In The Matrix, Neo just spends his time getting high and looking for conspiracy theories over the Net. Then the guys from outside find him and wake him up. If our Matrix is as well built as in the movie, it's better for your mental health to say f**k it and live your actual life unworringly. If someday the guys come to wake you up, hey that's a nice surprise.
Wow Wow Wow - if the whole world could encapsulate this overwhelming respect and friendship towards each other - what a (more) wonderful place this would be!!!
I feel like Fishburne is annoyed and waiting for Neil to stop with his nitpicking of, after all, only a movie, but it might just be his usual demeanour.
Only moment I ever felt starstruck, despite meeting numerous celebrities in LA, was when I was serving at Venice Beach restaurant The Firehouse, I look up to attend a table and there is Morpheus waiting patiently with his daughter, I just looked at him ready to take the order and couldn’t even say “welcome” I was so starstruck… guy is a legend, and super nice and polite, even to a server.
And I honestly want to know more about your personal experiences without being too forward here. I met Greg Lemond and Victor Wooten in different venues for my interests back then. Graceful People. So, I think the world is smaller than ever before. 'Star-struck-ness not necessary' but we can be legendary in our own HUMAN exchanges every day.
First time watching The Matrix, the scene where Neo gets the Fed Ex package with the phone and Mr. Fishburne utters the line, “Do you know who this is?”, my Dad replied without hesitation, “Cowboy Curtis?” 😂🖤 Great episode 🖤
If we were to rewrite the movie now I think the quote would be, "we watched in horror as the tech bros marveled at their own magnificence as they gave birth to a product they called AI."
Let's not forget that the AI in the matrix tried to coexist peacefully until humans blocked out the sun to spite them. Humans destroyed the world, not the AI.
@@rasulsamad5860 In the context of the movie it means mankind doomed itself into being imprisoned inside of The Matrix. When the machines were about to win the war, human decided to "scorch the sky", and block all sunlight from reaching Earth, and cutting off the machines' main energy source. In response the machines started using humans as a new source of energy. Combined with a form of fusion, the machines were able provide enough energy for themselves to keep going and win the war. And in order to keep humans under their control, they created The Matrix. So were it not for humans cutting off the machines energy source, they would not have become the energy source themselves. Thus our fate was ironic. Or to put it in layman's terms: "F around and find out."

So much to see by those who have so much to say and my interests, probably like yours, we connect with this and appreciate the humanity that exists despite our possibly jaded 'trooper-tiredness'.
This is Neil's best show as far as I'm concerned , we need to have Laurence Fishburne back every few months and talk in detail about his films and science.
Why would Tyson assume the stuff fed to the humans could be made into batteries? For example, We eat the stuff from the trees but we do not eat the stuff the trees eat to grow.
The way they said "this is StarTalk" actually brought me back to when i was a child and would listen to *Car Talk* on NPR with my mother. Really wonderful episode, thank you so much.
I really loved this episode! I love Laurence Fishburne…he is one of my favorite actors and The Matrix is one of my favorite movies, too! I’m not a physicist (but I am a nurse with an interest in physics), and I’ve thought about the same things re: energy production and conversion using humans as batteries, as well. So happy you explained that Dr. Tyson! Your conversation with Fishburne here is so interesting and entertaining. Love y’all!
@ The new "woke" is just a large, vague melting pot of ideas that are left leaning, it has no value and no substance. Me being friends with a person who is not white could be defined as "woke", when in reality I'm just being a normal human being.
In formal computer science and mathematics, there is something called the Halting Problem, which is a program that is undecidable. It is a special program that can either cause a machine to run forever or halt. There is another concept called an Oracle Machine, which is a special machine with the ability to identify a halting problem. In the movie, Neo is faster than the machine and the Oracle is able to identify if Neo is The One.
This is magical. For my money, the first Matrix film is the perfect storm. Every line, every movement, every work of authorship, directing, cinematography, every single bit of casting, costuming all of it came together in SUCH a stunning, symphonic, philosophically substantive way, all while smashing itself through our eyes and ears, on into our brains. I ADORE that movie. It came at the perfect time, and it has influenced so much, and so, so many around the world. The whole series of films, the game, the animated works, the CONCEPT has been so culturally important to my generation. I was 15 when I got my VHS copy of the first movie, and I played it, rewound it, and played it again, over and over again for weeks, any chance I got. I wanted every moment of it etched into my brain like the habit of breathing, because it was so gorgeous and impactful. I want to take this chance, not that Mr Fishburn will ever read this, to thank him, and indeed everyone involved in those films, for providing me and legions of others globally, with the movie that, perhaps more than any other, shaped who my generation became as people. I don't feel it's an exaggeration. A whole cohort of young people, hormonal teens, entering into an age that the lessons our parents taught us were not enough to navigate, into a world that eschewed merit in favour of placation of algorithms and looking right on paper... That movie had so much to say, about tech, faith, critical thinking, philosophy and how important it is to become the most potent version of yourself, not just for your own benefit, but for everyone's benefit. Thanks Mr Fishburn, and everyone whose mind and body bent themselves to the task of making that movie happen. I can only speak for myself when I say, I am eternally and enormously grateful for your time and effort. Also, Neil, sorry, but I am pretty sure the guy who examines John Travolta's character in Phenomenon was actually Brent Spiner. I could be wrong, but I'd like to think I'd recognise Mr Data anywhere!
I'm too old to have gotten The Matrix bug. I was afraid it would break my brain. My Grandson keeps pushing me to watch it and its sequels. I like science but I doubted then, and more so since, that I could follow it.
31:15 That scene was absolutely necessary. That was the first interaction with The Oracle, and right away she's telling us that by telling Neo the future she's influencing things. It wasn't a cliche, it was the first hint that The Oracle isn't just a passive observer.
I think Neil is also forgetting they are in a simulation, and she can see the program script to know what's going to happen. Might be a small technical nuance, but it does avoid the clairvoyance cliche. He's also not seeing the humans as a source of thought and only as a source of energy: what's better than having billions of minds with unique ideas and thought processes to sift through as a sentient machine curious of the world? ( maybe it isn't explained enough in the movie )
Laurence was gracious for letting Neil "win," because it really wasn't even close. Also, I don't think Neil would have ever stopped otherwise, and he was starting to embarrass himself. He just never came close the that awesomeness that is Laurence Fishburne's vocal talent.
I didn't realize until this interview just HOW MUCH Laurence Fishburne changes his voice to perform as Morpheus. So awesome! Great talk. Loved it.
Yes, the spoon part was the pivot point of the script. It is all about Neo coming to the realisation that “There is no spoon”. Everything else is built around this simple idea. Something of the Buddhist idea “Everything is an illusion”, or some version of that.
Matrix is my favorite movie, this conversation of two great friends talking about it, and one of them is the REAL Morpheus, make my day, most of the actors don't really remember their lines, but the way Laurence Fishburne does OMG! Great show 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow never thought I'd see professor Neil Degrasse Tyson become a 10 year old kid again, just look at him all happy and excited to be talking to his film hero. 🙂 it's always a great sight to see such rare moments.
Why would Tyson assume the stuff fed to the humans could be made into batteries? For example, We eat the stuff from the trees but we do not eat the stuff the trees eat to grow.
Laurence is so cool for going into the Morpheus stuff and being playful with it, I’ve noticed in other interviews with actors, especially dramatic actors, they’re not really too into doing that kind of stuff. Great watch
About the batteries, originally the machines wants to use the humans as a neural network, but the writers feared that the public don't understand it. So instead of neurals we became batteries
I have a channel on addiction and overcoming it. One thing me and other addicts talk about is would we not become addicts if we had to do it over again. Most the time we are grateful that we were addicts because we got to experience this crazy up and down life and now that we are sober we are so much more grateful for the little things
Wow, I am an absolute geek because this conversation was thoroughly entertaining. Thank you, gentlemen. The matrix series is just brilliant. The architect scene could not be more perfect.
Dope thing abt the matrix is LF's wife also played in it, that fact that he understood the script made his character that much more convincing and iconic
Not sure it's the best, there's an old Samuel L Jackson interview that was done around the time of Attack Of The Clones that was hilarious! It was on British telly though so most people probably didn't see it.
This was so beautiful watching two friends reflect on such amazing movies and experiences together. So much so I wish I was there just to see it. Sounds funny but I didn’t want it to end😅. Just all around captivating and fun!
I've always loved Laurence Fishburne as a person and as an actor because he is the spit of my late father. My dad died at 39 when I was 6 in 1993. Laurence in his younger years reminds me of how my dad used to look and when I look at him now, I imagine that's what my dad would look like now. I absolutely love the matrix too ❤
@@zbagz01 I take that comment In the nicest and most respectful way imaginable. But not personally. I am a MONSTER as far as anyone else can know. We ALL are, in our own ways, relative to each other. The fact that Laurence Fishburne remembers the movie and understands it is actually amazing. That tells you a lot of his appreciation for said movie. It's actually not normal for actors working in big productions to have such an appreciation for their role. Many see big movies as gigs to make a living while they do smaller movies for their own enjoyment.
Nobody really expected The Matrix to be the box office hit that it was. I think the CGI really helped push it further out there, even though part of the reason they used so much CGI wasn't necessarily for the special fx, but because it was cheaper. LOL!
If our universe were a simulation like in The Matrix, what clues do you think we could look for to uncover the truth about its nature?

Love watching Niel geek out over science fiction
I don't think I've seen a man geek out so much. This wasn't even a podcast it was an hour in the life of Neil and Laurence.
This is so adorable seeing Neil so star struck 😊
Honestly I'm 10min in and im convinced they are either separated at birth or different multiversity versions of eachother.
A rare sight to see a grown man become a 10 year old again. Splendid 🙂 😊
I had to double-check how long that was when I saw your comment. It felt like 20 minutes! Lol
Two masterminds of the own Professions- love them both
SO MUCH FUN! When they giggle together..I lost it. Such a joy.
Amazing !!!!
So glad I saved this episode for my day off. Y’all are so cool together bruhs✊🏽
About the batteries, originally the machines wants to use the humans as a neural network, but the writers feared that the public don't understand it. So instead of neurals we became batteries
That makes sense.
I thought it was Warner brothers who made the decision to switch to batteries
so, matrix is rendered right in the minds keeping people only physically vegetable, win win
I would like to have been a fly on the wall at that meeting…😂
@ Seems, all those decision makers are now Disney employees.
My fav quote of Morpehus is "You think that's air you breathing now?". Matrix is an all time classic.
LITERALLY MY FAVORITE LINE
This line immediately makes me think of the 'farting in the Matrix' clip uploaded to TH-cam in the early days
This matchup of people to pair together for a podcast is the greatest person
"Because... you're not." Had be dyyyyying!!! Best episode, hands down!
Yoooooooooo... DID U HEAR EM...DONT COME FOR IKE 😂😂😂😂😂
Dope thing abt the matrix is LF's wife also played in it, that fact that he understood the script made his character that much more convincing and iconic
There is something incredibly endearing about two icons (Neil and Laurence) fanboying about James Earl Jones and Darth Vader.
Amazing episode!
This is so good it’s insane. Best interview ever. It makes the audience feel like we’re listening in on an old friend’s conversation.
Not sure it's the best, there's an old Samuel L Jackson interview that was done around the time of Attack Of The Clones that was hilarious! It was on British telly though so most people probably didn't see it.
@ I’m going to try and find that. Thanks for sharing!
@ It was 1 of the big British interviewers at the time. Not sure, but it I think it was Michael Parkinson.
Just from the intro I knew it was gold
This was so beautiful watching two friends reflect on such amazing movies and experiences together. So much so I wish I was there just to see it. Sounds funny but I didn’t want it to end😅. Just all around captivating and fun!
I've always loved Laurence Fishburne as a person and as an actor because he is the spit of my late father. My dad died at 39 when I was 6 in 1993. Laurence in his younger years reminds me of how my dad used to look and when I look at him now, I imagine that's what my dad would look like now. I absolutely love the matrix too ❤
Awww, I hope your father was as nice as Laurence seems to be. I bet he was.
@@zbagz01 I take that comment In the nicest and most respectful way imaginable. But not personally. I am a MONSTER as far as anyone else can know. We ALL are, in our own ways, relative to each other. Which makes us infinitely interesting to each other. So, you, to me, are a GOOD Monster. Thanks for the comment that reminds me of such.
Matrix was not a so big movie... It was still a risky concept, kudos to WB for taking it up
@@karlxmit Kinda like Jim Carrey is doing now with the Sonic movies! I mean, they aren't "Small" but.
Nobody really expected The Matrix to be the box office hit that it was. I think the CGI really helped push it further out there, even though part of the reason they used so much CGI wasn't necessarily for the special fx, but because it was cheaper. LOL!
"said movie"? You didn't say the movie.
So in Recognition of Abnormal for memory, deep understanding and jazz regurgitation, does that elevate Mr. Fishburne to, um... what? Human?
The Matrix (1999) one of most influential movies of all time.
was there any reason to put "(1999)"?
Cause Prince we gonna party like it 1999 and that was the party lol
11:22 He never said "Luke, I am your father", he said :"NO! I am your father" This is Star Wars 101
Wow.... What a really cool conversation... Congrats to Mr. Fishburne and Dr. Degrase Tyson
I LOVE how they try to out-Morpheus each other...this is so damn AWESOME! What a great episode
LOL, that was hilarious. 😄
Agreed!! ✨💖 that was fantastic!
Epic intro
The concept of two Morpheii together sent me back to the realm of the real 🤯
no Laurence Fish heard that Neil has a reputation (of cutting ppl off, rudeness) and Morpheus was maintaining his compousre
