Seriously though- add an outboard to James’, make Hammond’s more waterproof, and remove Jeremy from Jeremy’s and you’ve got three decent amphibious cars
Jeremy did at least improve on the Toybota when they did the second challenge. He made sure to do a more thorough welding job, added foldable outriggers, smaller engine, and fishing rods. So the improvement for Jeremy's isn't to remove Jeremy. It's just to add outriggers and a slightly less powerful motor. Meanwhile, you take take the power removed from Jeremy's car and add it to James' so it actually moves. Hammond's, yeah, that needs to be more watertight. I was rooting for that one because it did look like the most practical and fun to drive/sail. Unfortunately, it had one major flaw: Hammond
I think the problem with Jeremy's was the massive outboard. He really didn't need something that large, it be like putting something like that on a simple row boat. Of course the buoyancy would be compromised. So get a smaller outboard and Jeremy's would of been pretty much perfect...maybe rework the nose a bit to cut through the water better. Of course Mutt outlined all this before in that almost everything wrong with the Toybota was fixed for the Nissank.
@@MrSilnev how about my estimations for Hammond and May's amphibious boats? James' could use an actual motor and Hammond's could use someone who knows how to make a car float, instead of a plucky Brit from Birmingham who hates actual boats with a passion
@@VCYT Not really. Season 8 (which this episode is from) was aired in 2006. The Toyota F1 car at that time was reported to have 740 hp (552 kW) output at 18000 rpm from its RVX-06 engine.

1) Given how close the water is to pouring into the Toybota I'm amazed it got that far 2) Hamond cracking up at the end always kills me 3) Jeremy almost got killed being crushed by the Toybota and the dock and ever since I noticed it put me off.
@@DavisStevenson I owned the American version of the Lolux. Basically the same thing, without the lifted suspension, in Florida. It was a rust bucket, but it just wouldn't stop running. We moved a palate of roofing shingles (Work truck) that far exceeded it's 1/4 tonne rated capacity, and the wheels scraped the wells in the back at the slightest bump, but then we unloaded it, and it was fine. Not that I let it get carried out to sea at the second strongest tide on the planet, but it did get moved by a hurricane storm-surge. We drained the fluid (Oil, and seawater mix) topped it back off, and got it running again. Not going to try blowing up a building under it, though.
I also had a 1 ton Bronco, with a 300 Straight 6, C6 transmission, 4xlow transfer case, and floor shifter. It would get from 0-to-60 down la bajada hill, in neutral, with a tail wind, but with a good winch, it would climb a wall!
I thought that Jeremy's build was by far the best in terms of utility. He showed some great engineering initiative here, and he would have won easily if he hadn't fitted an oversize motor and unnecessarily tried to finish as fast as possible. The only flaw with his vehicle is the weight of the motor brings the water level periliously high up the side at the back, leaving him vulnerable to any rocking and water finding its way in. He made a good upgrade in the second part fitting buoyancy aids on the side which adds stability.
Perfectly exemplifies their train of thought: James: calm and relaxed Jeremy: POWER! Richard: completely overengineered mess with one critical flaw Also be seen on the camper challenge
Imagine if they collaborated as a team! James constructed a vehicle that stayed afloat, Jeremy with his brilliant idea of attaching a boat motor at a level that would not instantly destroy it, and Richard and his contemporary boat design skills.
The outboard engine salesman makes you wonder why anybody bothers trying to talk Jeremy down from his outrageous demands. Just give it to him. You'd get less fuss, a sizeable lump of cash and a sight to see. Just don't offer a warranty of any kind, they'll exploit it to no end.
Scott Mew It's scripted unfortunately to make Jeremy's demands seem as unreasonable as possible. A 2.3 hp outboard engine is actually only suitable for small inflatable dingys / rowing boats and would propel a small boat for 2-3 people at a jogging pace if that. It wouldn't even move the pickup it's way too heavy and not at all streamlined even with a hull.
That wasn't a salesman. That was a power boating champion and the man that Jeremy brought on to help make the car amphibious. It's thanks to his ideas that the Toybota got as far as it did
