  • Peak Moment 83: Communities Magazine editor Diana Leafe Christian concisely spells out what the successful 10% of intentional communities do: common vision and purpose, fair participatory decision-making, clear agreements in writing, good balance of right and left-brain knowledge, methods of staying accountable to agreements, criteria for new members, good communication and processing skills. She also discusses peak oil effects on the wider community.

    Thanks for responding.
    Communication is the least of my worries. I could teach classes on communication - if I wasn't so easily triggered. However, I am now disabled. I have PTSD. And I have no buying power. So as time goes on, my value lessens and my limitations and needs increase.
    One of the comments here reflects my views alot in that I would need a community where the focus is on people and healing, not on hard physical labor and money.

    Is it just my computer, of do the audio and video get more out of sync as it progresses? But I could care less if the video was fuzzy and turned black every few seconds, because this conversation was of great use to me. Thank you Peakmoment for giving me hours of useful and pleasurable material. This woman's book is just what I was looking for. Excellent, five stars!

    this has provided me with some more info, thankyou.
    It leaves me thinking that we need to find a way to evolve forward to be able to be more inclusive. So many people could be productive, happy and good community members but have found their strenghths to be unvalued, ignored, ridiculed and so on in the mainstream world. These people need support of various kinds, in entering an intentional community ( a successful one with entry criteria), but have enormous potential in what they have to offer.
    I think that this consideration holds the keys to the growth of the intention community 'movement', and that there is now needing to be an emphasis on that growth, somewhere in that movement, but also it probably needs taking up in mainstream politics ( yes, i know....dream on.....but a woman can have dreams, eh?)

    I understand that focus. After two decades of doing a lot of the hard work on our rural off-grid homestead -- it now should be up to younger people to take on the physical load. As is done in traditional societies. But America's philosophy of each man [sic] for himself [sic], we've shredded all of the social nets, safety nets, families, extended families -- where this might more naturally happen. We're going to have to get creative!

    Great info, but funny how they mentioned "cheap gas & oil" at the intro lol. I gotta get this bk. Intentional communities might just be the key to getting this world more peaceful by helping people to heal and grow spiritually.

    Peak Moment apparently was grandfathered in -- we started on TH-cam in 2006 when there wasn't a time limit.

  • @DarkMoonDroid
    @DarkMoonDroid 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's my point exactly.
    The creative solution IS the intentional community.

  • @peakmoment
    @peakmoment  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're right, the sync is off. TH-cam sometimes scrambles the files, especially now that Google Video has bought them out (the problem is rife on Google video). We'll see if we can repost it. Thanks for telling us.

    @peakmoment Hello Janaia, I was wondering if you guys have any shows that are about the process of consensus-decision making in an intiontional community, with maybe a filming of a consensus meeting or something similar to that. I ask because this seems like it could be one of the tricky parts of community-living and it would be good to be exposed to what that process is like before diving into a community lol
    Thanks! : )

    How do you deal with the fact that different people have different needs and abilities? If he can't work outside, but has alot to offer in a "cozy office", why can't that be worked out?

    Loans should be avoided. The reason one of the largest communities is failing, the USA, is due to its debt-based foundation (the Federal Reserve Bank) that overthrew the former economic system. Small communities that want to be an example for larger communities must present their morals and ethics in a practical way that is encouraging for the members and the viewers: The means as well as the end result is important. It may require temporary suffering but the long term goal must be proven.

    Oh, I hope not (less valuable). I think life experience and wisdom can have value in intentional community. But it may mean we have to do some hard work to learn communication skills and change old habits -- as one would find in any committed relationship(s).
    What about finding people you're compatible with and starting your own? It might just be a shared household, but that can be community!
    Also, take a look at Columbia Ecovillage (episode 231) in Portland, OR.

    Based on the writings of James Hansen (NASA) and James Lovelock (The Revenge of Gaia), global climate change is the precipitous increase in atmospheric carbon. The causes are both natural (volcanic eruptions) but primarily human made (burning fossil fuels, deforestation, agriculture, methane from ruminant animals like cows). These changes are more far-reaching and potentially catastrophic to planetary life systems than cyclical heating and cooling.

    @domki366 Consistent views on their video's will expand their basic time limit .. when the video's start to average over a certain number of views they get a bit more time .. What the limits are I have no idea But I have seen this on various pages where views are normally over 5k for each video they produce.

    I have been trying to find an Intentional Community to live in for about... oh.... over 30 years. Every year that passes makes me less valuable and viable as a member. What am I supposed to do? I need this like people need air. Living the disconnected, meaningless, unexamined life is not worth living at all.

    I have 125 acres in the hills of Santa Barbara California surrounded by BLM land....Would anybody be willing to help create a safe place to live, grow food, shelter, I have much knowledge but can't do it alone....Any suggestions from people out there? Any body in LA or San Fransisco with no where to go if the SHTF? We could even go underground.

    • @djtrack16
      @djtrack16 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you really have 125 acres of land in Santa Barbara? Here I come, 6 years late :) With that much land in SB, one would think you'd have ZERO trouble starting (not saying it'll last) an intentional community.
