It's amazing how calmly you describe everything. Usually people on videos scream to get attention but you manage to magnetize by talking so calmly. Great job as always!
Fantastic video man, love how the dedication and atention to fine detail translates into the final product, 10/10. You got yourself a new subscriber pal, keep it up!
Good call on changing the switches. I too, like things to match. Also, I just had to give my Squid Arm Soldering thing a pep talk about his attitude. Great video.
Great video as always. Your care and patience for that beautiful instrument is a fantastic demonstration of your professionalism. And I think it’s inspiring for the DIY community.
I didn’t know you also play. Great luthier, woodworker, and a musician. Thanks for walking through these steps. I’ve ruined one guitar in my life because I didn’t know what I was doing and I was impatient. I had a short scale Honer bass that I converted to a fretless. I used ash to fill in the fret slots. It didn’t look so good. And it turns out that particular bass was worth something and my upgrade changed that. Well, I was 16, so chalk it up as a lesson. I don’t actively play in a group anymore, but I still play for myself and I like collecting bass guitars. I’m working on my woodworking skills so I can eventually build my own guitars. I’ve got to have something to do when I retire, right. Love your channel!🎉
New subscriber here! I’ve been learning guitar for about a year and love it. I’ve only changed strings a few times so this is over my head but I hope to one day be proficient enough to be my own personal tech. Great video and I really enjoyed both the content and the system. Very relaxing and informative!
Soothing brilliant video as ever! Thanks for the tips about going in reverse when drilling through finish, and also for giving me a purpose to keep some of the cutoff strings that lay around.
im a bit late to this video, but i just bought this guitar about a month ago and i couldnt even fit a 74 into the lowest tuner! the locking tuner was fully opened but it absolutely wouldnt fit, and the nut wasnt wide enough either. i wonder why? any suggestions?
The strings I used were thinner where they contact the tuners, to avoid this problem... do your strings do the same? If they do, you can easily and safely drill the post hole bigger to accomodate the smaller part of the string. As far as not fitting through the nut, I'm not sure why mine is different to yours except for one detail. When I received this guitar it was covered in player grime and had a couple of minor dings in it. I'm wondering if it wasn't either floor stock that they sold me at full price, or a model sent out to TH-camrs to demo. Either way there exists the opportunity there for mods to have been made before it was sent to me. Getting your nut cut to suit your preferred strings is a quick job (it should only need mods to the top 1 or 2 strings), and as such should be cheap for a tech in your area to do for you. Good luck!
That’s so crazy because I had the exact same vision for the guitar. I know it wasn’t a spectacular environment but when I saw the stock hardware it really dragged down the appearance.
Hey! This guitar came with 3 allen wrenches but I don't know what size they are? Trying to use them for a setup but I can't know if its right or wrong without the mm of each wrench :( Do you happen to know their sizes?
I think most important thing to upgrade is nut a black tusq would make tuning stability better tho finding perfect fit for 8 string multiscale would be hard also frets could be upgraded to stainless steel but thats even harder so not worth it
The RGDMS8 has locking tuners, and the nut was cut perfectly from the factory, so there is no issue with tuning stability, and no need to change the existing nut. None of my guitars have stainless steel frets, I've never needed them.
Just scored one of these on ebay used for $700. Do you recommend the 10-80 set? Trying to figure out what to use for drop E! considering that or 10-74. Also do you have a specific clip on tuner to recommend that works well?
Wow, they're on the secondhand market already?! Amazing score, I'm jealous... I tune to drop E with the strings I put on it in the video with no problems at all. Unfortunately I bought that clip on tuner off eBay 13 years ago, so I'm not great for a recommendation there, although I'm sure they're all pretty much the same.
@@TempleGuitars I hear you. And I'm not a gold kind of man, but gold on a bass or guitar is a special kind of lovely, and last year I finally added some cheap golden tuners and knobs on my heavily modded and painted old rg8, _and_ my 6 string bass. Maybe one day I'll find golden bridges for both, or individual saddles or something, but for now that's enough upgrading, especially since I just swapped in a $100some Seymour Duncan Pegasus bridge pickup on the guitar 😂 💸💸 and my bass has been stuck in a shop for over a month now for a volume pot swap I should have just tried to do myself.
@@TempleGuitars 😂 indeed, brother. I haven't even run her through my convoluted pedal rig yet for distortion, but the Peggy sounds crazy even clean. And she's LOUD 😅 My only issue is....I haven't really played my 8 without dirt all these years, but all of a sudden, I guess because I did the swap myself with really no help from the wiring diagrams, my attention during the sound test was really sharp, and all of a sudden it seems like the middle switch position sounds way low now 🤔 Each bucker sounds great on its own, but the blend sounds weak in comparison....not that I really ever played the middle position, but still, you want everything to work as it should 😂 I don't know why Seymour didn't add the goofy Ibanez wiring to their list of diagrams because the rg8 bridge isn't connected the sam way. I wonder if the wiring of Ibanez stock vs Seymour is opposite 🤔 I know I soldered the Seymour positive and ground where Ibanez positive and ground were, so it's not a polarity confusion 🤷♂️🤷🏽♂️ I'm also wondering if I uncross the red and white wires that get taped off and left hanging, and actually connect them to the volume pot or something, if that would bring up the middle position volume..... I'm going to research a little more Seymours in Iby ( as an exgirlfriend used to call them 😂 ), but if I don't find the answer, I'll leave it as is, because the bridge position and neck position work just fine. The reduced middle position might offer an interesting hollow effect while playing 😂
Ugh. I feel like all the top techs are honestly retired or passed on. In my area the only guy who was truly a master tech has literally dropped off the face of the earth and I have no idea where to go (really hope he’s ok). I’m almost considering calling sweetwater 😅.

Let's just say I've been highly influenced by all of those loud TH-cam people, and that's why I do it like this! Thank you for watching.
I hope you enjoyed hanging out with me, doing some guitar upgrades!

Much appreciated!
The Bob Ross of the Guitar world is back! Great Video Jay!
I wasn't in the Air Force, but I'll take it!
Nice explanation of everything and beautiful work, thinking of doing a similar project myself :)
The only issue I found difficult was trying to find the right sized washers in gold. HNY!
Good call on changing the switches. I too, like things to match. Also, I just had to give my Squid Arm Soldering thing a pep talk about his attitude. Great video.
Maybe in a future video we can discipline our squid arm thingies!
Amazing! I am getting this guitar in few weeks. Your video encouraged me to also upgrade switches to golden ones
I definitely like mine a lot more after I switched. Have fun with it!
This is the most relaxing 8 string-related video I’ve ever seen.
Haha! Thank you, I appreciate that.
Great video as always. Your care and patience for that beautiful instrument is a fantastic demonstration of your professionalism. And I think it’s inspiring for the DIY community.
Thanks Royce!
Great video. You’re like the Bob Ross of guitar techs.
Bob was way sexier! 😂🏆

Making mistakes is how we learn. That being the case, I must have learned a lot! Thank you for your kind words.
Great video bro, as always! Super tidy!
Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to drop a comment!
Thank you! I was planning on doing this to mine cause my ocd was getting me. Great video, good quality and great voice over! Keep it up!
Thanks for your positivity, Kyle! Comments like yours make all the hard work worth it.
Dude, you're line the Bob Ross of guitars!

Thank you Jay!! Very nice video and I love the style of editing and voice-over. You have a smooth voice. :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
The full gold parts look awesome
Thank you, I definitely like looking at this guitar more now. I'm tossing up whether to swap the pickups for a non covered set as well.
just found this channel
nice quality work and great editing, really great !
Much appreciated! Thank you.
linda guitarra... excelente trabalho... obrigado por compartilhar
Obrigado, amigo.
Awesome video!!
Got one of these on the way and want to do the same thing…can I ask where you got the switches?
Thanks!!
Thank you... I have a couple of great electronics stores near me, but you should have some luck on eBay?
this was therapeutic
Thank you Mohamed... I'm glad you liked it.

its nice that metal heads can have asmr too. id love a mindfulness meditation where im an active humbucker taking in the worlds vibrations
Imagine how low the noise floor would be on that bad boy!
holysmokes this was awesome asmr while waking up
Glad to be of service!

Subbed because of this video.

Just try them. If they're the wrong size they either won't fit, or they will be too small to work.

Tosin's TAM is still a beautiful Ibanez 😍

It definitely sounds like a phase issue with your middle position. That's a very easy thing to diagnose, just swap the wires over. Good luck!
