Anyone who claims that Sylvester Stallone can't act needs to watch this movie. Also, "First Blood" is barely even an action movie. It's more of a character study and that's what makes it so great. I love it.
I don't think he cant act. He clearly can. During the first Rocky you could swear he would be the next Brando. It is just so unfortunate that he choose not too so many times.

George Carlin did a piece on the changing use of language, including this topic. Between "shell-shock" and "PTSD" was "Battle Fatigue" and "Operational Exhaustion."
Shell Shock =/= PTSD Shell Shock = TBI (traumatic brain injury), physical brain damage due to repeated concussions (shockwaves from numerous IED blasts, artillery barrages, etc.). PTSD = psychological factor PTSD is usually a result of the disconnect between those who experienced war and those who did not experience it. The greater the disconnect between the war and the civilian populace, the greater the rates of PTSD. If the civilian populace lived the war alongside the soldiers (France in WW2, Ukraine...), you are likely to see lower rates of PTSD as the civilian populace can empathize and understand.
I really liked this one... Rocky III was my best Stallone performance. His performance when Mick died, his beach talk with Adrian, him dealing with Paulie, being a dad, and ultimately his interaction with Apollo were amazing.
Stallone has a very high ceiling and a very low basement, but his ceiling is waaaaaaaay higher than he gets credit for generally. I still love some of his “basement” movies though. Cobra is real hoot.

Stallone nailed the final monologue, gets me every time. I met the actor that played the cop at 9:44 Rambo trips and elbows in the face. The actor said Stallone accidently missed the mark and broke the shit out of his nose. He laughed about it.
Will Teasle was a former soldier in the Korean War. Many Korean veterans had distain and bitterness toward Vietnam vets. At 22:51 left of screen, behind Teasle's desk, you can see his three Korean War medals.
This is the real answer. The book goes into more detail about his hate for nam vets. Korean vets thought their country forgot all about the shit they went through and moved on to the nam war.

RECAP: I watched First Blood last night with friends and family. After the "blowing up the cave" scene, I used your daughter's line. The entire room burst out laughing. My brother shot beer out of his nose, my friend choked on a handful of potato chips, and my father had to change his pants because he dribbled from laughing so hard. We had to pause the DVD for fifteen minutes. Thanks for a great line and a greater memory. Just thought you and your daughter would like to know.
Young Stallone was impressive. After getting rich and famous he became sloppy and made mostly shallow action for youthful audiences, like Lock up, Over the top, Cliffhanger etc total waste of time.
This movie is based on the novel of the same name by David Morell. A bit of subtext about Sheriff Teasle, he was a veteran of the Korean War; AKA The Forgotten War. Enter Rambo, a veteran of a highly publicized war, and a Medal of Honor recipient on top of all that. One might say that Teasle felt he was owed something for serving his country and being ignored for it. It's a meditation on how we as citizens fail our veterans.
The actor who played the deputy who falls out of the helicopter did an impressive job of making you hate him in a short amount of time that's good acting when a character makes you hate them in that short amount of time.
Jack Starrett was also a director as well as an accomplished character actor, a total pro. And yeah, he nailed the character of Galt with comparatively little screen time.
And proof of his range as an actor, he plays Gabby Johnson in Blazing Saddles (The guy on top of the Church proclaiming that the new sheriff is “near”).
Stallone apparently has a overwhelming empathy and love for all the veterans, and he was WELL aware of how the veterans were treated, when they returned.
That definitely hurt cause it actually hurt. Stallone broke his ribs in that scene where he landed on that branch. Buddy Joe Hooker did the initial jump from the cliff to an air bad. Stallone fell down a few branches and thought "It won't be that bad." Well, as someone who has just recently had his ribs busted in the same area, and a month and a half later still not 100% healed, yeah, it hurts like nothing else.
In the novel by David Morrell, Rambo breaks some ribs from that jump, the injured area gets swollen like a red apple, and he suffers from terrible pain for the rest of the story. 😬
31:18 - Will Teasle was a big man in a small town. His own sense of superiority was evident from the outset. If you recall, the first time we hear him speak, he's telling a community member to take a bath. Later on after the rocket launcher scene, he tells one of the 'weekend warriors' they couldn't leave until they'd cleared their mess up... and the guy obeyed him. You'll also recall that Teasle was very upset that his best mate (the other a**hole cop) in the force was dead. They were both cut from the same 'arrogant bully' cloth. Unfortunately for each of them, they pushed a stranger to their bulls**t, who pushed back - hard. They drew first blood.
Stallone's monologue is the art of acting at its highest level. As for as the tension between Rambo and the sherrif that is better explained in the book. The sheriff and the deputy that got killed were Korean War vets and veterans of that era did not think highly of the Vietnam vets because they were the first servicemen to not accomplish the goals given to them (which had nothing to do with them, but in that point in time the complete failure of command hadn't been realized by the public).
Part 2?. Part 2 is the dumbest part I've ever seen. Rambo as the hero who destroys the bad guys who are my Vietnamese and Soviet revolutionaries. But really, who is the bad guy? Who brought troops to invade my country? Who threw twice as many bombs as WW2 on my country?American movies are just plain stupid and false propaganda.
You guys start off every video as the biggest goof balls imaginable, and then, by the end of the movie, have the best, most genuine commentary of any reaction channel I watch.

Yeah I'm glad I got to see Brian Dennehy actually play a good guy just once. My gut feeling is that is much closer to his true personality. Always thought he was such a douche before TB.

The coldest recorded temperature in history for that area is -12 Fahrenheit. That winter the temperature never went below + 25 F with almost no snow. Furthermore, the town of Hope BC is a major transportation junction less than 100 miles west of the City of Vancouver on the Trans Canada Hwy.
I love the Rambo series!!! The last part is pretty awesome and it really explained what MANY veterans felt after when they came back. Their treatment was awful and this was probably one of the few movies that addressed the issue.
This is an incredible film on its own. After the second film he just became another action hero. But this first film meant a lot to those who suffered from ptsd and veterans coming home to people who weren’t so greatful for their service. On another note, please watch Chasing Amy for Valentines Day.

Two underrated and rarely mentioned Stallone 80's movies are Lock Up and Cobra. Cheesy at times but still fun as hell to watch. His car in Cobra is still one of my all-time favorites.

As a Green Beret serving in the US Army 1st Special Forces (Airborne) in Vietnam, John Rambo would've probably been assigned to MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group), a highly classified, multi-service United States special operations unit which conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam War. Martin Sheen's character in Apocalypse Now, Captain Benjamin Willard, was a member of MACV-SOG.

If I'm not mistaken, this was also the sort of unit that David Webb was a part of in Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Identity before he joined the CIA black-ops unit and adopted the alter ego of Jason Bourne.

After watching Rambo maim heavily armed police, the line, "I could have killed them all" was the line that got me, as it showed that even outnumbered and barely armed, he could have massacred them as easily as slicing a bagel...but chose not to.
The "orange stuff" that Delmar Berry's mother referred to was "Agent Orange," a chemical defoliant used as a chemical weapon in Vietnam from 1961 to 1971 as "Operation Ranch Hand," for the purpose of destroying crops used as food supplies for the Viet Cong, as well as destroying heavy foliage that acted as concealment for Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. But the chemical had adverse side effects, as it caused birth defects in Vietnamese children and diseases such as leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and various kinds of cancer in Vietnam veterans after they returned to the U.S.A.

4:30 Back then there was an Army Surplus store in almost every town, selling clothes, boots, tents, canteens, whatever. So lots of hippies wore army clothes . And the popular insult "your mother wears Army shoes" No, the sheriff didn't force him out of town for being a vet, it was for being a vagrant.
The movie is based on a book. The book is so much darker. The book is set in Kentucky which is where I live and that's exactly how a lot of those small town sheriffs act.
In the book during the last scene Trautman kills Rambo during their embrace. Because there was a possibility of a sequel and test audience responses the ending was changed for the movie.

Gents, ya'll need to react to Rambo First Blood part 2. The last scene has the greatest lines of how a Veteran feels you'll ever hear. As a retired Vet myself, it hits me in the feels every time.
The second movie isnt that bad and the 3rd is watchable, the 4th is only a dumb action movie (after a headshot from a cal. 50, the body falls were it stands and doesnt flys serval meters around), the 5th i didnt even bother to watch.
Thank you both for your great review, and respectful words for our Vietnam vets. I grew up in the Army in the 60's, 70's. My father spent 3 tours in Vietnam, and they were treated very unfair upon their return. He was never the same, and unfortunately took his life in 1974 when I was 10. Just subscribed
The last scene with Stallone really hits hard (especially to me as an ex-soldier myself), he nails it. If you want to see him act big hitters like De Niro off the stage watch 'Cop Land' he is stunning in it.
Fun FYI: Stallone insisted on doing his own stunts for this movie. On the cliff dive scene he did break ribs falling into the trees. They had a net to catch him but he did jump into the trees. It delayed filming for a few days.

Brian Dennehy played the part of a big-mouth small-town cop on a power trip to perfection. That one you know 2 seconds into meeting them is going to be a pain in the butt.
Grew up in rural Oklahoma and the worst type of small town cops are like this. The most danger they have faced is a bar fight. The sheriff misjudged the lengths Rambo would go with his broken psyche and war experience.

Yup, hands down that speech was amazing, just seeing him break down like that, WOW. I remember watching this film when I was little and didn’t understand it then watched it later as an Adult and was like Holy Crap 😮 Another one of my Fave films from Stallone is “Over The Top” he was awesome in it too. ❤
For the last part of the movie: what Rambo does in town when he gets there is partly a distraction but also the basic steps to take in order to make life difficult for the opposing troops. 1. disrupt communications (phonelines), 2. Destroy any useful enemy supplies (gun store, gas station, electricity) 3. If unsure of the number and/or location of enemy personnel, execute points 1 and 2 by creating lots of commotion in order to get the enemy force to reveal themselves by reacting to said commotion.
After finding out they're putting Rambo into Mortal Kombat voiced by Sylvester Stallone himself, I had to check these films out and I must say...he really fits in. The ending scene always gets me.
It's very strange how right that game gets Rambo too. Like, not just the character feels right but even his ending and choices feel so in character. Great work in that game. Similar treatment given to RoboCop. Or any of the guest characters really. I'm not even a gamer or like Mortal Kombat that much but they did that great..
One of the most heartbreaking, underrated endings to a movie. As if you didn't already understand what Rambo was going through, he brings it home with that monologue.
To play devil's advocate and defend the sheriff (only at the beginning), he was just trying to keep his town safe. A smelly and dangerous looking guy wearing that jacket (which would upset some people after the war) came strolling into town out of nowhere. So the sheriff decided to avoid trouble and keep the guy moving. I understand his initial decision.
no matter how many times i hear Rambo's monologue, it always makes me get a little choked up. not even a big Stallone fan, but it's one of the greatest scenes ever.
Just so that you can perhaps understand the police chief a little better, he is a Korean War veteran, the forgotten war. He had frustration too from his experience. A dirty, ineffective war with a lot of losses in the trenches and freezing cold, but unappreciated. So I think it's a mix of frustration and envy, mixed with bottled up anger, and he takes it out on this newer guy, sort of, "I didn't complain, drift around dirty and making a nuisance of myself, so how dare you?". Get it?
What they didn’t mention in the movie that they did in the novel is that sheriff Teasle was a veteran of the Korean War. So his personal dislike of Rambo had nothing to do with Rambo being a drifter and wanting something to eat. Korea veterans were basically forgotten about when they came home and it was a war that nobody acknowledged.
I’m really glad these guys reacted like this to First Blood. I was a kid when I saw it back in the day and ‘till today it resonates with me. I still cry.
In the book the Sheriff is a Korean war veteran and is angry that the the Vietnam War over shadowed has military service and Projects that anger at Rambo Edit: in the book it's also implied that the sheriff is suffering with P.T.S.D. and/or Survivors guilt

This is such a good movie. I served for 22 years and ive struggled with ptsd in the past but Rambo is right. You dont turn it off. You watch your brothers back and he watches yours. Its a fight thats never truly over.
As a kid, I had a Rambo Knife -- it had a compass on the handle, also the handle would open up and there was fishing line and a sharpening stone inside.
Sadly when this came out troops weren't treated with the respect and honor that they are these days. Thankfully much has changed since then. Would still love to see more done, especially for some of the homeless vets but it's a far cry from what my dad had to go through. Great reaction as usual.
Found this on the fandom wiki (not word for word) so Teasel apparently is a war vet too but his war is literally. Called the forgotten war (the war with Korea) it was over shadowed by ww2 and Vietnam. So yeah He probably feels wronged or the like I don't know.
That end scene breaks me up every time I see this film, what Rambo goes through in this film is enough to make you pity him... then you find out the full extent of what he's been through in that final scene... it's heartbreaking. It's a shame the sequels sort of change the character into just an action hero, they lost the poignancy this film had. Glad you enjoyed this film guys, keep up the good work.

Actually, what he meant by the way he looked wasn't because "they" were against the war...it was most people were for the war. The sheriff felt he was disrespecting the uniform.
As intense as the last scene was I always pictured him walking with his commander to the police car before the credits roll saying, “I might need to get some rabies shots or something, I got bit by a bunch of rats”
Now you have seen some of the greatest movies. A list can never justify the connection to humanity we all share. Movies like this brings up from inside what we truly are. In total " we need each other".
@OctoKrool One of three movies I refer to people who bash Stallone and say he can not act. It is sad this franchise became just stupid action films. THIS film tackled how we treat vets, how society en mass treated them coming back from NAM and what we in the USA still suck at now in 2023... treated PTSD and Mental Health as REAL. The end scene when you see him break, a super man of masculinity a war hero just break from PTSD was so amazing and made everyone aware how crippling WAR is to the human soul.
One of the better reactions to this movie that I've seen. It's clear that you guys weren't aware of a lot of things that an audience in 1982 would have known going in, (They would have immediately understood the reference to "all that orange stuff", as well as why John wearing that jacket with that flag was "asking for trouble.") but you picked up on it really well. I have to say this about Brian Dennehy (the sheriff), who passed away just a couple of years ago. He was an accomplished character actor, and by all accounts he was an incredibly nice guy, nothing at all like Will Teasle.

Will represents the small town guy who when he was a kid was a bully then he became the star athlete Then he gets a job as a deputy, Works is way up to become the sheriff And he knows everyone in town everyone knows him and he needs that constant respect to make himself feel good he's the big fish in a small pond and he knows it
I highly recommend the original novel, which is far more complex with both Rambo and Teasle having their good and bad qualities and Rambo playing his own role in escalating the initial incident, so that you're never quite sure who you should be rooting for.
So many people remember how great the action scenes are in this movie but Stallone is such a great actor and amazing writer. He doesn't get enough credit for his talent.
This movie made waves back in the day but its had a lasting effect. In the end he gives a masterful scene in which he lets it all out and gives us a look into what Vietnam vets go through. In the book the sheriff was a former Korean war vet who was against the nam war and believed all the stereotypes of the troops coming back. Many came back with drug problems, alcoholism and were quick to be violent. This created a stigma with them. In the book the sheriff looks at nam vets like a dishonor to the uniform.
As a Vietnam Vet widow I just want to thank all the Veterans. And thank you two for all the understanding you gave this movie.

The greater the disconnect between the war and the civilian populace, the greater the rates of PTSD. If the civilian populace lived the war alongside the soldiers (France in WW2, Ukraine...), you are likely to see lower rates of PTSD as the civilian populace can empathize and understand.

I really liked this one... Rocky III was my best Stallone performance. His performance when Mick died, his beach talk with Adrian, him dealing with Paulie, being a dad, and ultimately his interaction with Apollo were amazing.

Stallone nailed the final monologue, gets me every time.
I met the actor that played the cop at 9:44 Rambo trips and elbows in the face. The actor said Stallone accidently missed the mark and broke the shit out of his nose. He laughed about it.

Will Teasle was a former soldier in the Korean War. Many Korean veterans had distain and bitterness toward Vietnam vets.
At 22:51 left of screen, behind Teasle's desk, you can see his three Korean War medals.
This is the real answer. The book goes into more detail about his hate for nam vets. Korean vets thought their country forgot all about the shit they went through and moved on to the nam war.

RECAP: I watched First Blood last night with friends and family. After the "blowing up the cave" scene, I used your daughter's line. The entire room burst out laughing. My brother shot beer out of his nose, my friend choked on a handful of potato chips, and my father had to change his pants because he dribbled from laughing so hard. We had to pause the DVD for fifteen minutes. Thanks for a great line and a greater memory.

Young Stallone was impressive. After getting rich and famous he became sloppy and made mostly shallow action for youthful audiences, like Lock up, Over the top, Cliffhanger etc total waste of time.
This movie is based on the novel of the same name by David Morell. A bit of subtext about Sheriff Teasle, he was a veteran of the Korean War; AKA The Forgotten War. Enter Rambo, a veteran of a highly publicized war, and a Medal of Honor recipient on top of all that. One might say that Teasle felt he was owed something for serving his country and being ignored for it. It's a meditation on how we as citizens fail our veterans.

The actor who played the deputy who falls out of the helicopter did an impressive job of making you hate him in a short amount of time that's good acting when a character makes you hate them in that short amount of time.
Jack Starrett was also a director as well as an accomplished character actor, a total pro. And yeah, he nailed the character of Galt with comparatively little screen time.
And proof of his range as an actor, he plays Gabby Johnson in Blazing Saddles (The guy on top of the Church proclaiming that the new sheriff is “near”).

Stallone apparently has a overwhelming empathy and love for all the veterans, and he was WELL aware of how the veterans were treated, when they returned.
Stallone nails it at the end. Truly an amazing performance.
That definitely hurt cause it actually hurt. Stallone broke his ribs in that scene where he landed on that branch. Buddy Joe Hooker did the initial jump from the cliff to an air bad. Stallone fell down a few branches and thought "It won't be that bad." Well, as someone who has just recently had his ribs busted in the same area, and a month and a half later still not 100% healed, yeah, it hurts like nothing else.
In the novel by David Morrell, Rambo breaks some ribs from that jump, the injured area gets swollen like a red apple, and he suffers from terrible pain for the rest of the story. 😬
"Where is everybody?" is possibly the single saddest line I've ever heard in a movie.
31:18 - Will Teasle was a big man in a small town. His own sense of superiority was evident from the outset. If you recall, the first time we hear him speak, he's telling a community member to take a bath. Later on after the rocket launcher scene, he tells one of the 'weekend warriors' they couldn't leave until they'd cleared their mess up... and the guy obeyed him. You'll also recall that Teasle was very upset that his best mate (the other a**hole cop) in the force was dead. They were both cut from the same 'arrogant bully' cloth. Unfortunately for each of them, they pushed a stranger to their bulls**t, who pushed back - hard. They drew first blood.
Stallone's monologue is the art of acting at its highest level. As for as the tension between Rambo and the sherrif that is better explained in the book. The sheriff and the deputy that got killed were Korean War vets and veterans of that era did not think highly of the Vietnam vets because they were the first servicemen to not accomplish the goals given to them (which had nothing to do with them, but in that point in time the complete failure of command hadn't been realized by the public).
As a kid, I always preferred part 2. But as an adult, damn that ending monologue hit hard.
Part 2?. Part 2 is the dumbest part I've ever seen. Rambo as the hero who destroys the bad guys who are my Vietnamese and Soviet revolutionaries. But really, who is the bad guy? Who brought troops to invade my country? Who threw twice as many bombs as WW2 on my country?American movies are just plain stupid and false propaganda.
You guys start off every video as the biggest goof balls imaginable, and then, by the end of the movie, have the best, most genuine commentary of any reaction channel I watch.

The coldest recorded temperature in history for that area is -12 Fahrenheit. That winter the temperature never went below + 25 F with almost no snow. Furthermore, the town of Hope BC is a major transportation junction less than 100 miles west of the City of Vancouver on the Trans Canada Hwy.
I love the Rambo series!!! The last part is pretty awesome and it really explained what MANY veterans felt after when they came back. Their treatment was awful and this was probably one of the few movies that addressed the issue.
He shouldve gotten an Oscar for the ending monologue alone!

This is an incredible film on its own. After the second film he just became another action hero. But this first film meant a lot to those who suffered from ptsd and veterans coming home to people who weren’t so greatful for their service. On another note, please watch Chasing Amy for Valentines Day.

Two underrated and rarely mentioned Stallone 80's movies are Lock Up and Cobra. Cheesy at times but still fun as hell to watch. His car in Cobra is still one of my all-time favorites.

The first Rembo is not an action flick, it's very serious social commentary about behavior towards veterans at that era. A powerful movie!
As a Green Beret serving in the US Army 1st Special Forces (Airborne) in Vietnam, John Rambo would've probably been assigned to MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group), a highly classified, multi-service United States special operations unit which conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam War. Martin Sheen's character in Apocalypse Now, Captain Benjamin Willard, was a member of MACV-SOG.

If I'm not mistaken, this was also the sort of unit that David Webb was a part of in Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Identity before he joined the CIA black-ops unit and adopted the alter ego of Jason Bourne.

After watching Rambo maim heavily armed police, the line, "I could have killed them all" was the line that got me, as it showed that even outnumbered and barely armed, he could have massacred them as easily as slicing a bagel...but chose not to.
The "orange stuff" that Delmar Berry's mother referred to was "Agent Orange," a chemical defoliant used as a chemical weapon in Vietnam from 1961 to 1971 as "Operation Ranch Hand," for the purpose of destroying crops used as food supplies for the Viet Cong, as well as destroying heavy foliage that acted as concealment for Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. But the chemical had adverse side effects, as it caused birth defects in Vietnamese children and diseases such as leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and various kinds of cancer in Vietnam veterans after they returned to the U.S.A.
My dad developed huge cysts on his arms that had to be surgically removed from exposure to agent orange. He did two tours of Vietnam.

The movie is based on a book. The book is so much darker. The book is set in Kentucky which is where I live and that's exactly how a lot of those small town sheriffs act.

In the book during the last scene Trautman kills Rambo during their embrace. Because there was a possibility of a sequel and test audience responses the ending was changed for the movie.

Gents, ya'll need to react to Rambo First Blood part 2. The last scene has the greatest lines of how a Veteran feels you'll ever hear. As a retired Vet myself, it hits me in the feels every time.

My father spent 3 tours in Vietnam, and they were treated very unfair upon their return. He was never the same, and unfortunately took his life in 1974 when I was 10. Just subscribed
The last scene with Stallone really hits hard (especially to me as an ex-soldier myself), he nails it. If you want to see him act big hitters like De Niro off the stage watch 'Cop Land' he is stunning in it.
This movie is legitimately good; it's actually surprisingly low-key, and also supportive of veterans.
Fun FYI: Stallone insisted on doing his own stunts for this movie. On the cliff dive scene he did break ribs falling into the trees. They had a net to catch him but he did jump into the trees. It delayed filming for a few days.

Brian Dennehy played the part of a big-mouth small-town cop on a power trip to perfection. That one you know 2 seconds into meeting them is going to be a pain in the butt.
Grew up in rural Oklahoma and the worst type of small town cops are like this. The most danger they have faced is a bar fight. The sheriff misjudged the lengths Rambo would go with his broken psyche and war experience.

For the last part of the movie: what Rambo does in town when he gets there is partly a distraction but also the basic steps to take in order to make life difficult for the opposing troops. 1. disrupt communications (phonelines), 2. Destroy any useful enemy supplies (gun store, gas station, electricity) 3. If unsure of the number and/or location of enemy personnel, execute points 1 and 2 by creating lots of commotion in order to get the enemy force to reveal themselves by reacting to said commotion.
Quint's monolog about the USS Indianapolis in the movie "Jaws" is equally epic as Rambo's.

After finding out they're putting Rambo into Mortal Kombat voiced by Sylvester Stallone himself, I had to check these films out and I must say...he really fits in. The ending scene always gets me.
It's very strange how right that game gets Rambo too. Like, not just the character feels right but even his ending and choices feel so in character. Great work in that game. Similar treatment given to RoboCop. Or any of the guest characters really. I'm not even a gamer or like Mortal Kombat that much but they did that great..

One of the most heartbreaking, underrated endings to a movie. As if you didn't already understand what Rambo was going through, he brings it home with that monologue.
To play devil's advocate and defend the sheriff (only at the beginning), he was just trying to keep his town safe. A smelly and dangerous looking guy wearing that jacket (which would upset some people after the war) came strolling into town out of nowhere. So the sheriff decided to avoid trouble and keep the guy moving. I understand his initial decision.
no matter how many times i hear Rambo's monologue, it always makes me get a little choked up. not even a big Stallone fan, but it's one of the greatest scenes ever.
Just so that you can perhaps understand the police chief a little better, he is a Korean War veteran, the forgotten war. He had frustration too from his experience. A dirty, ineffective war with a lot of losses in the trenches and freezing cold, but unappreciated. So I think it's a mix of frustration and envy, mixed with bottled up anger, and he takes it out on this newer guy, sort of, "I didn't complain, drift around dirty and making a nuisance of myself, so how dare you?". Get it?
What they didn’t mention in the movie that they did in the novel is that sheriff Teasle was a veteran of the Korean War. So his personal dislike of Rambo had nothing to do with Rambo being a drifter and wanting something to eat. Korea veterans were basically forgotten about when they came home and it was a war that nobody acknowledged.
I’m really glad these guys reacted like this to First Blood. I was a kid when I saw it back in the day and ‘till today it resonates with me. I still cry.
In the book the Sheriff is a Korean war veteran and is angry that the the Vietnam War over shadowed has military service and Projects that anger at Rambo
Edit: in the book it's also implied that the sheriff is suffering with P.T.S.D. and/or Survivors guilt

My parents took me to see this movie when I was 6. This is where I became a huge fan of Stallone
This is such a good movie. I served for 22 years and ive struggled with ptsd in the past but Rambo is right. You dont turn it off. You watch your brothers back and he watches yours. Its a fight thats never truly over.
As a kid, I had a Rambo Knife -- it had a compass on the handle, also the handle would open up and there was fishing line and a sharpening stone inside.
Still had it, must be worth a lot by now.
Sadly when this came out troops weren't treated with the respect and honor that they are these days. Thankfully much has changed since then. Would still love to see more done, especially for some of the homeless vets but it's a far cry from what my dad had to go through. Great reaction as usual.

That end scene breaks me up every time I see this film, what Rambo goes through in this film is enough to make you pity him... then you find out the full extent of what he's been through in that final scene... it's heartbreaking. It's a shame the sequels sort of change the character into just an action hero, they lost the poignancy this film had. Glad you enjoyed this film guys, keep up the good work.

@OctoKrool One of three movies I refer to people who bash Stallone and say he can not act. It is sad this franchise became just stupid action films. THIS film tackled how we treat vets, how society en mass treated them coming back from NAM and what we in the USA still suck at now in 2023... treated PTSD and Mental Health as REAL. The end scene when you see him break, a super man of masculinity a war hero just break from PTSD was so amazing and made everyone aware how crippling WAR is to the human soul.
Several actual Vietnam vets said the movie taught them how to cry again.

It's clear that you guys weren't aware of a lot of things that an audience in 1982 would have known going in, (They would have immediately understood the reference to "all that orange stuff", as well as why John wearing that jacket with that flag was "asking for trouble.") but you picked up on it really well.
I have to say this about Brian Dennehy (the sheriff), who passed away just a couple of years ago. He was an accomplished character actor, and by all accounts he was an incredibly nice guy, nothing at all like Will Teasle.
I hope you guys watch the sequel, too. It also has an incredible song during the credits. 👍
"FIRST BLOOD" MOVIE TRIVIA
* In the novel 'First Blood' Rambo escapes from the police station completely naked. Within 24 hours, he was clothed and completely armed.
* In the novel, Rambo killed everyone who came across his path. In the film, the confirmed kills tallied, one; and even that, was for the stupidity of the sergeant removing his safety belt in the chopper.
* In the novel, Rambo dies at the hands of Colonel Trautman. Rambo states to the colonel, "You created me. You destroy me."
* David Caruso's first major film role.
* Legend actor, Kirk Douglas was to play Colonel Trautman, but backed out when the film script was written that Rambo was to live.
When Kirk Douglas backed out of the production, actor Richard Krenna received a phone call to play Colonel Trautman. He got the call on a Thursday night, He flew to British Columbia the following day, and was shooting by Monday. Having next to no time to prepare, Krenna admitted he had no idea what he was doing.
* Sylvester Stallone did the second half of the high fall through the trees. He broke three ribs in the process.
* Much of the dialogue was removed to appeal to international audiences. First Blood was a huge hit in Japan.
* Cinematographer Andrew Laszlo lit the beginning of the cave scene with only two matches glued together.
* The movie was changed to have Rambo live as a sign of respect for veterans. It was to show that there can be a life after war.
* Will Teasle was a former soldier in the Korean War. Many Korean veterans had distain and bitterness toward Vietnam vets.
At 22:51 left of screen, behind Teasle's desk, you can see his three Korean War medals.
* The name "Rambo" was floating in the mind of novelist David Morell for quite a while. His wife came home from the store one day with a bag of tasty apples with the most unusual name. He asked what they were called. She said, "They're called 'Rambo Apples.'" Morell decided on the spot that the name 'Rambo' was meant to be for his character.
* 'Rambo' was named after an apple, 'Teasle' was named after a herb, and 'Trautman' was a play on a fisherman.
* Production in the mountains of British Columbia was so cold, that cast and crew wore many layers of thermal clothing to stave off the freezing temperatures. Stallone had jeans and a tank top.
* During the monologue at the end, when Rambo is talking about his friend blown up in front of him, Rambo tears the string of bullets off his body, as if he was removing his friends entrails after the blast.
* Rambo's monologue at the end is considered one of the greatest on-screen monologues of all time.
One of the best series in movie history.
Will represents the small town guy who when he was a kid was a bully then he became the star athlete Then he gets a job as a deputy, Works is way up to become the sheriff And he knows everyone in town everyone knows him and he needs that constant respect to make himself feel good he's the big fish in a small pond and he knows it
I highly recommend the original novel, which is far more complex with both Rambo and Teasle having their good and bad qualities and Rambo playing his own role in escalating the initial incident, so that you're never quite sure who you should be rooting for.

So many people remember how great the action scenes are in this movie but Stallone is such a great actor and amazing writer. He doesn't get enough credit for his talent.
The actor who plays Deputy Mitch is a young David Caruso, who would go on to star in the crime dramas NYPD Blue and CSI: Miami.
...and 'Jade'.
This movie made waves back in the day but its had a lasting effect. In the end he gives a masterful scene in which he lets it all out and gives us a look into what Vietnam vets go through. In the book the sheriff was a former Korean war vet who was against the nam war and believed all the stereotypes of the troops coming back. Many came back with drug problems, alcoholism and were quick to be violent. This created a stigma with them. In the book the sheriff looks at nam vets like a dishonor to the uniform.
I live an hour away from the town they filmed at, actually named hope, everytime I pass thru it I always think of Rambo wrecking it up lol
