The thing I love most about players like Busquets and Messi is how they elevate the players around them. For the longest time, Busquets was the overlooked member of the Barcelona midfield because Xavi and Iniesta were a lot flashier. Messi on the other hand always looks after the other goalscorers and often let’s them take penalties to boost their confidence when they are in a drought. We saw this with martinez vs Charlotte, but he has done the same for Suarez, NeymR and even Mbape in the past. That is what differentiates him from other GOAT candidates like Maradona, Pele and CR7

Mascherano as CM in the late 00's was a great choice for Barca. I was so annoyed that they took him from Liverpool, but i knew Barca was a better spot for him in that time.
in German we called him the vacuum cleaner bc there was no ball passing the midfield without him in either direction.

A few things that maybe the americans or the rest of the world missed about Messi, he could be playing in Europe right now, but he thought in Argentina National team, because he got a training campus in Miami for the AFA because Copa America and World Cup is going to be played in United States, so he's going to be local during those tournaments. Another thing is that he wouldn't be playing if he's not convinced he's going to win something. I as argentinian never thought to watch MLS, is kinda like an american watching argentinian basketball league, is that crazy, but here in Argentina we are watching every Messi match we can. 3:47 that quote really sums up what makes Messi in the MLS different from other players who went over to the US. Look back at David Beckhams stint at LA Galaxy, yes he was also a great player who was superior to his competition, but IMO he made the MLS feel like a retirement home, a league that he went to because he was past his prime, a way for him to wind down his career and eventually set up his own MLS franchise. On the other hand Messis mentality has been nothing but determination to keep playing, and it shows in his performance. Messi isn’t using the MLS to retire, he’s using it as the opposite: so he can keep playing and keep winning.

    • @jazzx251

Times have changed though - the quality of "homegrown" MLS players, or the youngsters from both within and without the league is MUCH better.
To the extent that old has-beens are getting found out pretty quickly if they treat this league as a free ride to retirement.
Alot of them have pissed off to Saudi Arabia for stupefying levels of cash - never to be seen again on a competitive football field again by most people. Because NOBODY is going to watch that Saudi crap. These players have sold their souls, and disappeared themselves.
Lionel was offered that satanic deal - and chose MLS instead for much less money. Good choice.

Having such a charismatic and teamorientated player for a while is a blessing. I still remember when Real Madrid star Raul Gonzales Blanko played at Schalke 04 for two years towards the end of his career, 2010-2012. He worked hard, led by exampel and shot some heartbreakingly beautiful goals. He galvanized his teammates, with Klaas Jan Huntelaar becoming the top scorer of the 2011-2012 Bundesliga season. Its may be an indication of greatness, but no more than that and only offensive players even have a chance to win it. Many of the greatest players ever never did because they were busy defending or passing. He's definitely not the best there ever was, since he wasn't even the best of his time. But he's TOP 10 of all times at least!
People tend to forget his number also skyrocketed and got higher season after season, he broke many records as well.

One thing that I reckon might be food for thought - besides the commercial deals- a few of the reasons why he decided on MLS over the Saudi league was because of the relative security and lifestyle that the US provides, proximity to Argentina, comparative anonymity and potential to leave a real legacy in a league currently undergoing organic puberty and teenage-hood, rather than an infant Saudi league with 5000 fans in stadiums a game (optimistically), artificially force-fed and inflated to grow sideways, but not upwards.
P.s. Messi's commercial team deserves an award

You mention a good point about speed of thought. World class players make the game look easy because they've already decided what they are going to do before they receive the ball. Also a truly world class player has excellent decision making, they know when the try fancy skills and when to keep it simple. Quite often the most simple/ basic football is the most effective, they make the game look easy. This is where Messi. Busquets and Alba excel, their bodies might be slowing down but their speed of thought makes up for it, so they are 2 steps ahead of the opposition.

(9:47) if you look into a interview in a sports channel from Argentina, they asked Riquelme about Busques , and he said because of Busques at Barcelona playing football (soccer) as a number 5 position put the bar level too high that in any club or national team if their #5 doesn't play like busques then they are bad players, he is so good and unique on the way he seems thr gane that nobody can do what he does.

Messi brought two of his fellow Barcelona players to MLS. Sergio Busquets and defense LW Jordi Alba. This Miami team has now three top players that will improve the culture, but seeing what Messi does it’s just common for us people who have seen his entire career to this point. You really have to give props to David Beckham owner of Miami FC, really has taken the league by storm and I can’t wait what they do next season with a full campaign

Another great video. On midfielders you should watch Kevin De Bruyne for a great example of scanning and passing in the current EPL and Steven Gerrard who (in my opinion) is the greatest midfielder in the Premier League era (but I am a Liverpool fan). Iniesta and Xavi at Barça too were phenomenal.

4:00 you don't get as good as Messi or Ibra or CR7, without the constant drive to win, no matter what age are you, no matter where are you playing, no matter what sport are you playing.
You can say that CR/ had to work harder to achieve what he did, while Messi had to just express his natural talent, and i do agree with that statement, but, to be one of, if not the, greateast at something, you just cannot do it with talent alone, you atleast need the drive to compete and win, and Messi always had plenty throughout all of his carreer.

You should react to Ronaldinho. He'll never be considered the goat but if he would have had the drive he could have been in the conversation. The things he did on the pitch dribbling were and are unheard of at that lvl of football. Its like if the Harlem Globetrotters dominated the NBA. So fun to watch.

I mean, he moved from Barcelona, where he was raised for the most part of his life and where he can speak his own language, to Paris. He was clearly not happy there, neither him or his family. Miami is much more similar to Barcelona, weather-wise, language-wise and culturally-wise, and even though MLS is not the best league he can just have fun competing. As a Barça fan, I'm so happy for him.

PSG were overloaded with 3 of the world best attackers and the main man was M'Bappe. PSG were far superior to the opposition so Messi could afford to have poor game, he didnt need to touch the ball and PSG would still win. Where's the motivation in that? Where as at Miami Messi knows it's going to tough as the team is poor, so he knows there's massive responsively on his shoulders, also he realises fans have paid huge ticket prices, so he needs to focus every match. In Europe it was tougher because there's a culture of promotion/ relegation, so the result becomes massively important. Saw the Philadelphia Union goalie smiling last night when he conceded and Philli fans smiling when Messi scored. However in the UK the result is so serious, during any match Messi would be booed with intimidation tactics to put him off his game. Imagine if you played against Messi and if you lost the rule was you're not getting paid, the players wouldn't then be smiling asking for autographs after the game, they would feel angry and so sad that they lost.

Nah, Messi was respected by most in Europe. Opposition fans gave him standing ovations at times, even Real Madrid fans. PSG was just not a good fit, plus the way the transition happened was bad, he wasn't ready. But he still performed well if you check his stats there. So don't let the PSG stint taint your view of how fans in Europe perceived Messi, and that’s coming from a non-European fan 😂. The MLS move is great for US soccer pre World Cup. And Messi was ready for it. That’s why he seems happy. It's a pity that the move has affected ticket pricing, which doesn't happen elsewhere in the world because football is a working class, every day man's sport, whereas in the US it's an elite sport.

Barça is pronounced Barsa, not Barca. It's a "C trencada" in Catalan or "C cedilla" in Spanish. In Spanish was used in medieval times, nowadays it's not in the alphabet anymore. In Catalan it's still used.
