dude your suikoden 1 story made me misty eyed. it reminds me so much of discovering the series myself as a 9 or 10 year old. your ranking of 5 also is making me consider replaying it. great vid.
One of my childhood regrets was that I never got to play Suikoden 1. Looking at your vid it brought back memories of the others I played over and over as a kid, particularly 2 (fav) and 4 (I had a soft spot for it). With the re-master I'm looking forward to finally playing the game that started it all. Thank you for the vid.
your Suikoden 1 story are similiar to mine, my bigger brother bought it and i was so in love with the game i played it every day for months, dreamt about it, talked about it all the time and it made me into a gamer =) you earned my sub
It just shows what a truly magical experience the Suikoden games are to have that kind of effect of people. Thank you for the sub. I really appreciate it!
great video, while i do agree with your points on suikoden 1 i will still always put that game #1 in my suikoden list hahah. also i really loved listening to you talk about your introduction to the suikoden games.
I can see why it's your #1. It's an incredible game. I really hope the remaster fixes the UI and inventory. Give me Suikoden 1 with Suikoden 2's UI and inventory system. Thanks! I thought personal stories would make for a better video that just blabbing about the games. I tried to sprinkle some in where I could.
@@CulganValya yea i mean honestly for a remaster better ui and inventory management would make it really good from what i saw in the trailer they did add running animation to Tir instead of just fast walking LOL yea honestly listening about your history of the game was heartwarming in a sense its a good way to express why you feel the way you do about it.
@@MaximzM He actually had a running animation in the original version. It was just unused for some reason. It's in his sprite sheet. It's great to see them using it this time. It looks so much better than his goofy sped up walking animation. They also used the Sega Saturn versions opening movie instead of the Playstation opening, so I'm hoping they'll add some of the Saturn content. Although I expect they won't.
Lovely video, I especially enjoyed hearing your memories with Suikoden 1! Funnily enough I only got into this series after the remaster announcement for S1/2 (& ended up beating S1-5 + Tactics) but it's already left a strong impression on me, and I'd say Suikoden 5 in particular & 1/2 were my faves, but I have a positive feeling on all the Suiko games I played. S4's music (in particular the rune of punishment theme) was so memorable to me despite wishing the story and characters were a lot more fleshed out. While I didn't play it myself, I actually thought Woven web of the century was quite an interesting game when watching a video summary on youtube. Different, but not in such a bad way? I'll play the fan translation one day to get the full experience
Suikoden 1, 2 and 5 are definitely the most popular entries with the majority of the fandom. 3 is an iffy entry for most. People who played 1 and 2 before 3 find a lot of issues with 3, but people who started the series with 3 absolutely love it to death. I agree with you on Suikoden 4. It's got a great soundtrack. The Rune of Punishment theme is beautiful. It's a real shame the story and characters weren't fleshed out. It could've been something great, but we the whole experience felt unfinished. Tactics certainly helps expand on it, and makes it more enjoyable, but there's still too much missing from 4 to make it a complete experience. Woven Web of the Century is about as bland and generic as low budget rpgs game. Once the initial buzz of finally being able to play it wore off after the first couple of hours, I just wasn't vibing with it. I didn't like it at all. I'm honestly hard pressed to say anything positive of Woven Web. A lot of people did enjoy the game though, it just wasn't my thing.
Ah the memories, remember I played suikoden 1 at my uncles ps1 way back, was hooked directly since I used to play FF at his ps as well. Don’t think I ever finished it though, 15-20 years later I started to think about that game, didn’t really remember what it was or what title it was. Found out it was suikoden 1, played it on an emulator on pc, I was hooked. The feeling, everything about it. I usually play through it 1 time each 6 months, just for the feeling and it makes me feel so relaxed. It makes me forget about every bad things that that is happening, it’s me in an suikoden world. Suikoden 1 is my number one game and will always be.
Stumbled across this video and you've got yourself another subscriber. Can't argue with the list at all, as much as I would want to push Suikoden III higher, you make solid points about the combat system. Party battles and army battles just took such a huge step backwards from Suikoden II. I remember being somewhat disappointed with the game overall when it came out, largely due to the switch from 2D sprites, the lack of Viktor & Flik (I was young and a fanboy), etc etc, but mostly because it just had such a tough act to follow in the second entry. Replaying it occasionally over the years I've come to appreciate it so much more, and while there are loads of problems with it, it's the characters and story that really shine, and more than that, the *atmosphere* of the game is something really special to me. Anyway, I'll watch the rest of your video later. I got partway through the Suikoden V part and stopped to go play the game again. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you, appreciate it! Yeah, Suikoden III is a hard one to rank. It's got so many great things about it, but it also has so many bad things about it that feel like a step backwards. It definitely had a tough act to follow. It's hard to compete with Suikoden 2.
I was 11yrs old when I played Suikoden 2. It made me cry. Now I am 32 and just recently discovered how to run a PSX emulator on my phone; I played it again and it made me cry for a 2nd time.
This brings back memories from my younger years when I played no other Playstation games for about 3 whole years but only Suikoden 2. Man those were the days. I still do play Suikoden games on PC emulators these days once in a while though.
I remember played suikoden 2 long after I finished the first. The first thing that captured me was the graphics. It was like a jump!! But what captivated me the most is the story of course!! Such a beautiful game.. It made us really we're part of the world.
Glad to see some appreciation for Rhapsodia / Suikoden Tactics. Makes me feel nostalgic and want to play that one again, think I still have the memory card with the Suikoden IV clear data to get the best experience out of it...
Tactics never got the love it deserves. Most people never gave the game a chance because of their dislike of IV. You should definitely give it a replay!
@@CulganValya It was actually my first foray into the Suikoden franchise, picked it up because it had Tactics in the title ... then got V after that. Then went back and played IV for its connection to Tactics, then got around to the rest of the series.
Love your suikoden content! kudos! For me, suikoden 2 is the most memorable one, the first JRPG game I played as a 3rd grader (thanks to my friends that give this as a birthday gift). Even I don't remember how much I finish this game, so addicted hahaha also as a kid, I remember how my cousin or sister friend came and give me a hoax like "do you know gantetsu can 1 punch kill neclord" or "you must do this here, there are secret" haha so nostalgic. But when I got to play suikoden 1 for the first time, I realize this is the best story in the series. Tir, the cursed rune, the story, the plot is really the best for me. So for me sukoden 1,2 and 3 is the best in number. 4 is okay, 5 is okay (have a suikoden 1 and 2 vibe, but somehow feel try so hard the be them IMO). Somehow, deep in my heart I really hope suikoden get another game to finish all the true rune. But, if the game didn't create with much heart like the first 3 . I think its better to let it like this way and be our one most biggest "what if"...
I enjoyed Suikoden 3 the most, but if I look at the series objectively this is definitely the correct order Great vid, love the personal story about Suikoden 1
Suikoden 3 is a fantastic game, I think they just shook up the formula a little too much and changed too many things that people liked about 1 and 2. Thank you. I thought a personal story would better describe my thoughts on the game than some generic babbling we've all heard about the game a 100 times before.
For the most part I really enjoyed 3. The only thing I can't forgive or overlook though is the combat systems. Normal & warfare. The AI couldn't make the combat moments work and magic was mostly a waste of time until end/late game.
Ahh Suikoden..the game that hooked me and transformed me to be a gamer 😅 (just like you did). I played Suiko2 first, I got hooked with the story and game play. After finishing suiko2, I played suiko1 then played suiko2 again 😂. This game made me fall in love JRPG.
Suikoden 1 is my favorite. I remember I was turning I was 16 and we went to Blockbuster every other weekend. I was looking for something to play and idk why I was drawn to pick it up because I never really like the cover art but I liked the screenshots on the back so I got it for the weekend. I remember I fell in love with it immediately! I kept renting it over and over until I the game wouldn't run anymore because I realized the cd had a really deep scratch. I couldn't finish it. My birthday came and my mom gave me $40 as a gift. I got an RF switch and went to look at the clearance bin and lo and behold there it was! I got the RF Switch and Suikoden 1! I was able to finish it and I became such a fan of the series, my brother got in to it too; his fave is Suikoden 2.
I loved your story about Suikoden 1. My dad had a very similar story. Back in ~'96 my dad broke his leg while ice skating. While he was recovering he bought a ps1 and few random games to pass the time, two of which were Suikoden 1 and 2.
Thank you! I thought a personal story about 1 would mean more than simply talking about the game itself. Your dad picked out some wonderful games to pass the time while recovering. Did he ever expand into other series or was it just a thing to pass time during recovery?
I remember buying Suikoden I before buying a memory card for some reason, so I had to play the entire game without turning off the PSX. Good thing it is relatively short.😂
Well, it's not a Suikoden game. But if I did include it on the list, it might just about edge out Suikoden 3 for 4th place. It's a tough call. Suikoden 3 had the better story, but Eiyuden was better in most other areas.
Returning characters are always nice to see. Really helps connect the games together. Is there anywhere you'd like the potential 6th game to take place? We got a little tease about a great power on another continent from Albert Silverbergs ending from Suikoden 3. I'd love to see it take place there to help flesh out the world more
@@CulganValya I like that idea about the continent Albert mentions at the end of Suikoden 3. I'd also like to go to Harmonia, as we hear about it in just about every game, but have only seen snippets of it through cutscenes. I also feel that, if the HD remasters are successful, Konami should go right into Suikoden 6 instead of remastering 3, 4, or 5. As much as I love them (especially 5), they would be far more difficult to remaster in a way to appeal to modern audiences, so I think this would only result in lost momentum coming off the brilliance of the first 2 games.
@@CulganValya Didn't notice your question until now. I honestly, kind of want a Suikoden game set in both Toran and Dunan after a reasonable (not 150 years lol) time lapse, reusing the areas and changing them up. Maybe even retcon some new land to the east or west. Specifically east of Dunan, as it is just speculated that there is nothing but ocean that way and nothing has been established afaik. Could be a Mediterranean sea deal and have another vast empire over that way to rival Harmonia. Just because we've been to them before, doesn't mean they can't do more with them. Toran in particular I feel has a lot left on the table, seeing as only the first game has been there, and the first game was least fleshed out of all the Suikodens. Really I'd take anywhere, though preferably _not_ Harmonia. Not yet at least. :P
Another thing about Suikoden 4, there is a character, I believe her name is Kinnisen or something. She asks to join your party for the final battle with Graham Cray because she has something personal agains the Koolook. She literally stands next to the entrance to the final dungeon. When you bring her, she doesnt do anything unique in the party. You have a good point. Suikoden 4 was great until Obel, and then the final dungeon was also awesome. In between felt rushed, although doing side content and mini games and enjoying locations and the soundtrack made the game feel more complete for me Edit: Frederica, not Kinnisen
Kinnison was an archer in Suikoden 2. I think you mean Elenor Silverberg. Graham Cray was once her aide/apprentice when they worked for the Scarlet Moon Empire. Agreed, it did have a lot of side content, and the minigames were great ways to spend your time. It had a beautiful soundtrack. I hope if they remaster it, they give the story just a little bit more love and care. It has potential to be so much better.
@@CulganValya Frederica. She is the one in Suikoden 4, that stands outside the final dungeon asking to be taken along. But when you take her along, she has no unique dialogue. That's who I meant, not Kinnison
I gave my younger sister my old suikoden games and got her hooked on them. Sisters are blessings aren’t they? And I only knew about it because my best friend at the time (who doesnt even play video games) had a ps1 and randomly had it and we played it together one day. It seems like a game you’re meant to stumble upon isn’t it?
Stumbling upon a game by accident, and the game turning out to be one of the greatest gaming experiences is always a joy! It makes the fun of them so much greater because you don't know what you're getting in to!
Wonder if it was that Dublin game store that's close to Connelly, or the one that used to be under the rail bridge. I found so many gems in the latter but the former I'm still in there once every few months buying some PS1 games. Its still open and somehow thriving
It was a long time ago and I was just a kid at the time so I can't remember what the name of the shop was or the street it was on. But it was on a narrow street, the shop was painted blue, and the shop itself was long and narrow, and it was on the north side of the Liffey. Aside from that, I can't remember anything about it. In the back of my mind I want to say Gamesworld?
As a child, I had no other option to play Suikoden 1,2 and 4 by buying the game in the store because there was no distribution in my country then, plus the country was quite poor and the games were expensive. A decade later I bought every possible title for ps3 in the PS store as a thank-you for the great entertainment. Today I would buy the new part on the day of release. I will order the HD versions for Switch and PC, hoping they will release Suikoden VI.
I hope you had a great time playing them all on the PS3! Have you ever played Suikoden Tactics or Suikoden 5? I'd love for the series to continue too. Suikoden 6 would be my dream game. But for that to happen we'll all have to go out and buy the remasters, we need to show Konami that there's a demand for it.
@@CulganValya Yes, I liked them both very much. I haven't played only Visual Novel and PSP version. Now I play Eiyudden HH. A similar situation to the game from Ds. Shadow of Suikoden created too big expectations. Game is solid but not when compared to Suikoden 1&2
Culgan I say destiny chose You to pick up Suikoden as You were one of the 108 stars ,love your story, mine was I saw a friend playing Suikoden 1 and I fall in love inmediately and brought my own copy the next day, my first RPG and till this day my first love❤
I would be interested to know where you would place Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes, being a spiritual successor to the Suikoden games series, on this list?
It might just edge out Suikoden 3 for 4th place if I'm being honest. Eiyuden Chronicles was great from a gameplay standpoint, and it had some wonderful characters, great soundtrack and some great minigames, but it also had many flaws and archaic design choices. Like needing the boots to run faster, limited inventory without HQ upgrades, poor character balance, poor magic and unite attack balance, but most importantly, the main story was really lacking and didn't draw me in as much as Suikoden games did.
@@CulganValya Thanks for your thoughtful analysis, and your excellent Suikoden content in general. I pre-ordered a PS5 disk copy of both Rising and Hundred Heroes but don't have a PS5 to play them on yet 😅 Suikoden is my all-time favourite series too so I'm really looking forward to the experience, flawed as it may be.
@@MagikMan643 Rising was a lot of fun! I have them both on Steam, and physical copies of each on the Switch. Really looking forward to the Suikoden remaster too. These games were my childhood!
@@CulganValya My next playthrough of Suikoden and Suikoden II will be the remasters. I'm 39 now, and picked up a second-hand copy of Suikoden in a small independent game store in Northern Ireland in summer 1997 for £15. I had already played through Final Fantasy VII so it wasn't my first JRPG experience, but I fell in love with Suikoden instantly in a similar manner to you. Funnily when I lent the game to one of my best friends, who loves Final Fantasy VII, he returned my copy of Suikoden the next day and said it sucked! It's not for everyone I guess, but I'm always delighted to share my appreciation with other fans.
You mentioned that Suikogaiden did a Suikoden 5 reference in the long run.. would you mind telling me which one? I feel like overseeing it in hindsight.
It's the alternate route of chapter 3 in Suikodgaiden Vol 2. The entire chapter revolves around Viki accidentally teleporting Nash, Meg and Millie through time. Past, present and future. One of the teleports takes them to the Deep Twilight Forest Ruins where they meet Lorelai and Killey, which happens before Suikoden V, and is referenced in game when you visit the Deep Twilight Forest ruins when Lorelai talks about the ceiling being collapsed. It's also referenced in Lorelai and Viki's bath scene in V.
@@CulganValya Ah ok, that I was unaware of! Will you do a documentary analysis of the first two Suikoden HD remasters? Like comparison lines of dialogue, actions and what new content has been added?
@@CulganValya I mean just write yourself an irl note and put it next to your PC, so that you know when the time comes. Plus you could do, for example, your Favorite overall Suikoden characters per game including antagonists, based on their appearance, mayhaps their role in the story, how powerful they are etc.. And then go for an “worst“ Suikoden character per title type of video with the same ruleset. Or if you wanna go crazy but detailed: A Suikoden “Favorite & Most disliked Star per game“ type of video. Similiar rules but you pick or rank your Favorite Characters of the say Tenkai Star, Teni Star, Tenan Star, Tenei Star, Tensatsu Star, Tenyu Star, Chizen Star, Chikai Star, Chizoku Star, and so on. That way, besides doing the 108 stars of destiny type of videos you can include antagonists too like say Gorudo, Milich Oppenheimer, Sarah, Snowe, Gizel etc.. That way you can also get to know all the characters more by researching them and analyse what the devs got for them in terms of characterisation, backgroundstory, skill levels and mayhaps find connections that have been hidden away like an intended affection system that was intended for Suikoden 5 due to lack of time which had included Luserina as an ending option instead of being with Lyon, cuz of how much that feature is integrated and how Luserina seems to have been planned for more, similiar to everything relatedto her mother, and towns being “dried out“ in terms of content or accessibility in Suikoden V, esp. in the 2nd half of Suikoden V like with Doraat or the border town where the dragon cavalary is stationed but being for having such big built up, a rather lackluster and feeling unfinished town.
I agree that IV felt rushed, but for what we got I think that it did a very good job and I don't feel disappointed. While the encounter rate was horrible, the battles were quick, it had a great soundtrack and since it is a short game, its problems don't exacerbate. V was solid, but I rate it around the same as IV because I feel both had a lot of issues that held them back like with V the long load times and also having a bad encounter rate as well as some narrative choices that were odd and how the characters develop. In saying that, it does have the best battle system and war battles. I prefer the visuals of IV to V I must say as the camera looks nice and the towns look great. As one individual who I spoke to put it about the colour usage, IV could have used more brightness and V was too bright. I love the original, but I do feel as though its short story also held it back. For me, II is at the top, then III for me is a great game and then I, IV and V are games that with remasters could be great, but as they are are very good games.
While IV was a very rushed game, I enjoyed it for what it was. It helps that it was a short game, so the problems didn't feel as big of an issue as they were. Though I did feel disappointed in the experience. Agrred! IV's soundtrack was beautiful. Interesting that you find IV's visuals better than V's. I know some people who feel the same, though that's definitely the minority opinion. Here's hoping that the whole series eventually gets remastered so that new and old fans alike can experience them once again!
@CulganValya I haven't seen people talk much about the visuals of IV and V in depth. I know that the UI and character models of V are praised, but to me IV has better background visuals and I think that part of what people don't like is the darker colours used more so than the actual characters themselves. I too am disappointed with IV because in it a much better game clearly exists and Konami should not have rushed it, especially when it was a new team. I recently came up with an idea for its battle system. It could have four characters on the field, but have 2 assist characters. Assist characters can be offence mages, healers and archers. They all can impact the battles in different ways and maybe could require a gauge to use them. Combine this with a lower encounter rate and it puts a spin on the 6 party member mechanic. There could even be a front row and back row with the back row being the traditionally medium range attackers.
I think Suikoden 3 has THE BEST basic battle system. I feel like in Suikoden 1,2,4,5 there's not enough challenge, especially if you're not playing the first time and know enemy weaknessess etc. In Suikoden 3 you need to stay alert.
Everyone has their own taste and that's cool! 3 was certainly divisive. Most people who started with Suikoden 1 or 2 seem to prefer the original combat system, while many who started the series with 3 seem to love 3's battle system more. You're right about 1, 2, 4 and 5 not having much of a challenge. They were for the most part a little too easy, with the exception of certain moments you might be unprepared for on a first playthrough. Suikoden 3 did have some challenging battles, it's just a shame it came at the expensive of overhauling battle system.
I played all Suikoden games except for Suikoden Card Stories. My rank is the following: 1) Suikoden II 2) Suikoden I 3) Suikogaiden Vol. 1 and 2 4) Suikoden V 5) Suikoden III 6) Suikoden IV 7) Suikoden Web of Century 8) Suikoden Tierkreis 9) Suikoden Tactics
Suikoden 2 is carried hard by Luca ,because he terrorizing and literally a beast. So when you fight him in the forest and kill him ,no one in this world wouldnt celebrate like winning a lottery. This is what lacking on the others suikoden.Even in Eiyuden with all due respect its such a letdown.Feel rushed ,no super brutal villain and overpowered.Luca Blight portrait and model in that years is so damn good, you can feel the power, fear. So much drama and tragedy on suikoden 2.But 5 is Great who knows if konami maybe on 5-6 years from now will do something beside pachinko like this suikoden 1 and 2 remaster
While I completely agree with the assessment of S4 feeling “incomplete”, I am of the minority opinion that it had fun gameplay, and I liked the 4 party system because it felt like character leveling/abilities went pretty quick. Minus the silly mechanics of traveling the world map by boat and it taking forever to get from one place to another, and the obvious rushed story, it was still a fun game. I won’t argue it’s ranking on this list though lol
Truth be told, I’m biased because Ted is in my top 5 favorite characters and I loved getting to use him for longer than the first hour or two of the game like in S1 😂
We have very similar tastes! I'd have swapped Card Stories and Web (I hated the gameplay/grind of Card Stories, it's the only one in the series I didn't enjoy at all) and would put Tactics above 3. Other than that, completely the same!
I can definitely see the reason for Card Stories going last place. It's definitely not a game for everyone. It's quite niche. But for me, I hated everything about Woven Web. I appreciate the hard work the translators did, but the game itself was awful.
I swap Suikoden 5 and 2 as 5 is the best for me the story pace just perfectly done if there were some parts that i dislike then that would be the brightness of the graphic as i prefer Suikoden 2 calm colors, also out of 5 main games i ranked 3 as a complete dog shit, even with so many flaws 4 has i enjoyed 4 much more than 3 even Suikogaiden was much more fun as i can gets some background story for the characters. my exp with Suikoden kinda similar with yours as i've also got it from a bonus when i bought my PSX and just choosed Suikoden randomly and it was my 2nd RPG after FF7 which makes me love JRPG since then.
Suiko 3 was good, but it had some serious problems that took away from it for me. Specifically the multiple protagonists. I feel the constantly swapping perspectives really disrupted the narrative, and made the game feel less like a Suikoden game more like any other JRPG. Suikoden 5 was fantastic and a true return to form after the misstep of 4, and the diversion of 3.
@planescaped hear me out. 3 pioneered the series into 3d. You could easily say it walked so that 4 and 5 could run. For personally I thought 5 had a tremendous story. But the generic team combos and lack luster rune magics killed a lot of the momentum in combat that 2 and 3 built up. After playing 4, I really wanted to believe that in 5 "everything " would be better and it wasn't. The rune animations sucked. Considering how important of a role these legendary world building objects of power are. In 2 and especially 3, as a player i thought "Oh boy if I'm fortunate enough to gain a rune and level it up I'll be treated to an awesome cinematic attack magic" and I was NOT disappointed. Then came 4 but we all know that's the black sheep so I won't get into that. And 5 didn't do much better. It just multiplied the same tired attacks. Still a great game! But that one thing really irked me.
The owner locked the site around the end of August with only admins allowed to access it. I don't know why she done that, I haven't spoken to her about it.
*Spoilers for Suikoden 3* Props for calling out Luc as one of the best villains in the series! I thought his backstory and motivations were really interesting, and I loved the dynamic between him, Sarah, and Yuber.
Honestly he's one of the better antagonists. His story actually draws you in. While his methods are questionable, you can't help but feel for him and sympathise with him.
I mostly agree with you list although id rank it : 2, 1, 3, 5, 4. Tiercruz i dont even consider a true suikoden game and never finished it. 4 may be even lower on the list of all titles due to the horrid world map. I forced months of my life to finish that game with dissatisfaction. 3, i found the battle system crappy but the story quite engaging compared to 5 or 4.
A funny story about suikoden 2, I first rented it in 99' when it came out but never finished it till 2001. It would refuse to run on my Playstation 1, but ran fine on my ps2 i bought in early 2001. My ps1 would freeze on the first major army battle every time. I was so happy to get finally past the part I was stuck on for 2 years!
For me the first game will remain at the top, but I 100% agree with you on almost everything. But S. Tierkreis, despite the complete different universe, is a solid game, way better than Suikoden IV, which I find offensive to the name Suikoden 😊
A lot of people would put Suikoden I in first, the game has so much charm, and nostalgic pull on us all. I struggled with placing Tierkreis. As a standalone game, I agree that it's a way better game than Suikoden IV. But as a Suikoden game, Tierkreis is lacking the charms of the main series entries. It's a difficult placement.
Woven Web of Centuries is a game when i started it i thought it was bland, but the more i play it, the story becomes more interesting, but i hate fetch quests, i like the relationships mechanic, and the skill acquisition system is good, i think it's actually the name Suikoden is what harmed it the same case in Tierkreis Suikoden 2 became more bland after you defeat Luca Blight Suikoden 1 i have nothing to say, Maryama wanted to make Suikoden 2 as the first game but he made 1 since he wanted to have some experience in developing Suikoden 3 is the best, a talking protagonist in a Suikoden game? just take my money, the story is perfect Suikoden 4, i like the idea of Naval battles but it could've been better Suikoden 5, yeah, cool, there's George Prime so it has a good reason to be good Suikoden Raphsody? i didn't play it Suikogaiden 1 and 2, good story Suikoden 2 card games? bad, really really bad
As a standalone game, I'd rate Tierkreis higher than Suikoden 4, but as a Suikoden game, I'd rank 4 better than Tierkreis. Tierkreis just doesn't really have anything to do with the series. If that makes sense.
@@CulganValya The whole point of Suikoden is the continuity of the shared universe, with characters, settings, themes, and story beats carried between the games. Throwing away all that has been established and setting it in a new unrelated setting akin to Final Fantasy is fundamentally throwing out what makes Suikoden, Suikoden. Might as well name it Waifu Blade: Redemption Rising Resurrection
I can't believe you actually think Thomas is the worst Tenkai. He is the most selfless Tenkai in the series. All of them show no emotion. Thomas was a regular kid who got thrown into a job he didn't want. He wasn't a warrior and he was expected to fail yet he took on the responsibility to fix not only the castle but provide a safe haven for any traders, regardless of their affiliation. To say he is the worst is unbelievable. Lazlo literally could have died and the story could have continued. Riou and Tir even assed their way into their positions. "This letter is for me but here you have it, you're leader now" and "Wow, he fought a captain on his own, lets let him lead the army." Thomas is the absolute best Tenkai star and it ain't even close. Also, Suikoden 5 is overrated. Incredibly boring start, tries too hard to be Suikoden 2. Suikoden 3 is better.
Every Tenkai Star has been selfless. That's not a trait exclusive to Thomas. I hard disagree with just about everything you said. Tir assed his way into his position? Absolute nonsense. Mathiu didn't just reject Odessa's gift for no reason. There was deep meaning behind his rejection. Mathiu understood the pull of the story of having Tir become the new leader. The son of the Empire's greatest general rises up against the oppressive regime. That's a tale told in taverns across the nation. It inspires others to rise up. Sure, there might have been others better qualified to lead based on merit, but Tir was the perfect symbol as a leader. He creates the best story as a leader to inspire others to fight. Mathiu understood this. The same goes for Riou, you think he wanted to lead an army? You think the only reason he got it is because he fought someone? The hopes and dreams of an entire nation were foisted upon him solely due to his fathers connection to the City-States 30 years ago. Because his adoptive father was a war hero years before he was even born, because he bears the same rune as he father did, he gets pressured into leading an army, pressured into standing up and stepping into his fathers shoes. Much like Tir, he was being used as a symbol to rally around because it's a story that gets people talking, it's a story that inspires. He selflessly fought throughout the war for a nation he's not even from, for people that weren't his own, and refused to give up because the hopes of others rested solely on his shoulders. To say either of them assed their way into their positions shows a complete lack of understanding of the story and characters. Suikoden 4's story could not have happened without Lazlo. Lazlo is the only person ever to have mastered the Rune of Punishment. Without him, the rune would be passed around, jumping from host to host like a parasite, causing death and destruction to friend and foe alike. There's no telling who the rune would've jumped in to or when, there's no telling which people would've died or what ships would've been destroyed. Not to mention his mastery of the rune is the only thing that saved the entire fleet from the resulting explosion after the destruction of El-Eal. Without Lazlo, there's no telling what kind of mayhem would've happened in the islands. His mastery of the rune is what ended the cycle of death and destruction the rune was causing in the region. The slow beginning of Suikoden 5 sets the stage for the entire game. The game takes the time to introduce the player to a new continent, new countries, new politics, new histories, and lore of the runes. Suikoden 5 took world building very seriously, and that's one of the biggest highlights of the game. It immerses the player into an entirely new setting. Thomas may have had a fun story with good character development, but as a Tenkai Star? Garbage. He bogged down the whole pace of the game and pulled the player away from the main story. He was a glorified side character masquerading as the main character. There's a reason his chapters were optional. If Thomas was a side character, if he was anyone else other than the Tenkai Star, I'd have absolutely no issues with him. The fact that he's treated as the 'main' character while being a side character is what drags him down. He's a Tenkai Star in name only. Not only do I think he's the worst Tenkai Star, I'd even go as far as saying he's the worst Tenkai Star in the series, including spin-offs.
@@CulganValya Riou and Tir don't want to be leaders, especially Riou. As soon as the war ends, the leave their countries. While not canon, Riou has a story where he can literally run away from the war, which causes the death of one of his general. He doesn't even seem to care when he finds out. Thomas had many opportunities to tell people, "Not my problem", but he doesn't, he helps them. He could have told Hugo and his party to leave. He could have gave in to the Zexen council but he chose to do what was right. He could have not gotten involved in the war but he chose to help. Even when the war was over, he stayed behind to take care of the castle. All while having no True Rune to fall back on. Lazlo is the worst leader, and it's not even close. Lazlo had zero personality and zero need to be there. You reference him using his rune to stop the destruction of El-Eal. Leknaat and Joshua Levenheit did this in Suikoden 1 and I don't see them as Tenkai worthy. If Lino En Kuldes was instead where Lazlo was when he was cursed with the rune, he would have made a much more successful leader. Lazlo is a shell with nothing in it. Saying Thomas is the worst is one of your worst opinions. His chapters might not be the best (I like them) but they set up his character and give back story to his cause. Love your videos though. Please keep them coming!
You can use the holy rune, or Stallion to dash. Luckily the HD remaster will have the ability to run without a rune. Despite it's short length, it was still an incredible game, it left us all wanting more.
Have to humbly disagree. Suikoden 3 was by far the best rpg in the series. Best story, more challenging battle system and hardest game of all 5, loved the trinity system, best opening song and most memorable cast of characters I've ever played in one game thanks to Trinity. I still think about the story now in my late 30s and missed how they don't make games like this anymore.
I do agree that Suikoden 3 has endearing and memorable characters. The only issue about the game is the story. Why? Suikoden stories are supposedly limited to wars of nations, tribes, races and governments which makes it a hit. It should not be another apocalyptic story where the world has to end like other RPGs such as Final Fantasy and Tales series, etc. But unfortunately, Suikoden 3 is trying to shift towards apocalyptic direction, which is a betrayal to its origin. Thus, most fans of the series doesn't sit well with its story. And it is the reason why even after its release, many fans still thinks that Yoshitaka Muriyama (Suikoden main creator) has nothing to do with its story or the game itself. Personally, I would rather rank Suikoden 4 higher to Suikoden 3 storywise.
Suikoden 3 story is the only one of the 5 that tried to be original by creating the Trinity system and tried to create an original battle system that branched away from its predecessors. A story being apocalyptic is not a downfall. Many RPGs have created great stories with apocalyptic story directions. I was genuinely giving your take a fair chance until you said suikoden 4 is better. Now I know you're trolling.
@@dy3531 I think you misunderstood me my friend. I said storywise Suikoden 4 is better than Suikoden 3, but not as a whole game. Suikoden 3 is still better of course. Apocalyptic game is only good for a stand alone title. For example, Final Fantasy VII has different story with FF VIII and FF IX. But it is NOT good for a continuous and progressive story like in Suikoden series, where every title is connected to each other. The events, characters, places and timelines are all collectively connected. I think most Suiko fans would agree when I say that the prequels and sequels of the story progression is what made Suikoden series unique, interesting and far more fascinating than other RPG series.
I remember Suikoden 1 got the orognal disc still well 2 I think i played but sadly don't remember much of it but TRUST ME SUIKODEN 1 & 2 remaster/remake is my most antisipated Xbox Day 1 BUY this year unless Final Fantasy 7 REMAKE INTERGRADE comes to xbox Series X Physicallty then it a TIE and VANDAL HEART 1 & 2 PLAY them PEOPLE if u don't Hate TACTIC RPG's sadly I gave up on PLAYSTATION after psx/ps1Never had one After and I STILL DON'T!
Personally, I really disliked Suikoden Tactics. The art style was weird with everyone looking kind of flat and the NPCs looked absolutely horrifying. I also disliked the whole ruin cannons plot with people turning into monsters, I found it a bit tasteless.
I can definitely see why. The art style certainly wasn't to everyone's taste. I hated how NPC's had no eyes, it gave off a creepy vibe. That was a strange design choice. The rune cannon plot I thought was quite interesting though.
I would actually Switch S3 and S4 gladly, S3 suffers too much of its own pacing and distribution of story, which resulted in a far more exhausting and annoying experience, not to mention the balance choice of the balance system... In the bigger scheme of things, if we're being fair, S4 is a far more honest fully fleshed out and functioning game than S3.
Suikoden 5 was really tough... until after the lake ruins and you get Zweig. Then it becomes braindead easy, and it is unfortunate. Still a great game and second best suiko IMO.
OH nevermind, *I'M* going to roast you. How dare you slander Thomas! You're gonna put FIVE?? above THREE?? Buduc is also one of the best castles. AND 1?? isn't #1? Get outta here. Leave.
@@SailorYen89 Bring on the roasting! Hell yeah I'm putting 5 above 3. I nearly put Tactics and the Gaidens above 3, I was debating it. Thomas is a nice kid, but zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz he's such a boing character. Budehuc is a nice location, but it's an awful castle. I get they were broke at the beginning of the game, but as the war progressed and it became populated and money started flowing in, you're telling me not a single person could straighten a painting? Or clean the cobwebs? Clean up the rubble? Dust the floors? Or even begin to start repairs? 1 can never be #1, it doesn't have Mukumuku!!! I'll never leave, I've got more bad takes on the way!
@@CulganValya Budehuc does get renovated! The walls get fixed, you put up paintings you find, the cobwebs get cleaned. idk when you last played it but it definitely gets super nice by the end! and Thomas is so underrated like imagine your role in destiny is the tenkai star but you're just a normal lad. that's tough! you're not a kid who has a military father or grown up in a dojo. you're just a boy! that's got some merit to it. i'll die on this hill lol
@@SailorYen89 Are you sure it gets renovated? I don't ever remember that happening. The last time I played it was 6 years ago, but I just loaded up an old save from Chapter 4 and the castle is still dilapidated. There's several big holes in the walls of the castle itself, there's crumbling on the wall at the top of the stairs. The entire outer walls surrounding the castle are still falling apart. I definitely see why you like him so much. He's just a normal kid that's thrown into a situation and he's way out of his depth. I think the reason he's so disliked / underrated is because he feels like the tenkai star in name only.. Generally the tenkai star is the main character you play as for the entire game, but Thomas's 2 chapters are optional, and his role as the tenkai star is spread out among him and the three other characters until chapter 4, where you choose which of those three you want to be the main character. The plot centers more around the other characters than him. I think he would've been more appreciated and liked if he wasn't the tenkai star, but rather a different SoD, and he was just some kid with a big countryside manor that offered it up to the player. I'll die on the hill that Hugo is in fact the real tenkai star of Suikoden 3.
@@CulganValya I... thought it did? I remember it being so much nicer at the end but maybe I'm misremembering afterall which is a bit disappointing lol. I love Thomas because I picture like, what if Tir was just a bookish lad instead of someone who'd been trained to fight from a young age. He'd still have been through all the same things he normally would, except he'd have to rely on other people for any combat. Which is essentially how it is for Thomas (aside from waving his lil sword around sometimes). Although if you think about it, the Tenkai's only job in reality is to gather the stars. Or to be "the one the stars gather around" more accurately. Which is exactly what Thomas does with the castle. Doesn't say anywhere they gotta be he front man of anything. (Small side note, I have a request! Can you remember or find out or ask someone something for me. The Dwarf village in S1, the actual village with buildings, is it.. onTOP of a mountain? Underground? In a cave? Do you have any idea what it's actual physical location is? Ty!)
Suikoden 1 holds a very special place in all of our hearts. It's a beautiful game.. I can definitely understand not liking Suikoden 3, it changes too many things.
Seems to be a standard ranking. I couldn't stand Tierkries so much I can't be bothered to spell the name right. Nothing felt like it was Suikoden. I know I played a few hours before quitting. I think Suikoden IV was a victim of it's budget as to my eyes then it seemed cheap. Now Suikoden V surprised me how conflicted I felt about it. I liked parts, liked characters then disliked later, disliked to liked lol! Especially with villains and heroes. The end pissed me off with the aunt (Sialeeds?) betraying you for truly no reason at the end, ruining the last bit of family that made it to the end of a story. I think I played Tactics at the wrong time in life because I despised it for a reason I can't explain.
I can definitely see why you gave up on Tierkreis. It's Suikoden in name only and has nothing to do with the series, and that was a huge turn off and let down for many people. I think it would've been received better if it didn't have the Suikoden name attached. I'm not sure if IV was the victim of a poor budget, or it was just poorly made. It definitely looks the worst of the bunch. Has the least interesting cast of the main series. Has a rushed story. Whatever the cause was, it was underwhelming and a big letdown. V is amazing. I agree with you on the characters, some of them showed growth and others regressed. I went through the same thing where I went form liking them to disliking them and disliking to liking. As for Sialeeds betrayal, it wasn't exactly for no reason. She wanted the nation to be rid of the corrupt, power hungry noble elite who were rotting the country from the inside. She couldn't kill them while with the prince or it would sully his name, so she fakes swapping sides to undermine the Godwins from within, kills Lord Barrows, this way it tarnishes the Godwins name and not the royal family. They definitely needed to do a better job explaining it though. Tactics certainly isn't to everyone's taste. The art style can be very offputting for some. The change in genre put others off. Being a follow up to a game people hated put even more off. I think it changed to much that most felt the same as you did. They just hated it.
@@CulganValya I think Tactics was just at the wrong time for me as I like Tactics games. Maybe one day I'll look back into it. V was better in graphics than IV, but it still was bland in ways. I definitely think budget was an issue as Konami pinches anything not Metal Gear Solid. All the Castlevania had limited budgets, so a JRPG wasn't going to get a lot of attention either. Sialeeds could have manipulated (whatever her former fiancee's name was), trick them into compromising themselves by exposed their actions. That could have been planned way early in the plot if her goal and let the Prince know same time. Just killing the Burrows wouldn't solve anything, that's just silencing one powerful noble family to another perspective. There was also the fact she still did have feelings for whats-his-name. The problem was she felt she HAD to have the Prince kill her, knowing he and the Princess only had her left for family. He has to live with that, and if got real, known it was completely avoidable. It came off as an impulsive decision on her part think only in the immediate. I liked the game a lot, definitely an improvement over IV (which I still liked). I will say I liked the Princess by the scene she asks the Prince to stay with her. She became the cute little sister for that moment instead of that divide of roles. I barely liked her up to that point, but was happy to find my expectations turned around with that writing. We still have yet to go to Harmonia lol! That place is like heaven in a since as you hear about it, it's grandeur, but never see it. I wish they'd sell the IP, or at the least, some AA studio wants to take the title to make. They let Castlevania be butchered by Netflix

Suikoden 2 greatest jrpg of all time, you just earned yourself a sub
Appreciate it!
dude your suikoden 1 story made me misty eyed. it reminds me so much of discovering the series myself as a 9 or 10 year old. your ranking of 5 also is making me consider replaying it.
Hi Max
@@SemtexJack hi jack lol havent seen u in a bit how ya been?
I can see why it's your #1. It's an incredible game. I really hope the remaster fixes the UI and inventory. Give me Suikoden 1 with Suikoden 2's UI and inventory system. Thanks! I thought personal stories would make for a better video that just blabbing about the games. I tried to sprinkle some in where I could.
@@CulganValya yea i mean honestly for a remaster better ui and inventory management would make it really good from what i saw in the trailer they did add running animation to Tir instead of just fast walking LOL
yea honestly listening about your history of the game was heartwarming in a sense its a good way to express why you feel the way you do about it.
Next year when playing the HD Remaster, you'll cry for a third time 🙂
This brings back memories from my younger years when I played no other Playstation games for about 3 whole years but only Suikoden 2.
Your story on Suikoden 1 is worth subscribing to alone. Cheers
I enjoyed Suikoden 3 the most, but if I look at the series objectively this is definitely the correct order
Great vid, love the personal story about Suikoden 1
I love your story about how you found Suikoden--it was destiny!
It seems a few others had similar experiences where they just lucked upon the game by chance and got hooked. It really is a magical series.
@@CulganValya Not on the ps1. He ended up more of a pc guy. Diablo, Warcraft and Quake were his things.
I remember buying Suikoden I before buying a memory card for some reason, so I had to play the entire game without turning off the PSX. Good thing it is relatively short.😂
Wished you had included Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes in this list.
Well, it's not a Suikoden game. But if I did include it on the list, it might just about edge out Suikoden 3 for 4th place. It's a tough call. Suikoden 3 had the better story, but Eiyuden was better in most other areas.
@@CulganValya Thank you!!!
This list is the correct ranking. :P
And a hypothetical Suikoden 6 really needs to bring back Nash.
Also, would love to see Yuber come back in a hypothetical Suikoden 6. Maybe even with Pesmerga, and we can learn some more about their conflict.
@@Enharmony1625 Definitely! They're two characters that need to have their stories built up. In 3 games we barely got any story about them.
In between felt rushed, although doing side content and mini games and enjoying locations and the soundtrack made the game feel more complete for me
Edit: Frederica, not Kinnisen
Suikoden 1 is the best in the series and has the best soundtrack by FAR. Facts
It's a fantastic game for sure! A couple of my friends also rate it as the best in the series.
2 Is The Best. Then 1.
Rpgs for me are
1 suikoden 1
2legend of dragoon
3 suikoden 2
Lucahjin was the TH-camr what's the one that introduced me to it. And I thank her for it❤.
There's something really magical about Suikoden that draws people in. No other rpg scratches that itch.
@@Evilriku13 That's a really good idea for a video. If I remember, I'll definitely do that! Remind me in 5 months 😀
Have you played its spiritual successor called Eiyuden Chronicles?
I have! I really enjoyed it. It has a lot of problems, but it's a great game.
I agree with that criticism of suikoden 4
I think it's common criticism of 4 that many people have. It wasn't bad, it just felt rushed and incomplete.
1 and 2 4) Suikoden V 5) Suikoden III 6) Suikoden IV
7) Suikoden Web of Century 8) Suikoden Tierkreis 9) Suikoden Tactics
Nothing beat the both 2D version.
Number 5 to me is best game of the series and one of the best RPG there is
Suikoden 5 is an incredible game! I love it.
Suikoden 5 was great, I honestly kind of love Lymsleia's character.
I agree the best jrpg suikoden 2, played it atleast once every year hahaha
Ranking Suikoden 5 over 3 is wild to me
Someone ranking 3 over 5 would be wild to me.
5 is quite beloved by many in the fandom, while 3 was very divisive. You either loved it or hated it.
Just checking Gensopedia after watching your video and.... is it gone? Seems something happening to the site. Only admin able to access it
The owner locked the site around the end of August with only admins allowed to access it. I don't know why she done that, I haven't spoken to her about it.
You mean, from fing awesome to less awesome (excluding those spin-offs)
The only one I'd say is absolute dog water is Woven Web of the Century. What a bad game that was, just horrible.
Suikoden 1 is my #1
I still believe we will see decent Suikoden 6
I hope we do. I'd love to see new entries in the series.
*Spoilers for Suikoden 3*
Props for calling out Luc as one of the best villains in the series!
Woven Web of Centuries is a game when i started it i thought it was bland, but the more i play it, the story becomes more interesting, but i hate fetch quests, i like the relationships mechanic, and the skill acquisition system is good, i think it's actually the name Suikoden is what harmed it the same case in Tierkreis
Suikoden 2 became more bland after you defeat Luca Blight
Suikoden 1 i have nothing to say, Maryama wanted to make Suikoden 2 as the first game but he made 1 since he wanted to have some experience in developing
Suikoden 3 is the best, a talking protagonist in a Suikoden game? just take my money, the story is perfect
Suikoden 4, i like the idea of Naval battles but it could've been better
Suikoden 5, yeah, cool, there's George Prime so it has a good reason to be good
Suikoden Raphsody? i didn't play it
Suikogaiden 1 and 2, good story
Suikoden 2 card games? bad, really really bad
Hey I pronounced it like you did. Shu-ko-den.
I still think they make a remaster of suikoden 3
Hmmmm is suikoden 4 really better than tierkries
"This letter is for me but here you have it, you're leader now" and "Wow, he fought a captain on his own, lets let him lead the army."
Thomas is the absolute best Tenkai star and it ain't even close.
Please keep them coming!
my only complain in suikoden 1 is... theres no dash/sprint. and was too short.
You can use the holy rune, or Stallion to dash. Luckily the HD remaster will have the ability to run without a rune. Despite it's short length, it was still an incredible game, it left us all wanting more.
@CulganValya i did.. but doesn't look & feel right😅 He's like brisk walking. maybe that's on me because I played suikoden 2 before the first one. 😅
Give a try to play also " Suikoden The Last Hope v8.2 for PS1 there is a different scenario for Odessa ✨🎮

@@CulganValya Did I?! excuse me! 😅
1 should be #1
Tactics being overlooked is so sad. That game was a 4/5.
Suikoden 5 is great but why is it sooooooo easy...?
To be fair, all of the Suikoden games are easy. It's never been a challenging or difficult series.
Suikoden 5 was really tough... until after the lake ruins and you get Zweig.
Then it becomes braindead easy, and it is unfortunate. Still a great game and second best suiko IMO.
Julia is gonna roast you.
OH nevermind, *I'M* going to roast you. How dare you slander Thomas! You're gonna put FIVE?? above THREE?? Buduc is also one of the best castles. AND 1?? isn't #1? Get outta here. Leave.
@@SailorYen89
Bring on the roasting!
Ty!)
The best suikoden today is Eiyuden Chronicles. Great game!
Now that's a controversial take!
Suikoden 1 and 4 hold special places in my heart. 2 is great but I like 1 more.
3 and tierkreis I didnt like.
Edit: also 5 was great too
Suikoden 1 holds a very special place in all of our hearts.
