I think our upward inflection is a mix of friendliness, wanting to include the other person in the conversation, and seeking their approval. It's endearing, but can get a bit monotonous if someone uses it too much.
@@candicemoll8386 It means mono-pitch (one frequency only) which is why the rising inflection by definition cannot be monotonous. But it can get repetitive. No speech is entirely a mono-tone, but as the tendency increases, the speaker becomes more tiring to listen to. Constant pitch modulation is the name of the game. If you want an example of someone moving toward monotony, you can't do better than Kym Gyngell, in his characterisation of Col'n Carpenter. The fewer times when he does depart from the flattish pitch adds to the emphasis and thus the comedy.
The only TH-camr that I admire the most, your smile, your voice and every time you giggles makes my heart melt, and also the way you teach us about Australian accent. You're the best!
Re Aussie politeness, we also say things like "give us a look" even though you're the only other person present and should be more like "give me a look". I think this is because it sounds more like an invitation to share with 'everyone', rather than an instruction.
English is not my first language, but I'm learning it since kindergarden. And it was so strange, since we were learning words in british, but talking in american (flat, lift etc.). So I had kind of mixed accent. But when I first time heard australian (H2O: just add water) I wanted to learn it. Plus, I really want to live and work in Australia as an actress. But I sound soo stupid talking aussie, it sounds like I'm mixing brit and american.😳

I love this tutorial! I’ve never really thought about it before, but I’m pretty good with accent melodies. Australian is the Only accent that I can’t hear in my head, so I really appreciate the vowel tips in your other videos!!! I’ve been reading a lot of Australian authors lately and I’m struggling with certain words, which throws off the entire accent in my head, which is why I looked up some tutorials!! Haha!!! Anyway, thanx a ton, also, you’re Really Effing Pretty!!!! ✌🏻✌🏻
My God, I love your lessons! Now I understand my friend Anne’s (a Perth native) accent/inflection! My daughter keeps telling me that I need to perfect an Aussie accent. That’s a tall order, but I’m up for the challenge! 😉 Oh, I’m BOTH [American] Irish and Italian! No offense taken! 🤣🤣
This way to tell some story which didn't finish yet like you ask a question all the time it sounds like we Brazilians will do when we're speaking at the same way
4:03 That video... Thats legit the video I have already been using lol. Cuz Im trying to get sort of an accidental australian accent. Cuz at one point I was watching grian’s hermitcraft videos literally 24/7 for a couple days trying to catch up, and I sort of started sounding like grian, whom is brittish. It took awhile for that to wear off. Literally months. So now Im going to see if I can get that to happen again, only with the australian accent and hear australians speaking. And that video is legit perfect to try this with, as the dude speaking has a very strong australian accent. I watched it 2 or 3 times and it was already effecting my speech.
I’ve never thought about the melody for an accent, been only focused on the vowels mostly. Thanks for such a good tip! I was also hoping for some examples of Aussie melodies to follow given by you. Can u perhaps include some example melodies for us to practice? I really wanna nail the Aussie accent!!
I saw now that you are back to making English videos, there is really a lack of people teaching English with an Australian accent. Thank you, I'll follow.
Yes, I'll continue doing both the tutorial style and also fun slang videos too. I have viewers who visit my channel for different reasons, so I do my best to mix it up sometimes, but always come back to basics. :-) Thanks for watching!

I don’t think that upward inflection is part of my speech, I remember the nuns knocking it out of us in school by teaching us how to read aloud and to speak correctly in general conversation. As the teacher says to Kim in the movie of the same name, “We don’t do that at St Xavier’s O’Hara!” News reporters also start many of their sentences with “now”, even when it doesn’t apply!
A good one to start with would be Kath and Kim. This is a comedy with some REALLY exaggerated Aussie accents, so the melody should be obvious. Try the exercise of pausing the show to copy the sounds!

This is a really great question. I wouldn't have thought that there is a difference between the male and female melody, but with the new millennial influence that might be changing a bit. I'll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion!
Question, I wanted to learn this accent but, while searching, I came along sites where Australians were expressing how much they dislike a "fake aussie accent" so now I'm low-key afraid to even try, would you say is just a bunch who think that way or is it most people who don't like when a non-Aussir tries to learn the accent? Sorry for bringing this up but I'm highly curious 👉👈😣
I think it's difficult for anyone to hear their own accent done badly. BUT! Don't let that discourage you. You have to be bad at an accent before you become 'good' at it. Anyone who can perform different accents perfectly, were 'bad' at it for a time. So practice as much as you can and use it anytime you like! Anyone who has a problem with it can go jump in the lake. And you can tell them that I said so! 😘
That is the same as the Los Angeles/Valley girl upspeak! Interesting. I find the LA one super annoying but not the Aussie one for some reason? Maybe because I associate it with dumb valley girls? After watching this video, I started noticing this melody/inflection in a few other English speaking countries as well. I wonder what its origins are?
