    Mike, I was struggling today. Ultimately I decided I needed to go back to my basics. When I decided to do that, I came back to this video. Your video solved my issue and reminded me of the fundamentals.
    You are a scholar, and I appreciate you making these resources available for others as well as for me.

    Mike, been watching your videos as I learn how to turn. Can't tell you enough how helpful they are. I was just struggling with making a bowl, watched your video, had a few "ah ha" moments and went back to the lathe to find it much easier with your instruction. thanks a million.

    Thanks for another instructional video. I have only made a few bowls but in your last 2 videos I have learned so much about the importance of the bevel. I used what I learned on a cypress bowl blank. I am like you in that I work crazy hours so I was trying too hard to get my turnings done. This took away from the enjoyment of turning. I now understand what Cap'n Eddie meant by every cut being a practice cut.

    Hello Mike.
    I am a newbie. Been turning about a year. Mostly end grain Boxes and finials. Made all my own Carbide cutters and deep hollowing tools. I just picked up a Henry Taylor 1/2" Bowl Gouge just for finishing cuts. What a beast! Love this thing. Thanks for all the great instructional videos.

    Hi Mike, Edinburgh calling, complete beginner. I have spent about 20 times more watching your (and others) videos than at the lathe (Draper mini) but have learned so much I think, it's just amazing. What I have found is you have to dive in with the new toy (or at least I did) , make a mess of your work (hopefully safely) and then go back to the instructors to see what happened. That's my experience this afternoon with my first attempt at a tiny oak bowl. Catch at the very end threw it off the glue chuck and that's that. There's just so much to take in. Anyway I just wanted to say an enormous thank you for the time and effort you put in to sharing your knowledge but also your focus on beginners as well. Cheers!

    Very informative video.I"ll have to watch it a few more times. The hamster that live's between my ear's falls off the mill and has a seizure or is in the corner with his leg up in the air cleaning his unmentionables. And as i get older i don't get blonde moments i get Gray one's. Next year i think i"ll be able to hide my own easter egg's at this pace. As we all get forgetful ,It was fun watching the bloopers. Thanks for sharing. I love watching your video's. I still chuckle about the cleaning video. Best use of sarcasm I've seen in a while. Very nice Mike, thank you,
    The close up views of gouge grind profile and whilst cutting are excellent, just what we need.
    If I got it correct, while on outside of bowl, pull cutting does not involve riding the bevel, whereas push cutting does require riding the bevel.
    Cheers
    Bill

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Wells Thanks Bill, actually you do ride the bevel on a pull cut, the video possibly doesn't show it that well, it's when shear scraping with the gouge, that you don't ride the bevel, but close the flute right up, and just use the wing, in a scraping cut.
      Hope this clarifies it.
      Cheers

    Thank you again for the details on the bowl gouge. I really do appreciate the way you explain the position of the your body and tool to the bowl and why certain things happen as my end grain roughness because of not rubbing the bevel.... I also have made four goblets from your video on them... I made a 9" tall oak down to a 3" , 1- 1/2" diameter one... thanks again

    Hi Mike thank you very much for taking the time to do these videos, I have just been given a perform ccsl wood lathe and was bought a set of Robert sorby chisels for Christmas, watching your videos have been a god send for me as, I am a keen woodworker but never delved into turning into now. I think it always scared me but now I have had a go its not so scary. I am limited at the moment as I do not have a chuck so I will have to turn a bowl using my faceplate. I have successfully following your videos cut a few spindles with coves and beads. Anyway I am waffling now thank you again and keep up the good work as I enjoy your videos

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi James, I am really pleased to hear that you are enjoying your new found craft, and that I have contributed a little . Once you get a chuck, a whole lot more options open up for you. However, there are some pros that never use a chuck, so they are not essential...but I like them :)
      Cheers

    Great video, informative, detailed and to the points, it does not matter how much I use the bowl gouge, I'm still a little scared of it at times, especially when I use it to hollow (don't have other hollowing tools, for now), but I did just ordered my first 5/8th bowl gouge, to supplement my 3/8th deep fluted bowl gouge which I used so far for just about everything.

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Yuval, enjoy your new Bowl Gouge :). If your not sure of the cut your about to make, turn the work slowly by hand, and present the tool until you get a nice shaving, that will give you an indicator of how to proceed.
