You’re missing the context where he got a time violation previously for coughing before serving which is where the incident really started and where the problems started. True although the coughing looked just as half assed as the fake ball toss. But the ump was sort of a prick too and a stickler with the shot clock. The first warning was already unnecessary.
First of all, if you're going to analyze the situation, display and assess the rules leading to the violation. Second, wtf does his finances have to do with the situation? You are digging and reaching at straws with this, so stop the bullsh@t.

Rule states player must initiate their service motion before the shot clock hits zero… he tossed the ball so Frances did nothing wrong… You cannot leave that rule to interpretation because now the umpire can make those judgements if they do not like a player
Keep in mind top 10-30 players make about the same amount of money from sponsors as from tournaments. So thats about 24M over 9 years. Even if he spends 2M per year to cover coaching and tournament operations costs (which as you say is way overpaying). Hes still taking home 400k profit from each year the past 9 years and thats mostly after cost of living expenses.
As you alluded to, the "total prize money" doesn't include endorsements and sponsorships (which usually dwarfs the prize money amount). I doubt we'll see Tiafoe receiving food stamps any time soon. Don't cry for him.
Exactly they can't have it both ways the rules need to be across the board even for everyone the Umpire shouldn't get to pick which players they give a pass and which ones they don't
I didn't watch the whole match...but was there some bad calls earlier that caused him to react this way? Think we should focus on why he got angry and not the livelihood thingy.....'livelihood' was said in the moment of anger.....just my thots
Yep i watched the match and there were two previous time violation calls as well as a code violation for ball abuse. Frances was clearly dealing with some issues but I thought the ump was a bit of a prick too. Frances was agitated after losing the 2nd set and adressed the ump who was just ignoring him. A guy like Layani would've tried to defuse the situation. The automated shot clock is stupid because it prevents the umpires from showing their feel for the game.
Tiafoe was definitely wrong. Even though several top players have complained about the umpires at this tournament. Tiafoe by his own admission was out of order. He took accountability unlike some of the other pros who displayed worse behavior. However, Tiafoe should be heavily fined and maybe suspended for at least a month. I like Tiafoe but the rules are the rules
Great video breakdown, as you mentioned, there is something else brewing behind his blowout that is causing him stress, I agree that potentially Tiafoe has fallen into the live bigger than his career winnings allow

It seems many players are burned out after 10 months and US Open. Also, he gets sponsors, but he’s an LLC or however he’s set up his small business. so he pays high Taxes and SS in US. So figure half of earnings are immediately gone.
These athletes lavish lifestyles are always being discussed but not the hard work to get there. The athletes have coaching, travel, training and other expenses but can’t they deduct them from their taxes? Then they would need a bookkeeper, or an accountant. It should all be tax deductible.

Umpire was wrong in saying, i am not buying this. Rules are not for umpire or player to buy. A fake ball toss is a ball toss, Rules don’t mention anything about a fake ball toss, so time violation does not make sense here. I am not even a tiafoe fan and i think umpire was wrong here
Sports rules are not the same as laws. They are designed to ensure fairness, and when a player exploits a rule in bad faith, umpires absolutely have the discretion to uphold the integrity of the game and penalize the offender. That’s exactly what he did, and it was the right call. I’m often critical of tennis umpires, but in this instance, the umpire acted appropriately to prevent the exploitation of the rules.
@@TK-Tennis That just means rules have loophole to exploit. The rules need to be fixed then, player exploiting loophole at the 3rd set tiedbreaker for at best a few extra seconds is not ensuring fairness. I found the umpire's calls correct for other 2 controversial instances yesterday but this does not seem to be done for ensuring fairness
Well the umpire is a judge, so it is for him to buy things. We have to remember that there is another player to consider at the other end of the court who is affected by such decisions.
Read the actual rule. The time clock stops when "the ball is struck" not when the player tosses the ball in the air. To be reasonable, umpires usually stop the clock when a player starts their service motion, even before the ball is struck, and that includes instances of faulty ball tosses when the serve is then aborted, but this is a concession they don't have to make. In this case, it wasn't even a legitimate start of service motion. If a simple ball toss stopped the clock (and it doesn't, read the rule) the player could simply take the ball from the ball kid, immediately toss it in the air, and then take as long as they liked to catch their breath before the next serve. They can't and the umpire is not buying a completely BS claim that they can.
If his finances were so tight, then why act like a ten year old and get fined? Ddon't try to "play" the rules with a false ball toss - he didn't even take his racket back. Act like a real man, a decent human being, act like a Japanese man or a Canadian, instead of acting like the convicted woman beater Krygos? How does suspension or fines help you finances. sorry but this is terrible analysis. Tennis pros at the top 50 level make about 40-70% margin on their earnings. I.e. revenue - liabilities. The range depends on their lifestyle. Federer is documented at about 68% since he is extremely efficient and brings in tons of sponsorship. Tiafoe i suspect is probably 40-45%. So 12M * 0.4 is aroud 5M - 30% taxes which is 3.5M net savings going into his bank account for 9 years. Thats equivalent to a person SAVING about 388k a year for 9 fing years. I never suggested there are not margins of profit after expenses (and don't forget the agent fees from earnings and sponsorships). Margins don't equate to net worth as the margins are often spent on girlfriends, siblings, parents, friends, luxuries, bad investments and the like. There are countless of athletes who have earned many multiples more than Tiafoe that have went broke from living lifestyles they cannot afford. With all that said, even "if" he is fighting for his livelihood we agree he should be held accountable for this highly unprofessional outburst that is against the players code of conduct.
