As I write this only 89 other comments. This version is amazing, I am a massive fan of Rob and cannot believe it is over 10 years until I heard this version - WOW. Would have loved to have been in the room listening to this, must have been such a great gig.
he said in one of his concerts, though, that it's left up to peoples interpretations, and what they want to use it for, stating after that because people use his song that way, that it has not lost its meaning. To him, it's one of his mother, to another it could be about a relationship. (I'm not trying to argue, I just want to add on)
Rob Thomas and Matchbox Twenty is truly music at its best. Artist on a unreachable level. Best thing is I seen them Live and they sound better than the any Cd.
hes a great singer because he has a great/unique voice.. hes had great songs with the band and on his own and in collaborations. what more do u want him to do?just coz he isnt mainstream doesnt make him great.
Ironically I'm listening at 3am and I understand this song even more because I'm sick at the minute well I'm always sick I'm actually sick of being sick and lonely so yep I get this song so much tonight/this morning.
I think most lead singers aren't great singers when looked at from a point of vocal ability; however, look at Rod Stewart, Don Henley, and Tom Petty as examples. These guys are great because of how unique they sound and because they all have songwriting abilities. Just my view of how these guys are. Great performance.
I was just about to point this out. Actually, from the only performance of this song I love more than the one we're posting on. Him and that piano kill me every time.
@PhysiPhile his mum did not DIE of cancer though, she;s fine now.. But yes, you are right. it's a song about difficult times. Mb20 - my hard times music. Always gets me through.. Thank you, guys for creating a shelter for sorrow.
@PhysiPhile He said he was 12 when his Mom had cancer, but she was okay now.... check out the piano solo version..... he said it could about whatever you want
Absolutely love it. I was listen to Matchbox before Internet is widely available in the country. I like their live performance so much however those day I don't have access to TH-cam or even their latest news. I am lucky still can watch this today and sounds perfect to my ears. Anyone knows when and what this live event name? Appreciate if can share me a link with the full performance play.
This song is about his mother dying of cancer. Which gives it a lot more meaning, "It's all going to end and it might as well be my fault." Means that she might as well vicariously die with every one thinking it's her fault so she can die with their burdens and relieve them of any guilt. Think about that because most people hear the wrong song like one about a girlfriend he had.
you can interpret the song however you want but you can't change the writer's interpretation, and whatever you interpret from it won't change it's meaning either.
@NeringaVis Yeah, I used the word dying - not died - for that specific reason. However, I keep getting messages telling me she didn't die and I am mistaken...arg...
@PhysiPhile You have no idea what you are talking about. He even said in the piano version, that this song is universal and can be used for whatever you want. How can you judge people for having their own interpretation of a song?
@LiveADreamProduction: actually I said dying not DIED. please see the 50 other post of people responding (sometimes with anger) with the same comment. Now I have to turn off all automatic youtube emails from video posts because of the flood of emails I get about this silly confusion between dying and died.
@inatizzy2...I didn't say "not good"...I said "not great". There's a difference, in my opinion. As far as vocalists go, he has a fairly limited range and he's not "technically" all that difficult to emulate. He is, however, a good singer and an even better writer. What he does very well is know his "sound" and his audience. I'm a huge fan of his...but mostly for his writing style. He has a pop sensibility that is rare in current writers.
@rockers357...ok, I'll play the game. You tell me how he IS a "great" singer. Is he a singer who could stand completely on his vocal ability...even if he WASN'T such a great songwriter? I know I don't find anything truly "special" about his singing. He's a great writer and entertainer...and that's plenty enough for me to be a fan...but I don't consider his vocal ability to be his strength. If everyone else around here does...well hey, that's y'all's opinion and I'm fine with that.
@nonSteel Of course? Music like all art is interpretive. Just giving his point of view. I couldn't care less if you want to interpret it a different way...
@Schmoher Judge? WTF are you talking about? I am a musician and totally agree that personal interpretations of art are much more powerful/meaningful than the original. I just thought it was a cool factoid. TH-cam is getting f-ing ridiculous. I've received more messages about that little 10 second post than anything else.
@bdill9892 I know i know...I never said she died. PEOPLE: stop saying I said that I've received over 20 messages from people telling me she didn't die. I said "dying" not died. No more posting on music videos for me cause I guess people must feel the need to reply to EVERYTHING including a stupid little comment on youtube
This was absolutely hands down the best concert I have ever listened to. Wish I was in the audience. Amazing vocals (harmonies) and instruments.
Beautiful !! Real natural voices here. Nothing artificial added !! ❤
In my later years in life, I love when artists do their hit songs unplugged and slowed down like this....
You should look up the piano version. That is 🔥.
Incredible band. Completely Underrated. Pure talent and beautiful skill all around. Best band of the 90's.
They were never underrated. And I guarantee if they were to get back together and tour again...every show would be sold out.
Goo goo dolls and a lot more matchbox good but wasn’t the best band of the 90’s sorry one of the best but not the best
Personally I think the slowed down version is much more emotional than the album version and for that reason this is the better version
They have gotten me through some of the toughest times in my life! ♥️
The best version!

Music is the fountain of love on which I feed on
Best Version.

He wrote it about when his mom was sick going through cancer
putting this on my ipod, it's my new song i'll fall asleep too.
that was somehow a compliment, not an insult :P
Merry Christmas 🎁 2023 listening to this
best version so far
He is "The Voice."
Rob Thomas and Matchbox Twenty is truly music at its best. Artist on a unreachable level. Best thing is I seen them Live and they sound better than the any Cd.

Mb20 - my hard times music. Always gets me through.. Thank you, guys for creating a shelter for sorrow.
thank you very nice
I prefer this to the studio version
You are right, it is about his mother, but, she is alive and well, thankfully.
Nobody better then ROB. 💙
I love this version better than the original version
@PhysiPhile I had no idea. Thanks for sharing.
you realize that if you were a true fan you would know that his mother is still alive and doing very well now. She is in rimission.
@PhysiPhile She is alive and well, although she did have cancer when he was 12 or 13. He talks about it in a different video.
she's fine now and he wants you to apply it to your own life
@PhysiPhile bacana demais nao sabia entender a musica desta maneira obrigado amigo abratz
@PhysiPhile: thanks for your explanation, now the words make so much more sense..
❤❤❤
@PhysiPhile He said he was 12 when his Mom had cancer, but she was okay now.... check out the piano solo version..... he said it could about whatever you want
My dogs just got hit by a car and died. I can’t think of anything better to listen to
Absolutely love it. I was listen to Matchbox before Internet is widely available in the country. I like their live performance so much however those day I don't have access to TH-cam or even their latest news. I am lucky still can watch this today and sounds perfect to my ears.

@PhysiPhile Actually it is about her having cancer. But she didn't die of it though. He said she was fine now.
Forgot how good they are.
❤
good music
Good song
Awesome
I remember watching this performance via DirectTv... but where can you find the whole concert?
I am sooooooooooooooooo feeling this. just puts me in another world so much raw sexy talent
This song is about his mother dying of cancer. Which gives it a lot more meaning, "It's all going to end and it might as well be my fault." Means that she might as well vicariously die with every one thinking it's her fault so she can die with their burdens and relieve them of any guilt.

JAZZY B INSANE SOUNDS LOVE SOUNDS
Just dont think to much ,and enjoy...........
Why is this epic performance offline now??
that drummer is a metronome. lol this is a crazy good version wowee
I dont like this version as much as the upbeat version, but its pretty cool. I didnt dislike it beacuse its ignorant to dislike good music. *liked*
And like Scorpions they are even better in Live performances
I'm with you trigger.......have no idea what presbarkeep is "lol-ing" about
3AM is one of my favorate Matchbox 20 songs, but I just don't get this version. Just doesn't cut it.
Wow
Can anyone share the link to the full set? Would anyone know when this was?
you can interpret the song however you want but you can't change the writer's interpretation, and whatever you interpret from it won't change it's meaning either.
It’s about the worried types like his mum is but it’s me too.
I sing this in a my own version. Rip Dominic Corey Mallen
@NeringaVis Yeah, I used the word dying - not died - for that specific reason. However, I keep getting messages telling me she didn't die and I am mistaken...arg...
How do you download this song to my computer
@PhysiPhile You have no idea what you are talking about. He even said in the piano version, that this song is universal and can be used for whatever you want.
How can you judge people for having their own interpretation of a song?
what's the name of this concert? is there a dvd or something of it?
I think soundstage, they feature classic instruments... late 2000s
@PhysiPhile I didn't mean anything by it. I'm sorry if it came off that way. I didn't notice the other comments. I apologize.
@LiveADreamProduction: actually I said dying not DIED. please see the 50 other post of people responding (sometimes with anger) with the same comment. Now I have to turn off all automatic youtube emails from video posts because of the flood of emails I get about this silly confusion between dying and died.
I would like to ask Rob Thomas to play this with the Dixie Chicks as a duet.
his mothers still alive
Love!

I prefer playing it back at 1.25x speed. Otherwise, for my personal taste the tempo is too slow for acoustic. Give it a try if you disagree.
@nonSteel Of course? Music like all art is interpretive. Just giving his point of view. I couldn't care less if you want to interpret it a different way...
@riffism how is he not a great singer?
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Where do I find the complete show?
Juliano Araújo Leandro the show was "Soundstage"! Not sure where to find it. Maybe Google it!
He is playing the harp backwards!
Change the speed to 1.25. Thank me later.
u can...
@MrSean24601 fuck in the beggining i think its actuallly gerard singing.
@bdill9892 I know i know...I never said she died. PEOPLE: stop saying I said that I've received over 20 messages from people telling me she didn't die. I said "dying" not died. i love this song and that girl at 2:24 is hella hot
Brian Yale is playing harp
Great version. Rob Thomas isn't a great singer...but he is a great writer.
@riffism I beg to differ that he isnt a good singer... Very Unique as was Dylan, Niel Young and Tom Petty. Not the NORM for great voice but Excellent!
I'm not a true fan and I said dying not died. And I wish I could delete my comment because people are thinking too much into it
vampirs?
