I went for a test ride on one today, what a pleasure. typical Transalp does everything well, I currently ride a Transalp 605 and I am seriously considering bankrupting myself to upgrade
Had my first test ride today and a few things struck me. First it’s pretty revvy but a very flexible engine, it can handle being in almost any gear. Not loads of low down grunt and it does have a fair bit of vibration through the grips and pegs. Wind protection is amazing for a 6 foot person, I was too warm with every vent open on jacket and helmet as I was dressed for my naked bike, minimal buffeting too. Seat and pegs etc. very comfortable for an hour. Quick shifter is excellent better than my KTM was and that was good. Finally it’s a fast road bike, proper fast on the road.
@@alastairtheduke It seems that none of the bikes today are NOT setup for a person with long legs. I'm not sure why, but manufacturers are making bikes for people who are 5'6" with short legs now. I've never even thought about the concept of seat height until now with all these reviews talking about how low the seats are on these new bikes. Leg space isn't really a concern anyway, it's really cruise control, the final drive gear ratio, engine vibration, wind protection, and seat comfort that are of prime importance. Leg space is something your body and muscles adapt to right away. Your body gets stronger the more you ride a particular bike, and you don't notice the seating position anymore. But no cruise control makes for horrible discomfort on long drives.
@@DrShmuck I found the suspension very good, not stiff, but can be a little bit bouncy over fast bumpy roads. It is better over potholes than most bikes, partly due to the wire wheels.
Excellent review! Enjoyed your humour. Cruise control, tubeless tyres and a few extras would make this bike perfect for my needs. Heard last night that my Honda dealer in South Africa received their first Transalp. Can't wait to check it out.
The only thing that puts me off this bike is the fact that it has tubed tyres. Two punctures on my africa twin, vowed never again a bike with out tubeless tyres. Interesting to see if they bring out this option like Honda did with the current AT. Until then will stay with my CB500X (22 model) which i think is great all-rounder.
You can quite easily convert those rimms to tubed. there are loads of howto's online. 120 euros for a kit and some elbow grease. I have done this to my motoguzzi v85tt and works well!
As above regarding the conversion kit, or you can put Bike Seal in the tubes. British company, and it works. It doesn't have a two-year life, either. Lasts as long as it takes you to wear the tyre out.
What’s the problem with tubed tyres? I prefer them as it is relatively straightforward to put a new tube in. I’m in Australia and tubed tyres are a safer option for a remote area repair. Especially if you cut a sidewall. You can patch the sidewall and replace the tube. I had a flat on my DR650 20 km’s from the NT border along the Great Central Road. It was reasonably quick to wack in a new tube. So from my perspective a tubed tyre is preferred for remote area travel. Here in Australia I think it’s a good idea to know how to fit your own tyres on an adventure bike. So when confronted with a flat, you have the confidence to do the repair when you are out in the middle of nowhere.
Yes, you can turn the traction control off completely, you put it in user mode and hold the joy stick to the left for a couple of seconds. Annoyingly, as soon as you turn the bike off, it puts it back on again. However it’s not much of a flaff to do. 😅
Mate, great review. Best real world one by far, so far. Think you've talked me in to test ride 👍 Looking for something that can rough country lane and some gravel/dirt tracks, but good on normal roads too. This appears to tick those boxes. Cheers 😀👍
I'm looking for the right mid-size ADV, unfortunately, I'm not feeling it for this new TransAlp. It leans far too much toward road riding for the type of ADVing I'm planning to do. Just by looking at it I can tell there are areas that will need serious reworking and attention before its ready for the back country here in the states.
They (Honda) may have slung the exhaust lower so a full sized pannier can be on the left side. Have a look at a KTM Dakar Rally 450 it's exhaust system is slung low as well and that bike is definitely for off road.
Things I didn't like are tubed tires, lack of cruise control and i would prefer a larger touch screen like AT. Tank size is OK for me. I need it narrow to penetrate stationary traffic.
Great bike except I found bit buzzy around 70mph . But yeh very planted ,loads of fun . Great round town . Great on the gravel . Brilliant suspension . Just that vibration at 70mph ,not sure I could handle that .
Buzzy at 70mph. Now you're describing every motorcycle. And it's so stupid. I don't want to be the only person constantly talking about this. You better tell everyone you know NOT to buy the Transalp or any other motorcycle that can't sustain 70mph. How can a bike made in 2023, not have an overdrive? Not having an overdrive is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. Overdrive would remove 99% of the vibration. The vibration is because the engine is revved way higher than necessary, it has absolutely no load on the engine at 70mph, like driving your car in 3rd gear at 70mph. People better start complaining, I'm so sick of people completely ignoring the LACK OF AN OVERDRIVE GEAR on all modern bikes. Even the GS1250 BWM is geared similarly bad, with no overdrive, and the Tuareg, and the Tiger 850, to name a few. NONE are actually made for long distance driving!
People say they LOVE the engine on the Transalp and say it's smooth and amazing. So I'm a bit confused, because others say it has immense vibes at speed. It's really strange and annoying that some riders seem to not even hear or feel the engine on their motorcycle, like they are totally oblivious to their environment and the noises and vibrations around them haha. I swear, we are still living in the past, when people give motorcycles a 10 out of 10 review, without ever mentioning the vibration at 70mph, 80, and 90mph. People cruise at 90 and 95mph on a very regular basis. And it is the people that are to blame here, because the professional motorcycle review channels never complain about gear ratios, they seem to believe that everyone drives in the city.
The Suzuki 800 parallel twin competing with the Translap, also has pretty significant buzzing, to the point that one review basically described it as so powerful that it was intrusive. And I'd bet money that the Suzuki 800 is also geared way too low, and the engine is turning 5,800 rpms at 70mph.
One last thing, and why I am so irritated about this. Because it's the year 2023...... AND..... That's 90 YEARS AGO we had an overdrive 90 years ago!!!?????? AHHHHHHH.

Did Honda say that? I would seriously consider this bike if it had it. A good all arounder that can take me on forest roads and down the freeway with cruise control. And without breaking the bank
@@MrTmax74 I think it just speculation on our part. Honda wouldn't say that yet and risk buyers waiting for the next one. But often after 2 seasons they come out with updates that are very appealing
in the absence of cruise control and tubeless rims, you'd think honda could have at least specced a bike that's likely to see a few slow speeds drops with a folding gear lever and rear brake pedal. Guess they're trying to pare the retail cost down to the max, given the bike's rivals. Should make for a really nice back lane explorer, rather than anything more gnarly. It's still a 200kg+ porker compared to a trail bike, but then again, who wants to load up a 350 enduro with luggage and tour europe? Hope the aftermarket get behind it with a few choice bits (higher level exhaust, decent drop protection, sump guard etc.) Would be great if one of the UK based suspension specialists develop adjustable cartridges and a quality rear shock, although the stock set-up may well be more than adequate for the type of riding the bike will be mostly subjected to. Test ride for me, next week hopefully :) I reckon someone, somewhere, will eventually figure out a hack for turning TC off, if it can't be done already
On your recommendation I bought an NC750DCT two years ago from Dobles. OMG you've done it again. Trouble is I've loaded up the NC for touring making it a £10,750 bike! After fettling the ECU I'm sold on the DCT, just a pity the XL motor is not slotted into the NC, now that would be an ideal tourer. 😉
If you lift the exhaust, you’ll struggle with panniers. This is an adventure tourer, so will likely often feature panniers. I wish it had cruise control, but they needed to draw the line somewhere. I’m keen.
Like all new bikes, wait a year, see what accessories become available...early pictures, the V-Strom 800 is the one, with Hessler and Trail de Couvert are already developing those!
Great review. Bearing in mind you ride the Africa Twin I was wondering if you could share your opinion on what you think might be the better bike for me? I’ve never had an “ Adventure” bike before ( currently ride a Triumph Thruxton 1200r) recently had 4 hrs on a TransAlp and loved it. I’d predominantly use the bike for road use , Sunday rides out with mates, occasional commutes, may possibly do some gravel but nothing more. I prefer the look of the Africa Twin and like the idea of the bigger engine but don’t want to go big just for the sake of it. So the standard Africa twin ( the Adventure Sport is a step too far at the moment) or the Trans alp?
So, just like my 2021 Triumph Tiger 850s, Honda has decided to add a service needed notification that pops up on your display when it needs service. On the Triumph, I had to purchase Dealertool to reset the light myself without taking it in for them to clear it. I do my own service so don't want to take it in to clear that. I am interested in the Honda but was pretty disturbed about the same issue being included on this bike. It's like the Dealers have worked it out with the manufacturer to ensure you take the bike in to them for service. Someone please tell me Honda has made it easy to clear that without some device I have to purchase or take it in.
Good down to earth video, saw this at the mcn festival & surprised myself by liking it, the lines from the side are great, but I think honda were a bit lazy with a very nc750? nose/headlamp. Just my opinion. As you own an AT interesting question for me, would you say the AT is £k's more of a bike than the Transalp for it's starting price? If that makes sense 😉 but i guess the gap gets narrower by the time there's a bash plate/ hand gaurds on it, which you're going to want if you do some big bike trails.
just a thing mate, you can turn off traction control, is the same as X-adv, just hold UP! and enjoy!! in user mode ofcorse i run my xadv 1 year until discover that hahaha
How about size-wise? About the same? I am 6’3” with a 35” inside leg. I have a cb500x but could do with a bit more room, particularly on the leg. Thanks for the great vid!
I’m thinking Honda tried to cover too many bases here, if the bike was designed as an adv styled tourer then it should have had tubliss tyres and cruise control, on the other hand if it was designed as a true adv bike then the exhaust is too low it doesn’t have adjustable suspension and the suspension travel and ground clearance is not good enough. It’s neither one thing or the other to my mind, I’ll be putting my money else where
In my opinion the ground clearance is a little low however its not that much less then a T7. Yeah it doesnt have adjustable suspension but what does for 10k bucks? Its a budget middle weight geared more to the road then offroad. In my opinion you get quite a bit of bike for the money. It will do what 80 percent of adv riders will even do. If your in that top 10 percent of riders then you wouldn’t be looking at this bike anyway. If the had put a better suspension on it then it would probably be 12.5k bucks and people would complain its too much. Its a good platform to make it in to what you want. The ground clearance is still like 8 inches. You get 10.4 inches of clearance on the ktm 790 and that’s basically the best but your gonna pay a lot more.
Great Vid per usual… How does it feel performance wise compared to your AT…. Being 9BHP Down and 30KG lighter? No DCT or cruise control is a bit of a bummer mind..
I really, really want one, sounds great it’s got the XL/transalp looks and it’s somewhere between a big adventure touring and a middleweight? Maybe a super middleweight or lightheavy 10k? Very tempted
Really good video, subscribed! What an absolute beauty of a bike. I am currently waiting for my Hornet to be delivered, and part of me is wondering if I should swap it for this. I actually prefer the looks of the TransAlp to the Hornet, but obv its a very different bike, for a different purpose. I think the white/red/blue livery is swooning me, and I must not be swooned :D
Been looking on the Honda website, no option for a center stand? The packs are a rip off aswell... I don't think it's gonna sell, to compromised off road compared to Tenere and compromised on road with 21/18 instead of 19/17 wheels. If they had just done a CB500x with an 80-90hp engine it would have been better. +1 for the vid.
I think that may be a glitch on the website ... it definitely had center stand option when it was first on the UK Honda website plus there are recent videos on youtube from guys in other countries test riding the bike and it has the center stand fitted.
Agree with MotoGoat, it was there. Checked with my dealer and it is still available, he was aware that it had disappeared. It is selling really well BTW.
It's an 80% on-road machine, why tubes? no cruise, a small screen, no air temperature gauge, and no option for a kickstand 21-inch front wheel should be 19. It will sell but what a missed opportunity to sell many more.
Nice looking machine and sounds pretty sexy! I'd be a bit worried about a rock or log taking the bottom of the sump off where the drain plug is, at 13:38 it looks like it has an extension that's hanging down in the breeze. Horrible design for an ADV bike. Great for draining, not so good for instantly draining! Hopefully a bash plate will cover that up, definitely needed as on pretty much all ADV's. At least the rear peg/exhaust mount is bolted on so could be modded for a different can if needed. Looks pretty comfortable...
Exhaust is the lowest thing under the engine and that sump looks very vulnerable, hopefully Honda will be making a skid / belly pan, Should be standard on an ADV !
a hoofing great big thick metal skid plate belly pan is already available in Hondas options ... and there is at least one aftermarket option out there too.
@@Snide01 The styling is more CB500X because Honda can’t afford to lose sales for the Africa Twin which is considered its flagship bike. Sportbike sales aren’t like the 90s anymore. That’s why their CBR1000RR was a relative dinosaur in its lineup.
@@okinawanah3463 Honda can afford to lose sales on the Africa Twin as long as the Translap off sets it.. They do things out of saving money, it's cheaper than designing a new light. Just use one they already have.. It's a Translap 750, as much as people want to compare to other bikes it simply is what it is..
This was such a disappointment to me (the bike not the video) when they announced it. I love the looks of the africa twin, but a slightly lighter bike like the tenere 700 makes more sense for offroad, i was so hoping on a mini africa twin when i heard honda was making a middleweight adv bike. This one though has looks only a mother could love, if she was drunk. So when i get me an ADV bike, for now the T7 is still on top.
The rims are also a big problem beside the exhaust- they aren’t tubeless. I’d add a topbox and a Center stand. Last Honda XLV750 adventure bike I owned had shaft drive which I thought was brilliant. No messy chains.
Ultimately, it's unacceptable that Honda's Translap, Aprilia's Tuareg, BMW's GS1250, and the Tiger models all suffer from the same lack of an overdrive gear, and are geared too short at highway speeds. Why people are ok with not having an overdrive is one of life's great mysteries. We need to start speaking up about this, and stop putting up with 1970's gear ratios on a 2023 computerized motorcycle. COMPLAIN about the engine buzzing at 70mph. 6th gear should be an OVERDRIVE GEAR! NO EXCEPTIONS.
Tbf I'm 6'2 and I'd still rather a bit lower seat height than something like the AT or T7. Unless you're some kind of off-road legend you stand to gain more from a lower centre of gravity than additional ground clearance.
Nicely done. I wish they'd announce the US release date - at this rate, the Marshall Islands will get them before we do. I know it's fun hearing Americans whine about "not getting stuff", but man, this waiting hurts, it bloody well 'urtz.
The Transalp is an amazing machine. One major red flag stands out to me, after reading the comments here, and on other videos. It's the short gearing. People say it's "buzzy" at 70mph through the bars and foot pegs. Now, this could be people who don't understand giant parallel twins, and their inherent vibration compared to an inline 4 cylinder 600cc sportbike. From what I've learned, a parallel twin can never be as smooth as a 90 degree V-Twin or an inline 4 cylinder of the similar displacement. There are a few reasons for this. But the main reason is that parallel twins don't have a shared crankpin, the crankshaft is much wider than a 90 degree V-Twin engine with it's single crankpin. A 90 degree V-twin is really a completely different engine, it has it's pistons nearly inline with each other, on the same longitudinal axis, because the connecting rods are sharing the same crankpin. A V-twin won't have the rocking vibration to the same degree if at all, because the single crankpin is applying the firing pulses near to the absolute center of the engine.
@@JohnSmith-ef8nr Maybe Suzuki should have put the Katana 12litre tank on,to satisfy the moaners? Can easily shed 30kg by junking the stuff you don't need!
Front light should have been a dual round light setup, this pointy stuff looks like the crappy KTM praying mantis with a hang over thing we all despise...The other major design brain fart is the exposed exhaust routing, OK for a road bike, NFW (No F$%ing way) for an ADV. For the rest, it has potential. Couple of tweaks and some aftermarket stuff and I would accept being seen with her in public. A little disappointed with Honda for a bland release with not much excitement, reliability will not be an issue, it's a Honda but it lacks that little spark we all wanted to see.
Great review, I would by this bike in a twink, but with tubed tyres it is absolutely a NO NO. !!! Should also come with a centre stand, cruise control and a 20 litre tank as standard. Honda get your finger out.

If you lift the exhaust, you’ll struggle with panniers. This is an adventure tourer, so will likely often feature panniers. I wish it had cruise control, but they needed to draw the line somewhere. I’m keen.
What an awesome review still carnt make my my mind up between Africa twin or this translap for my second bike all best mr fish
"Translap"😂
I'd disagree on the muffler ,having it low makes ,for space for decent panniers .
Bike looks good .
Like all new bikes, wait a year, see what accessories become available...early pictures, the V-Strom 800 is the one, with Hessler and Trail de Couvert are already developing those!
Great looking bike, exhaust does need to be higher
It's no off road bike with the exhaust down there.
sc project made a rally one for this bike positioned higher
Brilliant review I’ve just got one 👍
Really nice review, I'd like to see a comparison between the transalp and cfmoto 800mt. Cheers
Well done Honda, you've hit for six, thanks for the review.
Great video Mr Fish. I think that's an awesome looking bike and I love that paint scheme
Thanks
Hey fish, I know you used to have a 500x. Is this a good upgrade from the 500 and do you think it serves the Transalp name well?
It’s a great step up yes , the 500x is fantastic too
How about size-wise?
Hey Honda. Tubes? Again? What is the point?
Had the 600 and the 700 rode many miles to and from work... could this get me back on a bike... We'll see. Nice review, thanks.
Great Vid per usual…
How does it feel performance wise compared to your AT….
Being 9BHP Down and 30KG lighter?
No DCT or cruise control is a bit of a bummer mind..
Must have wanted to give all the sales to aprilia if people wanted cruise control. And also the tubeless tyres every one wants
The africa twin is better all round
@@Mrfish2015 I'm put off by the size and extra weight, not good things in sand and rough trails.
“ you don’t want to get your run over badge “ 😂😂😂 great vid …..really enjoyed it 👏👏
What gloves are you wearing? 🤔
Edit: Found 'em, Richa Street Touring Gortex found at 21:10.
They look better on than in the SBS site.
Awesome vid/review as usual mate! I don't like the look of the front (never liked the 500 version either) but I'm sure it's as honda as honda gets.
It is going to take a lot of sales from the Africa Twin.
Tbf it will also rope in people who wanted something more than a CB500X and aren't into the pocket protector vibes of the NC750X.
Unless people want cruise control, tubeless tyres, or DCT.
As long as they keep the money in Honda they will be happy
Considering Honda isn't shipping ATs to the US in 2023, probably not lol
Hope so, they may then drop the ludicrous price of the AT so I can buy one to replace my Crosstourer. 😊
Can you please send me the location of the dirt road you were on.. I appreciate it thank you.
I really, really want one, sounds great it’s got the XL/transalp looks and it’s somewhere between a big adventure touring and a middleweight? Maybe a super middleweight or lightheavy 10k?
Very tempted
Elle est tellement belle que je viens de la commander et je n'ai pas encore mon permis... You understand my French?
I don’t understand French well , but google translate does 😂
Just one question….. is it right that the dash doesn’t have a temperature display? ( as in the weather temp, not the engine temp)
I have tried to find it without success. There is no Range either for some strange reason.
I heard the gearing is a little longer on the Hornet, maybe that's the reason it feels different.
It would be good to see you on this with hippo on his 660 for a comparison. Like the hornet I love the sound of it ✊🐟
Would you be concerned driving the Transalp with a tubed tyre?
Only I’m the mind .. I’ve had 2 twins and a 250
Rally and never had a puncture but always on the mind
@@blackskunk54 Thanks for the info
It's an 80% on-road machine, why tubes? no cruise, a small screen, no air temperature gauge, and no option for a kickstand 21-inch front wheel should be 19. It will sell but what a missed opportunity to sell many more.
Kickstand (or centrestand) IS an option. Mounting holes briefly visible in Fish's walkaround.
From a review on Bennetts "five levels of traction control (plus off)".
Great stuff, subbed, like to see your opinion on the the vstrom 800.
Cool brilliant review thank 🙇
Amazed that the old Transalps had a high exhaust and the new ones don’t.
they reused the same cb500x can i believe
Does it have a power outlet?
Will DCT be available?
Great review. thanks!!
Love the bike, good video, hate those narrow gutted English roads, the national road toll figures must be thru the roof, good luck to all that use them!
Think this would be my next bike in black. If they made it tubless and added dct then i would be in the dealers
Oh yes that a good looking bike ! And what an engine !
But as far it will be delivered with tube tires I will not pull the trigger
@30:16 rear tyre's tubed
Mi piacerebbe sapere se il motore scalda, grazie.
I had a feeling you would enjoy that one , i tried the hornet and wow what a bike ..
Its almost a shame we have the AT 🤓😁😁
so is it a bigger CB500X or a different version of the NC750X ?? 🤔🤔🤔
neither, it's a Translap 750..
They tried to keep the essence of the old one I think with the looks .. looks better in the flesh I thought
@@Mrfish2015 definitely looks great on the side
Nice machine but 12.5k in Ireland means you wont see too many over here. Shame.
tank you for your review:)
The rims are also a big problem beside the exhaust- they aren’t tubeless. I’d add a topbox and a Center stand. Last Honda XLV750 adventure bike I owned had shaft drive which I thought was brilliant. No messy chains.
Exhaust down low, why ?......
I suspect that's going to be more useable than the big brother.... not that I'd know with my dwarf legs 🤣
Those one lane roads look suicidal. Bike looks great, just needs some upgrades.
The old faithfull vstrom 650 has higher exhaust
pretty much everyone i know calls these Translap, without realising they do it
Is everyone you know dyslexic?
@@Geshmaal it's never come up in conversation
Husqvarna, nobody gets that wrong, but, Translap every time
My dad does the same I think they are trying to make a joke
But very nice bike 😊
It's a cracking bike ,but I am a short arse so I will be ordering a hornet as soon as I am able.
Low muffler and no engine cover is a rather bad idea for off-road driving
Boring
I wonder what the new 800cc Suzuki will be like.
Too heavy for it's size offroad & no cruise for highway
@@stevecoaster2360 I don't use the cruise control on my bike. The Suziki's extra weight will aid stability.
Might as well get the AT if you want a 230kg bike
@@JohnSmith-ef8nr Good point. I don't want any adv bike, though.
@@JohnSmith-ef8nr Maybe Suzuki should have put the Katana 12litre tank on,to satisfy the moaners? Can easily shed 30kg by junking the stuff you don't need!
That sump! What's going on there? Knock that on a rock. Other than that I love it 😍
Front light should have been a dual round light setup, this pointy stuff looks like the crappy KTM praying mantis with a hang over thing we all despise...The other major design brain fart is the exposed exhaust routing, OK for a road bike, NFW (No F$%ing way) for an ADV. For the rest, it has potential. Couple of tweaks and some aftermarket stuff and I would accept being seen with her in public. A little disappointed with Honda for a bland release with not much excitement, reliability will not be an issue, it's a Honda but it lacks that little spark we all wanted to see.
Enjoyable video just subscribed but not keen on looks definitely agree on positioning of exhaust bike looks bland to me as you say, safe
Great review, I would by this bike in a twink, but with tubed tyres it is absolutely a NO NO. !!! Should also come with a centre stand, cruise control and a 20 litre tank as standard. Honda get your finger out.
Not sure what game Honda is playing, nowhere to be found on the US or Canadian websites, it does not exist apparently....
Tubed tyres and no cruise kill it for me.
The Price £8200 well that the price in America and Canada < come on Honda UK pull your socks up
And again, Honda gives the US the middle finger - not available here. Yet anyway.
I think it’s coming
Did you ever figure out how to turn off the tc off . Lol 😂
No
Don't like the look of her. Think the Africa is better and the Triumph looks great. I'd say the handling etc is comparable, they all know how to do that.
Downpipes 🙈
