  • Review of the new adventure motorcycle from Honda, the XL750 Transalp.
I will be discussing this motorcycle in detail as an actual owner, this is not a loaner, test ride, or media bike. We will also go for a little ride on and off road. We will answer the question of, is the Honda XL750 actually an Adventure Motorcycle.

I had my leg and arm snatched off and reattached with lots of titanium parts and a couple of plates in the old skull 💀 from compound fractures… in a street bike crash…. My sons would carry Me to My other motorcycle while I was still in casts and sit Me on it so I could ride it in the parking lot to get Me back to riding 😊

I love the clutch release way out at the end of the lever, makes for instant access to perform clutch work and minimizes the amount of finger movement needed to get the job done. The low exhaust pipe/muffler, udder oil pan and 90/10 street tires point to the street/fire road intentions of Honda's design. I think they hit the bullseye with an overall package that suits the needs of a big chunk of adventure bike consumers. Thanks for the nice review.

    Great & honest!
The legend is back & ready for the digital era.
Been a long wait over 10 years.
4 version & probably the best one yet but not perfect.
Am from Scandinavia & drive mostly in arctic climates.
Finally got to test ride this beauty but hard to find as they seem ro fly of before they even hit the showrooms…
    Cons:
    1. Price/cost here in tax hell.
    2. Too naked out of the box.
    3. All needed accessories adds major to the final price.
    4. No Wingbadge.
    5. No air temprature indicator (a must in arctic climates)
    6. No indicator for km range to empty.
    7. No easy adjustable suspension.
    8. No adjustable windscreen.
    9. No adjustable front fender.
    10. Major issue: Airfilter under the tank… What About accessibilty to spark plugs ?
    11. Welded Subframe.
    12. Sump lump….need a bashplate asap… first curb disaster…
    13. No CC.
    14. No tubeless.
    15. Muffler way too low.
    16. No suspended gear & break levers.
Small issues?? however many Small issues leads to major ones…
    Half hearted ?

They do seem like a good value for the money. While watching your video, at the beginning, I thought SE US, loblolly pines and all. Then when you went up that fireroad and saw the garbage dumped, I thought... must be southern Mississippi. ;-) Then when you crossed Hwy 49 I thought... south of Hattiesburg. I caught a street sign, Tradition Parkway, and found out you were not far from the coast. I grew up over in Pass Christian so recognized the terrain and vegetation. I also lived in a cabin for a while on Black Creek near the little town of Brooklyn south of Hattiesburg. Enjoyed your video, thanks.

It's perfectly fine to give the clutch cable a bit more play to move the biting point of the clutch closer to the handle bar.

Glad to see the review. The value of the low slung muffler is allowing symmetrical bags/cases vs one that is tiny because of the big, high muffler. I am a bit baffled by Honda's road biased orientation of some features and choice of using inner tubes in the tires which is clearly a nod toward off-road use.

    • @chrishart8548
      @chrishart8548 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

The muffler being high enough and having bags or cases is always going to be a tricky one. Under would hamper suspension travel and under engine would reduce ground clearance. I still don't like the exhaust low on an of road bike

    • @MishMashMoto
      @MishMashMoto 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The spoke wheels and tubed tires was probably more budget minded IMO. I like the lower exhaust for the extra baggage space on the right side for my personal needs. I imagine there should be options for a high pipe exhaust very soon. The bike seams like it will be a winner in Honda’s lineup.

They are both great bikes but if you do a lot of motorway/highway riding the AT would edge it, but for slower riding through English country roads and in town the TA is way better.

Was looking big time for the Translap but when you've tried the Triumph Tiger 900 gt pro, unfortunatly my heart cannot be back with Honda (No cruise control and and suspension adjustment are like from man cave age 🙂) Even If I compare apples with apples, the de-tune version of Tiger (850), Tiger shown a better design, better rear suspension adjustement. Have to admit, Honda have a better dealer network and long term reliability

The solution to that hurly-jerky cable clutch is Honda’s DCT, but sadly it’s not an option for the Transalp. However, there’s news on Honda’s-soon-to-be-released e-Clutch technology that can be fitted to any bike with a cable clutch and having shift lever linkages.
But personally i think DCT is the jam and nothing else compares. I daily commute my NM4 (gen 2 DCT logic) and don’t miss clutching and shifting and clutching and shifting and clutching ad nauseam. I just focus on my ride and the logic ensures I’m in the correct gear, there’s no possibility of stalling, no possibility of popping a wheelie unexpectedly (or intentionally), and helps to return impressive mpg numbers. Additionally, according to the forums, riders with DCT are reporting 50K miles before a clutch change is needed and that is unheard of on common manual bikes.
The only problem with DCT’s is Honda’s engineers (or accountants?) religated the rear brake actuation to be eternally condemned to the right foot lever! Instead of putting both brakes under both hands, like scooters and bicycles have, Honda decided to retain the foot pedal, and this feels unnatural if not unsafe! Particularly for off-road models such as the Africa Twin, whereby if a rider dismounts on a steep incline on the right-side it becomes impossible to apply the rear brake to prevent it from rolling backwards. However, there are many DCT owners who correct Honda’s oversight by sourcing a left hand brake from Honda scooters (X-ADV, Silverwing, Forza, etc), relocating the parking brake (if one exists near the left grip), running one or two brake lines, and ride happily ever after.
It’s too bad that the long anticipated US model of the Transalp does not offer a DCT option even though the engine is probably the same as the X-ADV 750 which is also kept away from US.
The current models with the DCT are much more refined and dialed-in using 6-axis gyromometers and Honda released a Transalp DCT it would have shut the door on the competition.

The seat comfort is a huge bummer considering they specifically put on the features and marketing page that this seat is supposed to be very comfortable. I just wish for once in history a company would make a sub 30k bike you don't have to immediately go out and spend $300 on a seat. Tire choice is a bummer too, I wouldn't trust those on mud for one second! I really wish they would have the option to add cruise control as well, or just bump the msrp $500 and have it standard. It looks like regardless of make and model you have to get into the 12-15k price range to get cruise control. I wanted to love this bike but for a couple grand more I'd rather get a Norden 901.

Great review~ the biggest deal killer for me on any bike is it's tendency to throw heat onto the riders legs. It's amazing that after all these decades there are still plenty of 2023 motorcycles that have this problem~ including the new Suzuki Vstrom 800. I live in Las Vegas & it's darned hot here for 6 months out of the year & going stoplight to stoplight on a hot bike is miserable. I am going to buy this motorcycle for what I am hearing has perfect heat management. Please give a section to a bikes effective or ineffective heat management when you do a bike review. Most reviewers just don't do this~ they will say something like 'it's throws heat, but it's a Ducati so you have to expect that' ~ as if it's no big deal. I'm brand new to your channel, so you may be giving heat ratings already. I'm also considering the Africa Twin~ especially if they put a supercharger on it in 2024. When you made that remark about it being "The Ridgeline of adventure bikes", that was like a kick in the gut. unfortunately I'm afraid you may be right. so first question, what is a quick shifter? I know the Atwin has some kind of paddle shifter thing on the DCT, is it something like that? I first saw a couple of days ago that this bike has come out and when I heard 459 lb. wet and 83 hp, that is about 90% of what I;m looking for. I've never had a new bike and if I go out and get one now, it will probably be my last one. Been riding about 60 yrs. now and actually enjoying it more than before. Now that I no longer have to work and have enough $'s to pull a wad out of my pocket and buy something new I may just do it. Watched a couple of other reviews, and went to the honda shop to see one and getting more disappointed and depressed with what I'm finding. First thing, I sat on it. I'm 5'11 3/4" , 32 inseam and trying to sling a leg over this thing just to get on it is way too tall. don't know why it is the rear seat and rack on these new bikes are made to stick up like they do. They should be flat so you can actually carry something on them and not be dragging your foot across them trying to mount up. The real killer for me on all these new bikes is the excessive complicated gadgetry and doo dads. To sum it up, first they need take this bike up to 100 hp and full liter. There's no replacement for displacement. th-cam.com/video/pHb4KH08bZs/w-d-xo.html
Next do away with the display and all that traction control, mode whatever wimpy snowflake horseshit and just have a speedo, tach, water temp, oil temp, and oil pressure guage, one toggle switch to turn ABS front on and off and another for rear or just do away with ABS altogether to save more weight and $'s . Fix that dumass sump just begging to get knocked off. Add something I've never seen on a bike-- Quick change wheels so when you want to change from road to off road you just change tires and wheels for that day. No half measures. th-cam.com/video/YSrvFjT0vmY/w-d-xo.html

Hi Friend! Great channel, great review. I have a question. I plan on purchasing a Transalp but I live in South Africa where anything that isn't literally chained to the ground gets stolen. I was wondering, if I bought a 2m long Abus chain, how would you connect it to the motorcycle for maximum security? Going through the front wheel alone is not enough - and routing the chain around the exhaust pipes out front might invite damage. Do you think, with 2m, it could go through the gap at the rear, around the whole engine, then still have enough slack to connect to a pole or something?

It's confusing how hundreds of people can review the Honda Transalp, spending hours talking about the suspension and oil sump, but never one mention of gear ratios, or comfort at extended 80mph (normal) riding in 6th gear without a proper overdrive transmission. Surely it's geared way, way too low, like every Japanese motorcycle ever.
