  • Harvesting Garnet sweet potatoes plus garden tips (not Beauregard). Watch to the end for how-to make the grow bed. The soil mix by measure: 1/3 peat moss (fluffed), 1/3 coarse vermiculite, 1/3 is a mixture of 4-5 different quality composts and I also add a little complete organic "compost"/fertilizer called Revita Pro which is sea kelp, humate, feather meal, bone meal and sulfate of potash

    It's like uncovering ancient Egyptian artifacts the way you have to dig around the soil and not break them and just pull them up like regular potatoes. I'm going to try for the 1st time this Spring to plant sweet potatoes in Connecticut.

    First time gardener. I planted my first bed of sweet potatoes. I got 5 large ones. I was disappointed with the rest. They were small. I guess the soil was not deep enough. I will try again. Zone 10 South Florida

      I'm sorry to hear of the small harvest. It could be shallow or hard soil, soil nutrient issues, or trimming the leaves (which make food for the plant to make the sweet potatoes). I hope the rest of your garden was a success!

    It’s a little work since your raised beds are full of planting medium already but you should line the bottom of your raised bed with hardware cloth then add your soil on top of the hardware cloth. This is a guaranteed mole/vole prevention from burrowing up from the bottom.

    • @LeslieCaza
      @LeslieCaza  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    BEAUTIFUL CROP!!! I wonder if you put ground garlic in the soil, will the rodents still come to eat the potatoes. I know when I grew ONIONS nothing touched them, but the gophers in California demolished my cabbage and broccoli. A friend on mines grew beautiful tomatoes and she used garlic in soil to stop the gophers from eating them.. I think most rodents don't like the pungent odor of onions and garlic. Blessings

    What variety of sweet potato did you grow? How often did you water? and did you fertilize.

    • @LeslieCaza
      @LeslieCaza  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are Garnets. I started the slips from an organic sweet potato. I try to keep the soil like a wrung out sponge. With my raised beds, they can dry out quickly, so in the heat of summer, usually every 1-2 days. If they were grown in the ground, I likely would have watered less. I fertilize with plenty of quality compost and a lily complete organic fertilizer called Revita Pro.

      @@LeslieCaza Thank you so much. I tried this year for the first time and it was pretty bad. They all split deeply and there was not much in the ground. Did not get to taste home grown sweet potatoes this time.

      @LeslieCaza  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dianacoburn8269 I found this for you from an extension office. "What makes sweet potatoes crack and split? A. Heavy rains or too much irrigation during the final 3 to 4 weeks before harvest may cause the roots to split, especially if conditions have been dry for a period before late water application begins."

      @@LeslieCaza That mekes sense I am in Utah. We have been dealing with the terrible drought and heat. I know I must have over-watered because I was worried about them getting too dry.

    How do you store the harvested Sweet Potatoes?

    • @LeslieCaza
      @LeslieCaza  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      After curing them, ( see my video on how to make sweet potatoes sweet), I wrapped them in packing paper which is like a newsprint paper and store them in apple boxes in a room of our house that is relatively cool. It's April and our Sept harvest is still very nice.

    I planted a bunch in peat moss this year. What are your thoughts?

    • @LeslieCaza
      @LeslieCaza  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have never tried that before. I find that peat moss can get pretty dry and hard so you'll need to be very careful to keep it moist. Also you need something to fertilize the plants so I would add some compost for sure or a complete organic fertilizer.
