There should be a list of rules for booking a monster character in wrestling. 1. they should win at least 70% of their matches. 2. They shouldn't be losing to Cruiserweights clean, or at least not on free TV. 3. This one should go without saying, but they shouldn't ever lose via submission. Nothing kills any monster characters credibility quicker than seeing them tap out. 4. Look at how the Undertaker was portrayed. This should be the standard for booking Monster characters. 5. Look at Bray Wyatt. This is how you don't book a monster character.

The WWE ECW Zombie actually had a purpose. A new WWE video game had just been released and one of the major customizations you could do when creating a custom wrestler was that of a zombie.
The Zombie was in 06. That game was SVR 09. SyFy told WWE they needed something sci-fi on the show so they brought out a zombie to satisfy them and got rid of it immediately.
I really like The Boogyman and I was disapointed he wasn't on the RAW Halloween episode like the internet rumours said. I also think he could have a good fued with Braun Strowman or The Wyatt Family if it was written right. WWE really enjoys their missed opportunities.
I feel like Sandman clubbing the WWECW Zombie wasn't scripted, and he just thought to himself "God, this is *too* stupid, I'ma stop it now before it kills any and all momentum this show could have."

Mordecai, to me, was a very good character and true to form. He played the near perfect zealot and could have been a great character. But, you know about the Vince favoritism scale, don't you?
I'm guessing the point of the zombie was to make fans of the real ECW nervous and think "oh god, they're going to turn it all into a farce" and then the Sandman comes out and beats the dust out of him and everyone was supposed to think "false alarm, it was all a clever ruse to make me THINK that ECW was going to become a fucking joke when in reality it will survive with its old charm intact." Oh, those poor bastards.

I recall him being in a WWF/E Sega Genesis video game. I just don't remember the name of the game. I did get to meet Charles Wright at a convention about a year ago in his Godfather wardrobe. He is bigger in-person and is a nice guy.
Towards the end I was starting to think the Yeti wasn't going to make the list but then he was included with the whole Dungeon of Doom at the end. Very well done. As mentioned these characters lose their scariness when the baby faces bury them with ease but when I was a little kid Papa Shango legit terrified me.
I was half-anticipating a James Mitchell appearance at the end. Anyway, fun list and idea Brian, good stuff. I know I'd be in the minority here but I actually liked Mordecai, it was a great look, and the idea of a overly self righteous religious zealot was new at the time (not counting someone like Brother Love). He was booked HORRIBLY, placing him in a feud with Bob f'n Holly of ALL people is a good way to ensure the character would get shit on. HM to Judas Mesias, as well as 1/3 of the Lucha Underground roster for corny, camp spookiness.
Fun fact: when ECW premiered on SciFi, the network nitwits wanted them to "work science fiction elements into the shows," since it would be several years before they were "SyFy" instead. WWECW were like "Uh... we're a wrestling show, what are we supposed to do, have the wrestlers fight horror movie monsters or something?" And then immediately pissed themselves when the network goons smiled. (Note: the above is a paraphrasing, and the "fact" is based off of things said by former ECW crew without evidence besides multiple stories)

I can think of one Worst Scary Wrestler. Kizarny I didnt watch wrestling at the point but from what i heard, he had a crazy carnival gimmick. He debuted in Smackdown of 2009 against MVP and then a month later after appearing in a battle royal. He then dissapeared!!
My assumption with The Zombie was that it was meant as a wink and a nod to the concerns people had about a WWE-run ECW. What was WWE was doing when ECW originally rose up as an alternative? Having goofy cartoony characters like Duke Droese and the Godwinns. So what's the first guy WWE sends out when they run their own version of ECW? A goofy, cartoony character - The Zombie. And then they IMMEDIATELY send out The Sandman to beat the crap out of him. So the idea was that the ECW originals were going to make sure that the WWE-ification of ECW wasn't going to happen. Not that it didn't happen in the end, anyway, but that was the idea at the time. As far as the Marella/Boogeyman incident, my understanding was not that Marella was a plant, but rather that it was his day off and he was there with his family.

My assumption with The Zombie was that it was meant as a wink and a nod to the concerns people had about a WWE-run ECW.
What was WWE was doing when ECW originally rose up as an alternative? Having goofy cartoony characters like Duke Droese and the Godwinns.
So what's the first guy WWE sends out when they run their own version of ECW? A goofy, cartoony character - The Zombie.
And then they IMMEDIATELY send out The Sandman to beat the crap out of him.
So the idea was that the ECW originals were going to make sure that the WWE-ification of ECW wasn't going to happen.
Not that it didn't happen in the end, anyway, but that was the idea at the time.
