  • So many sweet potatoes from 2 containers. A summer of record heat waves and extreme drought. Still these 2 containers did the job.

    I grow mine in raised beds with carefully developed organic soil (compost, mulch, native clay, etc.) which is never tilled, but is always nice and fluffy. I get a similar harvest from each plant, but one is always twice as big as your biggest one. They are all creamy, not fibrous. I save space by tying up the vines on a cylinder of 5' high heavy wire fencing to go up and then down again. From one of the large sweet potatoes I get about 10 sprouts. I root them and plant them around the fencing (5 around each of two cylinders). I get about 6 potatoes from each plant for a total of 60 potatoes in autumn from just that one potato and two 3' diameter cylinders. They store well on the floor in an open crate over the winter; they last until May.

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really have to try training the vines up something. That area always gets so out of control that other plants get swallowed up and weeds get a super start.

    • @virginiamoss7045
      @virginiamoss7045 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djrramsey They don't train well; You have to tie them up with twisty ties (used) or something until they reach the top where they just drape back down. I save my twisty ties from the grocery store and other sources. Getting the vines off the trellis requires either removing all the ties or cutting the vines out. I cut the vines into small pieces for my compost pile so I do the latter. I do let some vines run into the rest of the garden if there is room under taller stuff.

    Very impressive. I bet the dark color of the containers helped warm them up. Wish I knew the growing zone there. I've been watching sweet potato videos and this is the best. Glad you were saving the soil, must of the others just dump it where they can't save it for recycling. Now to look at how they were planted. I live in zone 4a, so it is not hot for long, but I keep experimenting.

    What kind of soil mix did you use in those containers? Do you use a light mix like Pro-Mix with perlite, or a heavier mix like a potting soil? I'm new to sweet potatoes and I'm in the North which makes things more difficult with a heat loving crop... Thanks.

    • @GrowAndEatThis
      @GrowAndEatThis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Around here the potting mix available is Miracle Grow. I use 1/2 Miracle Grow, 1/2 my own compost and then add a lot of perlite to make it lighter for the potatoes to form. Could use all potting mix and add perlite to get the light soil.

      I go from soil temp in the mid 50Fs (mid May to early June) until the the leaves start dying back (late Sept early October). Usually means 120-130 days. I am going to try to harvest some sweet potatoes that went in on May 14. Those will be 127 days. 51F outside this morning and I really need the space to get in some fall veggies. I will put up a video of how this goes.

      Stick your finger in the soil an inch or two. If moist then you are ok. If dry you need to water. Late summer for me is drought time. Water then is every day, sometimes two times. If good rains a couple times a week they will have plenty of water.

    I just planted sweet potatoes in a raised bed here in Sydney, Australia. Can I ask what fertiliser you used and the NPK please? My research so far is you need a low nitrogen fertiliser, is that correct? Your joy is infectious, I hope I get similar results 😁

    • @GrowAndEatThis
      @GrowAndEatThis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I start out with a higher nitrogen because you need the leaves and vines to get started. Then to the 2nd numbers to encourage root formation. I use worm castings, worm tea, fish emulsion, compost and one of the 'tone' organic ferts.

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They should make potatoes. Cut the sprouts into decent size pieces and let them harden off (dry on the cuts) for a day. Then they will be ready to plant. In my experience if I plant too big of a piece of potato then it seems it just keeps living off the potato instead of making new potatoes. Good luck. Home grown potatoes of any kind taste so much better.

    how deep the containers?

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Round ones are about 16" deep. Rectangular ones are 12". Deeper is better to get better formed potatoes.

    Can you tell us what the soil was?

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The soil is 1/2 my compost, 1/2 of a commercial potting mix and then add a lot of perlite to make it as light and airy as possible. Instead of perlite could use ground up leaves or straw.

    How many slips produced all those sweet potatoes

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I put 2 or 3 slips in a container. I want plenty of room for the formation of potatoes. Any more slips and I might get more potatoes, but they will be small and skinny.

      @@djrramsey thanks. I’ve ordered my slips and your videos have me excited about planting them.

    This channel has 21k+ subs and yet most uploads can't even reach 1k views... What is the point of subbing if they won't even click the vid then get out if they don't like the content just for the channel to get views??

    • @GrowAndEatThis
      @GrowAndEatThis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of these subscriptions are from Asia or the Philippines. I do not know why a couple of videos get so many views and others get almost none. Even those on the same topic. Drives me nuts trying to decide why this happens. Maybe how they access the internet makes subscribing difficult. No idea.

      @@GrowAndEatThis well,, just keep grinding. Its really rough to get stable on you tube.. Also may I suggest that you take on a wide variety of gardening vids then focus on the topics that gets the most views..
