    I could never get used to 8 string guitars, the tunings are way too low... It's a different instrument at that point.
    This "high A" idea with Drop A is pretty dope though, I think I'm gonna try this. 3 open A strings sounds like a lot of fun.

      Thx Dragisa. You are right: it’s a totally different instrument depending on what 8 string tuning you pick. I am not 100% exclusively only into heavy low tuned 8 string riffing. I am always more into a melodic approach and utilisation of chords. Not saying low 8 string tunings are crap, just not my “cup of tea”. I have no much fun with it. Waiting for the Harley Benton roasted to clear customs. Noticed that it has the same neck dimensions so ... odds are that means it's very much high A compatible :)
    Will see if I can add a fret ... though I'm only planning on bending the b or lower strings and I'm not too sure of finding a capo that could beef it up to standard tuning.
    Edit: It finally arrived, about halfway between G# and A... Slow but steady wins the race.
    Very nice feel and amazing paint when up close (I actually ordered it because of its neck and thought the color was ugly, but man once it arrived I fell in love with it's metal green).
    Also opting for a low A, there seems to be a lot of Jazz literature to help out. Once it's finished stabilizing, I'll be doing the saddle adjustments and then see if it needs a truss rod adjustment as well.
    Ordered some Ernie ball 7 string slinky Cobalt (which have a gage similar to the one described on the 8 string video) and a bunch of D'addario 7s (they come in separate plastic bags so they'll be fresh).
    I did try it when I was at G, and man it sounded really nice. Can't wait for A
    Researching how to add those additional frets... I think this is a very advanced instrument really. So many possibilities. What a great adventure.

      @@ddomusic That's great info, thanks! I've been thinking about the high A for a while. Rusty Cooley had Dean make an 8-string guitar with a 23.5" - 25.5" scale so he could get a high A with minimal snapping issues. Too bad they only made a few. There's one on sale @ Reverb for $4,600(!) reverb.com/item/20742770-signed-dean-rc8-fanned-8-string-rusty-cooley-limited-ed-16-25-2012

    What about the pickups? I can't seem to find much information on the "Array 8" pickups themselves. Are they active or passive? Preamp included? What makes an eight string harder to play? And are there any problems with playing in a tuning slightly higher than the factory tuning?

    • @mr.d.
      @mr.d. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, the “high A” tuning was more difficult to get use to it, than the regular low B and low F# tuning. In general it is easier to switch from a seven string to an 8 string, than from the 6-string to an 8string, in my own experience of course. If you ask me, it all depends on the music style you want to play on an 8-string. The factory tuning on this guitar was half step down. I’ve kept it that way because I like “darker sound”. However all my other 8-string guitars are in the standard tuning, and I have no issues with it.

    • @randomname191

      @@mr.d. thanks, but I already got an 8 string since this comment was fairly old. I haven’t found what tuning I prefer but I started with drop e and got used to it pretty fast. Are you still happy with this guitar after owning it for a while? Either want this or the 7 string fan fret to be my first fan fret. Dont need it just want it. I have a solar 6 string, legator 7 string (it's ok I got lucky and it's perfect besides the cheap tuners and ok pickups) an agile 8 string 28.6 scale with blackouts and a 9 string 30 inch scale with emgs (I want emg 909x eventually maybe switch it to passive lundgren m9s?) All tuned pretty low. I just want to try a fan fret but I heard the trend is dying, in the sense that some guitarists switch to fan frets and switched back to standard frets after a few years bc hated it after so long.

    • @anticarnistvegan
      @anticarnistvegan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are fan frets bad?

    • @AaronMorgan666
      @AaronMorgan666 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anticarnistvegan no. The reason they exist is to make the tension lighter on the high strings while making the tension tighter on the low strings. But if rather have straight (normal) frets.

    • @pattimichellesheaffer103
      @pattimichellesheaffer103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AaronMorgan666 There's also a bit about harmonics - longer thick strings ring truer - that's not just a function of tension, but also string diameter. Longer bass-range strings just *sound* better, apparently. I wonder why some are saying fan frets are going away?

    • @mr.d.
      @mr.d. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am still happy with this guitar after 2 years of playing, especially after I’ve upgraded pickups (Fishman Fluence). The good thing about this guitar is that you can try it out in any bigger Music Store, or you can purchase it on-line with 30 days return policy or something like that - this is what I did, and it was definitely a keeper for me ;-)

  • @DedXyl
    @DedXyl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    so, you have a multiscale, extended range guitar, and you tune to A? Kind of pointless. I have this guitar and it is capable of alot. With a simple change of the heavy strings (I use 9-42 on the 6, then a 60 and 85 bass on the 7th and 8th) this guitar with play in EAEADGBE beautifully. I currently tune a little different at FAEADGBE for what I write. I do like the idea of the 25th fret addition. I can't compare sound because I run mine through A digital preamp interface.

    • @DedXyl
      @DedXyl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Avis & Aiko I had a Schecter C8 Deluxe a few years back, it was ok, it has a slightly longer scale but that's across the whole neck so tension on the DGBE is kinda high. I've never played a Damian 8 but the scale is the same I believe. It was a nice guitar to play and held tone well. I will say the RGMS8 is a nicer guitar to play because of the thinner neck, and more comfortable with the fan fret(imo). With the DGBE at more normal scale on the ibanez, solo work and chord playing takes much less effort than on the Schecter, again imo. If it were my money, I'd buy the Ibanez (which I did lol)
