Thanks for being one of the few people to thoroughly test this with OG hardware. Most others only test the wireless kit with the switch or other emulators.
Been using this replacement for 8 months now. Can safely say that this is the definitive replacement for n64 analogs. Im not a speedrunner but im extremely picky with analog precision, im very happy with both of my sticks. Have beaten both perfect dark and goldeneye with zero issues, also got 100% on starfox in both normal and expert, finished Jet force gemini and rocket robot on wheels with it too. Very accurate and honestly i prefer it over an OEM stick.
That's the kind of real-world testimonial I'm looking for. "Speedrunners" appear genetically incapable of being satisfied by ANYTHING, but all I want to know is if a normal person can enjoy playing their games without feeling held back by inputs. 👌
@@Orpheusftw Well, im very picky when it comes to analog precision, i can safely say this module is good enough even for PD and GE, speedrunners are a plague tbh, they're only good for hoarding controllers ( and destroying them) and trooning out.
Thanks for the insight. I'm looking for a cost effective alternative just to play some casual Mario party and Mario Kart with my friends and not have to deal with over sensitive sticks.
@@Seth______ I'll add that I'm also pretty happy with mine, now that I've had it for a while since commenting. I've played both of those games, among others, and haven't had an issue. My only small complaint with the kit is, I don't know if maybe the PCBs are a bit thicker or something, but the buttons/d-pad all feel different... "tighter." Not in a satisfying way. They all work, but just feel wrong to me. Acceptable trade-off, imo.
Not a good idea. Firstly, 1st party devs are cheaping out hard on the sticks. The potentiometers are prone to wearing down. A lot of 3rd party controller manufacturers have done better jobs. They have nailed sensitivity with their n64 stick, but it will wear down over time cause it doesn't use hall effects sensors. Which the original n64 stick had BTW
Thank you so much man. You’re really thorough with your review and explaining how everything goes because my green Funtastic controller has a messed up joystick and I needed to replace it so I decided just to go on and do this. I absolutely love it and now I wanna do it for the rest of my controllers eventually. Again, thank you.
I think if 8bitdo would release a way to self calibrate the joystick, it would end up being perfect. you could also specify ranges if you need to overshoot just a bit for some games that expect it and didn't completely follow nintendo's design recommendations.
This is absolutely the most usefull and comprehensive look at this stick i've seen. Thankyou very much, this looks like it'll be the replacement i've been looking for all this time.
@@ArchadesGames That's really great to hear! I know that hall effect sensors arn't supposed to wear in the same way that the old 64 sticks did, but knowing they're actually durable months after the review is exactly what I need to know.
Nice videos on these N64 replacement sticks. Love the detailed analysis. Which would you say is the best after all our trials (irrespective if its GCN design or a replica of the OEM) in terms of most accurate playability? If an OEM replica, does the potential wear due to better playability outweigh any of the GCN style sticks? Have any of these companies taken your feedback onboard and are they panning to do updated versions?
In the future I think you should do first impressions in the game before looking at the data to see if you notice anything, then look at the data, then go back to the game with the data so it doesnt bias you the first time
I have the mod kit but haven't bothered to use it yet. Doesn't do anything for me on real hardware and Switch N64 emulation is trash. I also have a Raphnet Adapter for PC so again not useful for me there either 😅 one day I might finally use it.
Thank you very much for this video. Honestly, when I saw the benchmark results of the analog stick I was fired up because how really close they are to the original. Also, the results look like that of an used OEM analog stick.
@@ArchadesGames I came back to my original N64 controllers after noticing the sensivity of the Brawler 64's analog stick. Pin point aiming or sneaking in any direction are very difficult to do with the Brawler 64. Eventually, I didn't like to use the Brawler 64 anymore because of it's slippery surface, hard button feel and weird design of the D-pad*. I didn't want to use my original N64 controller due to the easy deterioration of the analog stick. I randomly discovered 8Bitdo and Retrobit released new versions of the GC analog stick for the N64. After watching your and MrWelbig's video about them I ordered 3 8Bitdo analog sticks. You know, the original analog stick is good with it's own accuracy. But because of the build design and the resulted deterioration makes me think the original analog stick is like marmite.
@@ArchadesGames * The D-Pad is weird. I don't know the technicality of the stuff nor can I describe it with words very well. Notice that the overall feel of the original N64 controller is very smooth and it feels good on the hands. The Brawler 64 is different. The D-Pad on the original N64 is very smooth, diagonal inputs are easy and there are no lags. The D-Pad on the Brawler 64 is strange. Not only is the button pressing hard (and my thumb slightly starts hurt) but it seems there is an input lag. Also, it doesn't always recognize diagonal inputs properly. I have noticed this while playing G.A.S.P. 64. Eventually, I have decided to no longer use the controller. But hey, atleast there is the turbo feature.
@@ArchadesGames I don't understand why Retrofighters haven't released a new iteration of the controller yet that adressed the issues I have pointed out. It isn't really a smooth experience for me. The analog stick feels slippery, too and it starts to eventually hurt, aswell. I own the Brawler 64 v2 and I there wasn't a new iteration since 2018.
man I feel like all that needs to happen here is for someone to create a better outer grey housing.. one that only allows the stick to travel exactly within the OG N64 Octagon. Its def not A-symmetrical and more of a taller octagon around the original N64 stick.. being able to hit that exact diagonal pocket was important in many N64 games, along w tension. All said, that sensitivity looks fantastic though, dammit were soo close!! lol
I’m interested in dropping one of these in a GC controller! Since the sticks are mechanically compatible (I have a GC stick in my Japanese 2tone Mario Kart 64 controller), I’d like to put one of these in one of my spare GC pads.
I bought it and I loved it. It works perfect on the N64 console. But when I connect the controller to a N Switch via Hyperkin two port adapter the 8bitdo analog is drifting to the right and there's no way to use the calibration feature because N64 controller dont have an X button.
I just got this stick as a replacement for my worn out stick and the awful “sharpshooter” stick I also tried. I’m trying to beat the Control level on 00 agent in Goldeneye and I’m finding the 8bitdo stick to be too sensitive for precise aim control. Are there any other Hall effect sticks available that aren’t overly sensitive like this one?
Great video! BTW, how's the spin attack on Ocarina of Time? As some who unfortunately uses a GC-style replacement stick, I can only get a spin attack about 2 out of 10 times. Is it consistent with this joystick?
I can only get it like 2/10 times on any controller OEM or otherwise 😅 but yeah it functions as I have come to expect it to. Perhaps giving me 4-6/10 times. But again I suck at them.
Honestly, based on the data these sticks give you can expect it to be a close approximation of the original in performance. Steppings are really good for a modern N64 stick, deadzones are no concern, and ranges all line-up practically 1:1. Just that one small issue with the physical diagonal gating not lining up quite right with the physical build. The larger stick gives better precision where it matters and the whole thing is vastly more comfortable than the plastic OEM stick. I should hurry up and put out my final review for it 😂
Are these licensed out from Retrobit to 8bitdo? They have the exact gating issues as the Retrobit...if they're not collaborating I will feel a new disdane stealing a product from the little guys.

Nice, that is exactly what I wanted to read about this mod
I wish Nintendo would just sell replacement joysticks themselves I'd buy a lifetime supply
With 3d printing and manufacturing becoming possible in-home, Nintendo really has no excuse not to. Hopefully soon we can 'replicate' our own lol

Again, same with the Retro Bit version video, this stick literally speaks for itself once I saw the Goldeneye test. 😁
If results translate to other modules this is a fantastic option for most people!
Yes! exactly what I was hoping for. Totally getting it. Keep the good content archades you’re amazing!
Yeah, this is not what other images led me to believe was the case. I was very pleasantly surprised.
I wonder if within the timeframe of the initial launch if they fixed it or something. Either way this is excellent news.

The only thing I could see being problematic about that is it would mess up the built-in range values since it expects this octagonal gate.
