. The words that leave some peoples mouthes can cut deeper than a knife. As for the bystanders of people suffering from mental health issues, please don't call it a "victim mentality". Trust me, if I could've given my depression and anxiety away, I would in a heartbeat. The best thing you can do, is give them space when they need it and attention when you can. Show them that you care and give them love. What part about that can some people just not understand? As much as I love Korean culture, Korea itself is practically a slaughter house the size of a country. The pressure is INSANE. So please, if you see someone suffering or are suffering yourself, there are people there for you. I miss Sulli so much and I believe that every life matters. So haters, please consider the fact that this, to me at least, is a crime.

I will tell you a secret. NO ONE IS NORMAL. Simply put, most are better at hiding it.
Remember these words: People are mirrors. When someone mistreats you and acts badly when you dont give them a reason to, it is a reflection of their own pain. Every single human being on the planet is going though some level of PAIN. Reaction against action. Is your choice. To think that something is wrong with you and need be fixed OR something is wrong with them and needs to be fixed. You have the power. There are two kinds of forgiveness. The first one is when you forgive and you give a second chance. The other one is when you forgive but you choose to go on without them.

I don't even know how I got myself out of it but I'm glad I managed to escape that horrible time of my life. At last all i did is hug her and let her cry on my shoulder without saying a words. And i realized, with our presence alone can be comforting and it give big different than alone. If you know someone who depressed and don't know how to comfort them, just being with them and let them know you will always by their side will be a big help in their life.

This is an interesting video. Especially at the end, where the advice -esque segment was. No one really mentioned actual therapy or professional help. It might show the lack of knowledge or clinical depression or mental health problems aren't just about "thinking happy thoughts". I think mental health should be talked about more openly in our society. Although it is happening slowly, in many Asian countries mental health is still very much stigmatized sadly. Thanks for the video, it really does put things into perspective.

11:50 “I think expressing your own uniqueness and personality is a way to combat depression.” It’s so sad that Sulli did exact that - embracing herself, in the later years of her life, which only brought her even more hate and harassment because all those antis and bullies kept trying to silence her and bury her true self.
And now they have won, and will probably just move onto the next prey.

It's not really the Korean culture that attacked her for so long. A lot of older Koreans don't even have social media account. A lot of younger Koreans are more open-minded and didn't bully her.
The antis are a small percentage of despicable individuals/groups who persisted in their aggression and hatred towards her for a long time.
The world is not dark, but the dark forces in this world are very powerful. I think there's no need for you to be overly angry or pessimistic. In the end, culture/ideology doesn't kill people. PEOPLE kill people.
And btw, people help each other too. I still applause Sulli for being true to herself. I just wish she and her family had gotten her more professional help, and had taken medicines. She said in an interview that she never took medication for depression, and I think that was not the right choice at all.
(Fortunately Taeyeon said that she has been actively seeing doctors and taking medication for her own depression. She just ends up listening to them because most people just need someone to listen to them in this age. It's sad that the most technological connected Society in history, is also one of the most disconnected towards their own humanity. I believe everyone is alone fighting their own problems on their own when it shouldn't be that way, we're all here for each other, not to be against one another. There's also people that say just grow a thick skin but don't realize that every person interprets information differently, some don't care but others will take criticism like a personal attack that they carry with them forever. It's really lamentable that a young talented hard working girl decided to end her life, while the evil still spreads around the Internet like a plague searching for their next victim. That contrast in that comment made me shocked. I thought it was common sense to help those who can’t do it for themselves. Korea needs to include mental health issues in their education to spread more awareness to those who are still in school to become a more aware generation. And to those who are already adults, some serious work needs to happen to change this mentality. If not, just be kind to one another. If you don’t like or agree with something, do what I do and just shut up and learn to listen because just maybe you could be in the wrong. Learn to be humble. If it isn’t nice just don’t say it bc once you say something you can never take it back.

@@madstrawberrypie2614 depression is a behavioral disorder (i think that's the term) so the trick is to change your behavior.
since i've struggled with depression too, i understand how hard it can be. i was able to get out of it though, because i trained myself to see myself through a non-distorted view. i used to think i was bad, ugly, worthless, a burden, etc. but that is not the truth. and that's the same for you too, and everyone. we as human beings are supposed to be loved and be living happily and healthily. that's what we deserve simply for being human. what we do/think doesn't change that fact.
try to see the big picture of the world and not see only yourself. when you're only looking at yourself, you feel alone and your problems seem like the only thing that exist.
other people have worth and deserve to be loved, so why not you?
      your problems are not you.
      your problems are not you.
your problems are not you, okay?
if your depression were gone, you would still be you.
depression is a thinking habit. it's a habit of thinking bad about yourself.
if you have a habit of biting your nails and get rid of it, you're still you. same thing with depression, anxiety, ocd, etc.
you deserve to be happy and loved, even if you were the worst person on earth. just because you're human, that's enough. just because you're you, you're enough.
      please remember that, okay?
these are the things that i learned when i was depressed and anxious. these are the things that broke my chains and brought me to life.
i know i sound dramatic but it's the truth. after i got these truths, i've completely changed and have never been happier.
help other people, too. helping others and praying for them made me realize that i have worth and purpose, that i can do good in this world. it also made me happy to see the people that i care about being happy.

As someone who has been a big fan of Sulli and F(x) since 2013, and they were the ones that got me into KPop, hearing the news was absolutely heartbreaking. In the past 6 years, I've learned a lot about Asia and even made some friends, which is big for me since I never had many friends growing up, because I got into KPop. She meant a lot to me, and I wish I had the chance to tell her that.

You never know. One of the people that they were interviewing might have sended hate to Sulli. There’s a possibility.

When someone say even a mean word to me i get really sad imagine getting hate from huge number of people and give you malicious comments. I can't imagine how hurtful and depressed she must've been. I wish people were more careful of things they say to people and just for a second think of how they might feel if people were to treat them the same way they did to her.

Get Jesus in your life. I promise all those comments will not effect you at all. Instead you will be strengthened by them.

Rambha Crystal Snow, I totally agree with your sentiment. I too, wish that people would think before posting. But the problem with really vitriolic haters is that they don't really care. They seem to be so caught up in the negativity that reason doesn't apply. Or they're just trolls that get their kicks out of stirring up controversy. My daughters boyfriend who is now 21 used to be a troll. He was 13 and smart and thought it was great fun to rile people up. He didn't really have any interest or strong feelings one way or the other but just liked to cause trouble. Its all from total anonymity behind a keyboard that they can feel superior. It's horrible and sad.

You need to go back to reading hard bound books not reading comments online if you don't want to see hate comments

I hope your words don't cross to the people with depression. It sounds insincere and a hypocrite.
