    Have you ever wondered why stars twinkle? Do you know why astronomers hate twinkling stars? On this StarTalk explainer video, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are going to give you the answers.
    In order to understand twinkling stars we need to understand how far away the stars are from us. You’ll learn just how big and empty space can be. Neil gives some examples to put the distance between celestial objects into perspective.
    Find out about convection and mirages. Neil explains how the same scientific processes are causing stars to twinkle in the night. We discuss how the starlight is refracting its way through the atmosphere one pocket of air at a time. You’ll learn how astronomers figured out how to compensate for the refraction and how that led to the creation of "adaptive optics." All that, plus, you’ll find out why the first star you see tonight might, in fact, be a planet.

    I think this really puts into perspective how empty the universe is. The photons that have traveled for over a billion years in a straight line never once were stopped by another object. Then take that idea and multiple it by all the stars you see in the sky. Despite this epic journey, the photon's journey was stopped by your marble-sized eyeball.

    • @chrism3784
      @chrism3784 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are right but even more perspective your eyes cannot make out anything a billion light years away. Furthest object in the universe you can see and make out is Andromedia Galaxy which is about 2.5 million light years, and even then it's very faint and hard to see. Something billions of light years away and you look towards it, only a few photons of that object may hit your eyeball a minute, if that. That's why we need really large optics like the Hubble to stare at it for hours, collect the small amount of photons hitting it and then draw a picture from it.

    Neil and Chuck are a breath of fresh air. Btw, the melody itself for English speakers as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” was written by Mozart (originally “Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman.”) However, the words put to it originated as a poem written by the English author Jane Taylor and was published in 1806 as “The Star.” Sometime later the poem was set to Mozart's melody. I teach guitar to kids and this is one of the first songs they learn, I always mention to them who the composer of the original melody is

    Logic error: When someone sings, 'the first star I see tonight', s/he may actually mean it, by not wishing upon a planet and waiting to actually see a star. The song doesn't say, 'the first extraterrestrial object I see tonight'.

      Salesfarce says the platform can do just about anything, which is correct provided you hire consultants or force your developers to learn and work within their poorly-documented languages, APIs and workflows to custom-build your very expensive solution. What they sell is a multi-tenanted hodge-podge of evil technologies that will rob your business of it's identity, intellectual property and soul (oh let me not forget their ludicrous rate schedule that charges PER ROW OF DATA).
      This got me so worked up I actually un-subbed. It's aggravating enough to get sales pitches from educational channels, but they had to partner with one of the most dreaded and reviled products in IT.

    Twin Stars : Arundhati and Vashistha
    Twin stars observed during Hindu wedding ceremony :
    Thousands of years ago the ancient rishis in India could identify two tiny spots in the sky as a twin star system. They named it Arundhati-Vasistha.
    Mizar is known as Vashista and Alcor is known as Arundhati in traditional Indian astronomy. The pair is considered to symbolize marriage. Vashistha and Arundhati were a married couple. Arundhati and Vasistha were considered an ideal couple, symbolic of marital fulfillment and loyalty. During the wedding ceremonies of Hindus, one of the ritual is the groom shows the bride the double stars of Vasishta and Arundhati.
    In Hindu weddings, priests conducting a wedding ceremony allude to or point out the constellation as a symbol of the closeness marriage brings to a couple.
    Secret behind watching/pointing the stars :
    In most twin stars system one star is stationary and other rotates around it, while Arundhati and Vashishtha both rotate in synchrony. To tell that both husband and wife must do all things in sync and that husband must not rotate round the wife or wife should not dance to the tune of her husband, this ritual was made a part of the marriage ceremony. The greatness of our ancestors / scholars was that they could know that such a twin star system exists and how they rotate even without the telescope.
    A point to be noted, women in India had a higher stature in society. Its Arundhati-Vashistha and not Vashistha-Arundhati. Women had higher respect than men.

    Hi Nail and Chuck, thanks for your exciting program, I have 2 questions:
    1- Sometimes we see a halo around a full moon and it's clear that is very near to us so it would be most likely a cloud, but I wonder why is so perfectly round and has a donut shape with the moon on its center
    2- Can we hypothetically make a solar system in scale or at least a larger mass with a smaller one orbiting it like the Earth and its moon, I mean as you mentioned if we leave 2 marbles in scale (for the Earth and the Moon) in 30 feet distance in space and push the smaller marble a little bit, would it entangle to the bigger marble and orbit around it?
    Thanks

    5:24 someone ones told me that if the sun was the size of a Orange and earth a grain of Rice the distance would be from Luxemburg to Moskau

    • @RayRay-zt7bj
      @RayRay-zt7bj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that figure sounds nearly exactly correct. If the sun was the size of a cueball, the nearest star would be 977 miles (1,572 KM) from Baltimore to Miami. A cue ball is approximately 2.17 inches (5.5cm) and is about 25 -30% smaller than an orange. Therefore Luxemburg to Moscow would be somewhere aroundmn1,600 miles (2,575 km) away. That is given that a light-year is approximately 5.9 trillion miles and the distance to the nearest star is 4.2 light-years from the Sun.
