  • Back in early summer I planted 3 round tubs with sweet potatoes. The critters always get them in the ground. Here is the result, my biggest harvest ever!

    I know this is 3 years later, but I stumbled upon this video and I haven't smiled this much in a while. He was so happy on the 2nd bucket and it was adorable. I hope your gardening is still flourishing!

      Thank you for the kind words. Yes the garden is still going. I now grow the regular sweet potatoes and this year I have added in the white and purple sweet potatoes. Really looking forward to what all can be harvested this fall.

    I've garden my entire life from childhood to adult. I live in San Diego so we grow organic fruit & veggies all year long. There's nothing like it people don't know what their missing out on & the $$$$ they could save. Also, gardening is so cathartic, great exercise and a great stress reliever.

      The animals around here are glutton's. They take bites from every tomato even if it is only half ripe and pull down the corn stocks even if they are not ripe. Next year the garden will have a fence.

      I loved the Philippines... I did a few TDY's (temporary duty) at Clark Air Base in 86, and 87.. Just an incredible variety of wonderful fruits & vegetables in the markets... And they went down well with a cold Red Horse, or San Miguel.. And yes, the Spanish influence was still there, as the currency at the time was Pecos..

      I waited until we had a couple of near frost. Then it was supposed to be rainy for a couple of days. Had to get them out before the cold wet days made them rot. They have been fantastic. And except for some small ones sprouting for this year's crop, they are all eaten. Out 2 dogs get sweet potatoes in their homemade food and we eat a lot of them.

      Mexican cartel ! Thanks for the information! Can you please tell me how long it takes from planting the slips to harvest...? I’m a teacher and I have planted a garden with and for my students. I have been researching how to grow potatoes, but there is so much conflicting information about growing potatoes that I am confused at this point! Someone said that the leaves can also be eaten... do you know anything about that? Thank you for any feedback/help you are willing to give me! The slips were put in the ground in late January/early February and the last day of school is May 24th, so I figure I will be tending the garden all summer so that when my students return next school year in August I can teach my students about harvesting, cleaning, preparing and cooking our bounty! My students also want to invite the administrators to enjoy our bounty...! What time of the year do you harvest the potatoes please Sir? Do I have to wait for a frost? I live in Central Florida so it doesn’t get cold here until Christmas or even January! Do you have any information about growing other vegetables and fruits? I appreciate and want to thank you in advance for your kindness and compassion with all my questions, but I have been planning this garden for many years and I am humbled by my lack of knowledge in this endeavor!

    Also, do you cure them?

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We cure the sweet potatoes for 3 weeks before we start eating. We make our own dog food and pressure cook a lot of sweet potatoes to go into that. Our normal way to fix them for us is to microwave till almost done, then out on the grill at about 450F for 20-30 minutes. Cooks the skin and really carmelizes the sweet potatoes. So good. The smaller ones we cut into sweet potato French fries or slices and cook on the grill at high heat. We go through a lot of sweet potatoes. Far more nutritious than regular potatoes and so much more taste.

Sweet Potato Vine Weevil larvae live inside the sweet potato for example. Anyways that is an awesome harvest considering you lost a whole pot to critters, That would of been at least 60-70 pounds. One of the best sweet potato vids on all of youtube.

    How can I start container gardening w/o spending a fortune? My soil is the stuff of adobe bricks. In a high population density area, my yard is size of postage stamp (call zero lot line). and shaded by two story house next door. i hv a patch, about 10'x20' that gets full sun from noon until sundown. I can get all the free compost I can carry from the city. Potting soil and amendments are too freaking expensive! Nurseries used to take back used containers & let them go for a song. Now they do not due to spread of disease. I'm thinking of going vertical, saving 2-liter bottles, growing mostly green, perhaps a potato tower.

    • @GrowAndEatThis
      @GrowAndEatThis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You have a great size area for gardening. garbage bags to go get the free compost. You can use the black garbage bags for containers. Just pile in the compost. May need to buy some lime to add. That is cheap. Cut some holes in the bottom of the bags for drainage. Ready to go slightly raised bed. Fertilizer? Easy, compost everything you can. Leaves, veggie waste from the kitchen, grass clippings are great. If people put out their grass clippings in bags for the garbage then go for it! Already packaged and ready to take home. Decide what you like to eat and grow that. My fav is peppers so I will have a lot of pepper plants. Trimmed limbs make growing up easy.

    Awesome haul man I love them sweet potatoes even if they shaped funny like you said they taste the same and sometimes one potato can be a whole dinner. So thats a lot of food you just picked bet they can't go to the store and get 40 pound for what you paid for those 2 baskets full of potatoes.
