No brother. 2014 roman was making videos on upsc. It was 1st time mrunal and roman were doing it. He was probation officer in my city. He loved study more than job. He was trying to prove a point. 22yr old youngest ias. They made the platform like youtube of education.
Anyone can teach and anyone can watch. You were given points. Later they introduced pay wall.
Then after getting mrunal started netflix type subscription.

Indian Students believes on what is getting rather then what is to be pretended. So Unacademy should focus on product, making R & D better. Unacademy has never really grown, in the traditional sense. Just hiring more people and opening more physical locations isn’t enough. Many young startup founders don’t realize that funding is just a temporary boost to the overall revenue of a startup and make it profitable. Spending money recklessly without a clear plan or growth strategy is just a way to create buzz and serve personal goals. Recently, they spent a whopping ₹12 crores on a pointless show with celebrities. How practical is it to call students to meet movie stars who have no connection to education or career motivation?

Specialization is key in competitive exam coaching. Institutions like Allen and Drishti IAS have achieved remarkable success by focusing exclusively on NEET/JEE and UPSC, respectively. This specialized approach allows for a deeper understanding of exam patterns, thereby enhancing student outcomes. In contrast, platforms like Unacademy and Byju's, with a broader range of offerings, might face challenges in providing the same level of in-depth expertise.

Unacademy is doing same mistake like Byjus. Unacademy started off well with focus on Civil Service prep help for hinterland students with bare minimum resources. But, it started giving oppurtunity to teach for average and below average teachers. Instead it should have hired best Professors in different fields for 50topics of Civil Service Preparation. It should have focussed on Civil Service Prep for 3yrs for graduation level students. A full time 2yrs course for students who had finished their graduation and normal course of 1yr duration for repeaters. A specialised Essay writing course, a specialised Ethics paper prep, Answer writing course and Solving MCQ course for prelims exams. This business model would have definitely helped regular students and working professionals............ But Unacademy got cheap cost tutors from market charging high fee, too many complex courses and deviation from Civil Services towards too many areas where they had very little expertise.... Failed business

Main reason is ED-Tech fail is that ED-tech industry has no potential for growth because how many students from a ED-Tech coaching centre will crack NEET, JEE etc probably 1 out of 100 student or max 10 out of 100 students rest 90% of the students they will leave the coaching and tell others that it's not good and if they are taking repeat they will go to another coaching centre from that situation itself the ed-tech company will lose 80-90 % customers and if the students who couldn't crack the exam tell their relatives and friends that the coaching centre is not good then the company will again lose future customers. Also, it is a business where the retention rate is very low. An ed-tech company will only make money through entrance exams coaching only if at least 85-90% of their users/students clear or crack the exam which is just not going to happen because it will defeat the purpose of entrance exams. Having 1-5 offline coaching centre can make you money but at the end of the day it depends on word-of-mouth and not whether Shah Ruk Khan or any celebrity is endorsing it, parents simply wouldn't care unless they are naive. Thats why other countries don't have a thing like ed-tech companies for entrance exams simply because it just won't make sense. What company has to focus is K-12 in their online section and entrance coaching in their offline centre which should be only in 1-8 location max and sell mock test and papers otherwise the company will perish or have to move to another business.

Maybe but see the success rate in the offline is also the same , students who want to actually study but maybe they are not every level of study even though they want to improve they can't because in the operating system they would be shifted to the lower batches they would not have access to the same faculty, but in the case of online if you are enough if you are bold enough to study by yourself and be practically knowledgeable when the success rate would be high at least for a selection in online coaching and if I am speaking technically real aspirant if you want to crack IIT JEE then I think he would might be able to sacrifice some days for a nice future, and justify cover the expenses of network and set our concentration right then the chances will be higher for a person who is studying distance rather than just marking up in some offline centre which have no facility for an average student who is indeed actually wanting to study. for every 1000 students there are only maximum 2270 students who want to study really hard find even though they are economically poor this education system of online will give them a chance to succeed it will break the boundaries of money they may not be able to get CSE or rank in the IIT Bombay or neet but table for sure at least get a seat in some of the lower end iits or top end NIT that is for sure

Doing education business in India is very tricky. You can find private coaching centres at every corner of the city now. Even tier 2-3 cities are developing the facilities nowadys. Also you can find almost everything on youtube nowadays. Why would someone buy an online course if its available for free on TH-cam!? Even if a student thinks of buying an online course he would buy the one which is the cheapest and offers maximum value. Its good that they are integrating and experimental with technology and building products. Wishing the founders very best for their furure endeavours.

    My tips to Roman:
    1. Decrease focus on coaching and build technology and infrastructure that it can rent / sell to offline institutes.
    2. Buy / build youtube channels like Vsauce and The physics girl in India. For example 'Gareeb scientist'. They are doing actual education , not coaching centers 😂😂😂
    3. The biggest cost for anyone setting up coaching, dance, music, or any kind of training is the initial infrastructure required to rent real estate. This space is typically used only for a limited period each day. Unacademy could build learning centers where they pool spaces at different times for various coaching institutes and also provide office infrastructure. This approach could reduce the risk for all stakeholders, decrease the fee burden on students by at least 30%, and also justify the name 'learning center

But to make monopoly, they bought PrepLadder, WiFi Study etc. This coudn't gave result. There are multiple competitors in this market. Like most of India's startups there is a huge focus on low cost and no profit. India has very little excess cash, so it does not make sense to acquire customers that have no excess cash so they cannot pay for future services. India startups burn a lot investor cash. Uber and Netflix charge 4x in the USA vs what they can charge in India, hence no profit is possible to pay back the burned investor cash

Either you somehow target those 100Mn top richest indians (tier 1 earning salary of about >$13k) and build a business which plateaus at 2000-3000cr or you build some company which every indian needs and is affordable for everyone, something like an FMCG company.

This isn't true for all sectors. Take Food-delivery for eg. Zomato and Swiggy too spent a ton of money on acquiring customers, and now both of them are profitable. Zomato in fact, made 351 Crore Rs in profits last calender year.
So, the trick is to find a sector, where people are fine spending money, and then build a really great company.

@@backstagewithmillionaires food delivery has yet to pay back it's investors so now the incentives are falling away it will be interesting to see if it remains profitable as it has not done well outside the big cities. Amazon and Flipkart are also losing a lot of cash from operations and ola and Uber while both break even, the profit marjins do not justify their investment in India so far. This sector is highly competitive with many new delivery companies coming in and stressing the razor thin profit margins. Both Amazon and Flipkart are not spending big in this sector and they are the global experts, so I would hesitate to say fast delivery is a runaway success. IT has proven to be very successful. Certain segments of manufacturing, textiles, pharma etc are all big winners in India.

After that you have to find New Customers, but in the case of Zomato or Swiggy, if a customer has been added and now they are addicted to its services, they will again buy products from their platform and New Customers adding is additional benefits. Many brilliant educators of neet ug left Unacadamy and only fews are left . Sir Prateek jain(physics ), Amit Gupta (biology) , Ajay Kumar Mishra (chemistry) these teachers are enough for getting a good rank in neet ug. Its very difficulty for Allen to do merger. They are themselves under pressure and doing expansion in other cities is costing them itself. They have expanded Kota too much but now student's arent turning up to Kota bcz of rise of their own local centres and other platforms.
Aakash itself is in peril. Byjus's bad branding is still on their heads.
So only viable option is PW who also same as Unacademy have raised lot of funding and offline expansion. But this exam market is very volatile and true to nonr

As Sanjeev Sanyal once said in a podcast, colleges need not have so many teachers. Lectures can happen online, across states. Physical attendance should be for practicals, networking, problem solving and real life experience. If this model is taken up by Indian colleges, quality education is just a step away. It also makes it easier for institutes, who can then invest in more practical stuff. In the end, the student who has attended online classes and has practical skills will excel. Colleges need not spoon feed students in the name of compulsory 70% attendance.

Ed tech has absolutely no business model, if it's goal was to connect great educators to students across the country then opening physical centres wouldn't be central to the business. If it's goal was to organise the sector, then that was kinda being done already since we already have schools and coaching centers.
Not just that great teachers would always get poached as they have been already in kota, so you can never control price and quality at the same time.
All they are doing is adding packaging to education by adding pointless addons and branding, but absolutely no work is being put in to make education better for more children.
Everyone ends up paying more money in the process and the process, if anyone ever makes any would just end up in the hands of big investors instead of thousands of local educators that have built thier reputation purely through the quality of their teaching methods.

I have been a core user of unacademy subscription since 2020 even took their first offline class
The main problem i have been seeing since then
Is like giving too many options (as teachers) and taking more money
And also spending crores on useless marketing which mostly students never liked
They should have done the product like a batch kind of thing and sell it in lower price the way pw does
But they used to offer multiple teachers at much price
Also as a student it was much complicated because of the multiple options
Also they layed off popular youtube teacher because of last yr youtube controversy
Because of which people are resisting to buy unacademy subscription even at very lower price now
Personally speaking I don't want unacademy to fail or give up

Yea, in Education Industries we have floating users so number of users will not be incremental but number of users will be a constant or slightly increasing depends on youth population of the country. They get new set of users every year... it will not be as profitable as ola or uber. Where they charge tiny amount on daily basis but this is really a good one. Even this is give tough competition to educational institutions having fixed asserts if molded properly as operational cost can be minimized.. If Education is not a good business they why do we have so many institutions.. At this situation the founder can sell his Services like online mock tests alone to offline institute and charger some fee from them.. also he can create a portal allowing guest lecture enquiry.. can try to tie-up with Educational institutions to train their students for competitive exams.. there a lots of way to make it work.. Anyway Educational institutes will keep having students every year so tieing up with institutions will be easier, win-win approach I believe.
