  • When I fixed the AEG radio, I added a speaker output, remember?
    Well, it's time to fix a speaker to plug into that output!
    Jänseidsmäßig Thanks to Richard for GIVING the Speaker to me!
    Many thanks to Daniel - he GAVE me the cloth-covered cables.
    Enjoy!

    Nice job and bakelite is a pleasing material to handle & smell. Has a nice quality feel to it and is surprisingly durable.
    However, a word of caution for future projects using bakelite, some contain asbestos, but is not readily identifiable, so best to assume that all old bakelite products are an asbestos containing material and treated as such, so no sanding, or if you really must, take precautions with proper PPE.

    A good trick is to first stretch cloth on a thin wooden frame to make it taut and flat, then glue it into the cabinet. Then the wooden frame can be sliced away.

    Nice job on the restoration, how does it sound to you? How does it compare to the others?

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has a little less treble - sounds a little dull in comparison.
      That may either be due to its age (speaker tech wasn't that evolved in 1930, after all), or due to the magnet getting a little weak - high frequencies would take more energy than low ones, I'd imagine.
      Might also be my attempt at fixing the cone - who knows.
      But all in all, I'm really surprised with the quality. I expected tinny, soddy sound from it, but you still get quite alot of detail out of it!

    • @AstraWerke

      I've had bad experiences with trying to stretch patterned cloth - it just distorts the shape weirdly.

  • @paulwomack5866
    @paulwomack5866 ปีที่แล้ว

    I suspect the bakelite might benefit from a lacquer coat; or (less permanently) a simple wax polish.
    Could you tell me (everybody) more about the speaker drive design? It's so completely unlike a modern speaker! Everything's in the front, not the back!

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's really quite simple: Wedged between the horshoe magnet is the voicecoil - just a bunch of wire around a spool.
      The fixture that clamps the spool in the magnet leaves a slot at each end of the spool, threaded through which is a thin metal strip.
      Two feet are screwed onto the metal strip, they're soldered into a fork which transmits the vibrations from the strip onto the speaker.
      Edit: Having written that down now makes it sound not simple at all xD

    • @AstraWerke

      As far as cleaning records goes, I just gently scrub them with soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge.
      Regarding the brass polish, I'll admit it's the only polish I have that actually does anything. My chrome polish is a joke and the paint polish is far too fine to do anything on plastic.

    Be happy that this speaker system is not made from zinc like many of them are. They all get brittle and are nearly impossible to repair.
    The bakelite has too much filling material and is already damaged too far. If you want it to be more shiny just clear coat it.
    I'm not a fan of connecting one of these speakers to a radio as it always changes the load impedance on your output tube and moves the operating point. Even if the manufacturer made it this way it's often far from being ideal to use a radio that way…

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I'll leave it the way it is - if it had some beautiful graining like the AEG, a clear-coat would be worth it, but the way it is right now is perfectly fine for my standards.
      I understand your worries, but to be honest, I couldn't notice any difference in the radio's performance with or without the speaker attached.
