I loved the original since it was first posted, awesome to see an HD version! The anime this is from is called "Memories" it's a set of three short films with sci fi themes. The scenes used in this video are from the segment called 'Magnetic Rose', directed by Kōji Morimoto (Akira, The Animatrix) written by Satoshi Kon (Patlabor 2, Tokyo Godfathers, Perfect Blue, Paprika) I ordered the DVD of Memories the day I first saw this video over 20 years ago...
that's why it felt so thought provoking, with those two names! it just kinda sits in your brain and makes you think. makes me wish more animes would do that now a days.
Loved this short it is that perfect balance of ghost story and sci-fi and makes you wonder is it a ghost, a buggy AI, both there is no clear answer and in the end it all is the same and we are left with silence.
I feel like it's kinda at the place where the line between technology and Magic gets blurry. I always thought that it was simply an AI going crazy for all the isolation, where it starts acting like a Wraith.
The original audio in Memories by Katsuhiro Otomo used the music of Madame Butterfly by Puccini (if I recall correctly; it's been awhile) - the phantom of the opera was never referenced. That said, the Phantom music overlay was very well done in this music video tribute!
Initially I thought this was from Millenium Actress or Ghost in the Shell, but now I know it's from Memories. Man, it is such an obscure and underrated gem but it suits this EDM version perfectly. Very haunting indeed.

Same here. This amv had so many cool things I'd never seen before. It was a the front of my mind for every story idea, every music idea, every drawing idea for years and years. I don't think any other amv made as much an impact on me as this did and I used to download dozens a day.

I really appreciate you and anyone who made this AMV because I finally decided to watch Magnetic rose for around a hour ago and man….this is absolutely wonderful film , as someone who had problems about don’t know what to write and think + has short focusing, this film made me think that 45 minutes are too short, the story is easy to understand yet it come with many great things, art style, music, transitions between the scenes, the atmosphere….it can consider as horror sci fi animation too. And sadly this made me miss Satoshi Kon again….what a wonderful artist who still gave inspiration even though he no longer on this world;-;

I used to have this DVD and this was my favorite story of the trilogy. The gas one was my second favorite cause it was hilarious XD this one was so hauntingly beautiful reminded me of Kaku Renbo

Don't worry. I saw it as a high schooler and cried uncontrollably.
Then I bought the DVD and rewatched it, and cried again.
It's incredibly powerful.

If in the US, look up the Anime "Memories" circa 2004 [I think VHS as 95ish]. IT had 3 short films as one DVD and this was one of them.
