One of the best parts of the final was Montiel that scored the final penalty, he was the one that gave up the last penalty for Mbappé so he got redemption by winning the match with his penalty
Montiel's family was poor, so it is known he used to do penalties for money as a kid. As a professional he has never missed a penalty despite him being a defender. I'm a River fan, his youth club, when I saw he walking as the last penalty taker, I knew we were Champions and started crying before my friends.
From doing penalties for some pocket money as a kid, to the last penalty in the World Cup final.

It's hard to properly put into words what Messi means to us. I've seen this man since i was 6 back in 2006. Just like how Kempes in 1978, and Maradona in 1986 did , we wanted to see him lifting that trophy more than anything. It was an incredibly harsh path from 2006 to 2022. Eliminations, finals lost, him almost retiring, yet he came back and put us at the highest level of football. Youth world cup 2005 , Gold medal at the Olympics 2008, Copa America 2021, Finalissima 2022, and World Cup 2022. He gave us everything playing for our country, for his country. Well it's true that messi doesn't look that old while playing. But he's definitely past his prime. Yet he's still one of the best even today. You just haven't seen prime messi. Nowadays he just uses his brain a lot more and uses his teammates efficienctly. Prime messi was a different type of player. He was an absolute monster. He'd run into a packed defensive line and somehow goes through everyone. He has single handedly taken apart the best defences in the world. He just doesn't have the legs to do that kind of stuff anymore. It is still the most freakish thing I've ever seen in football. Good memories😮💨

An example of how big and beautiful football is. My tiny country Costa Rica in World Cup 2014 finnish in position number 8th we made it to quater finals (lost against the netherlands on pennalties) and that was the greatest thing that my little country has ever made in football history is was an underdog story we beat 3 world champions a country of 5M people beating ex world champions and became top 10 in that WC we didnt even reach semmifinals and was the most magical thing that ever happen to us, the whole country was a party the entire country was on the streets millions and millions celebrating under the same flag, thats how big is football for the rest of the world. Yeah I think your team was in the group of death with Italy, England and Uruguay (7 World Cups) and beat in the next round former European champion greece on penalties if I am not wrong. Ok. Some history about that celebration at the 13:14 mark. That celebration is called "Topo Gigio". The one who first did it was Juan Román Riquelme, another Argentinian magic footballer and one of Messi's teachers in the National Team, who at the time played for Boca Juniors (club crest is my profile pic). After he did the celebration he said it was a reference to the kids show Topo Gigio that his daughter liked, but the gesture of spreading your ears in that stance was actually a tease directed at the club's president who he didn't like much, as a sign of defiance: "I heard what you said".
Thing is, Riquelme went on to play for Barcelona where the coach was Louis Van Gaal, who treated him like shit and made him play in uncomfortable positions, wasting his talent.
That same coach had Angel Di María (one of Messi's teammates in this WC) in Manchester United, and it was the only time where this player failed to perform at club level. Again, the coach's fault.
Louis Van Gaal was now the coach for this Netherlands team and like his whole squad and former dutch players, talked shit about Messi, Di María, and Argentina before this game.
So Messi came to this particular game with rage in his eyes. Doing that celebration he basically says: "You talked too much beforehand, here I am", while also paying tribute (and in a way, doing some poetic revenge) on Riquelme's and Di María's names.

It's been 8 months, and I still cry when I see him drop to his knees. I've loved him since I was a little kid, suffered with him and Argentina since the 2010 World Cup. That man brought so much happiness into my life, I have a symbol representing him inked in my body, he's my idol, my hero and my captain. I just can't put into words the amount of joy seeing that man lift the world cup gave me, truly a moment I won't ever forget, and I'm sure 10, 20, 60 years from now, I will remember with a smile and I will be able to tell my children and grandchildren that I witnessed one of the most beautiful stories life ever told

Messi is a leader and now that is undisputed. However, earlier on in his career when he was younger he was often criticised, especially in Argentina, about not having enough personality. This was due to his natural introverted nature. However, as time went on he began to develop as a leader and character and is not only undoubtably a brilliant captain for Argentina but was also an amazing captain for Barcelona as well. (For example, during the World Cup whenever Argentina were in a pressured situation he would never let any other player do a press interview, and instead took every single one himself in order to protect the players)

Messi is a phenomenal baller, by far the best ever when it comes to playing football. But for a long time people saw him as a silent guy that doesnt lead his team. That is UNTIL recent years where he lead his national team with strenght and passion to win many trophies
I see messi as an artist. I know football before but I love football when I see barcelona plays. It's just beautiful, and messi was one of the artists who make an art in barcelona game.

I've been watching this sport since I was maybe 7 or 8,I'm 33 now. I've seen a lot players during those time but never have I seen someone like Messi. I am glad to be alive and witness this history and when my son is old enough why I have loved this sport and why I bleed for AC Milan and Galaxy, I'll show him videos of Messi. The GOAT 🐐

Another thing is most of these kids that played with Messi in this Argentinean team were young when Messi started playing. They idolized him, he was their role model. They watched him win everything at club level and they watched him try time and again to win with Argentina and failed every single time. They saw the heartbreaking moments, they saw the abuse from his own people, they saw the frustrations so when they got the chance to fight for their idol, they were willing to die for him. They basically played their lives out for him and Messi also gave them their very best. The result is the beautiful ending. If the boys at Miami are willing to play for Messi, the team will go places.

Think he was never viewed as a leader as much as he was never the vocal player on a team never seemed like he bossed players about in a sense told them what to do. However saying that think anyone that played with him respected him highly for being the best him just being in a team would inspire as much hope as a speech some of the best leaders could give
There's also him being Argentina's captain fairly early in his career due to his performance on the pitch. He wasn't very commanding at the time and was very timid, but he's grown into the role and now he certainly is the best captain our NT could've ever had.

Messi not being seen as a leader comes a little bit from his shy or humble personality and a little bit because of being compared to Maradona. Truth be told Messi was not one to lead starting out in his career even though he was the best player even then but through out the years he really molded himself into a great leader especially in the last years with Argentina and absolutely crushed it in this world cup. People even say he was possessed by Maradona and that this version of Messi is the most Maradonian. All that being said, there is a lot of merit into what that lady reporter said, especially if you know the history of futbol with Argentina, Maradona, and Messi. Hope that helps a bit.

Being from Barcelona I can tell you that this world cup is the LAST thing that he needed to be TOP 1 in history. He had achieved everything in football except for that. So winning it is just the cherry on top of his perfect career. This is why it brought so many emotions, not only for Argentina, but also for spanish who had followed him since the beggining.
As a note, you are right; he's a great guy, simple, humble and shy.
Most of us like myself was fortunate enough to watch Messi play his whole career, i grew up playing cricket mostly and when I first started watching football Messi was who made me love the game and I can say the rest is history no amount of words could make anyone truly understand, but I must say seeing him lift that World Cup trophy was like we were all lifting it with him bcuz the doubters had that over his head his whole career but we all knew he was the goat with or without that trophy but the trophy was the icing on the cake.
There are days where I still find it unbelievable that that Argentina team managed to pull off such a victory. It was such an epic and satisfying end to a stellar 17+ year career of perhaps the greatest football player ever to play the game.
This World Cup was also called “The last dance” because it was not only the last one for Messi, but for his rival Ronaldo, Neymar, Suarez, Cavani and a whole generation of greats who were retiring upon elimination.
At end of the video, that commentator didn’t said all the achievements like awards, trophies 🏆 honors 😂 that Messi have if he says, the video will take probably half hour to finish ❤
Many people did not count him as a leader because Messi did not achieve much trophies before for his national team. He lost 2 South American championship final and Fifa WC 2014.

Awesome video, I'm Argentinian and I love to see people from around the world reacting to what I consider to be the best world cup final of all time. That game made me speedrun through all the stages of grief in half an hour. One little detail about what the other guy near the end of the video said though, doing the Panenka in penalties means chiping the ball into the goal rather than shooting with power to either side. This works a lot of times because the goalie usually picks a side and throws himself low, and a ball going high and center is both impossible to catch if you've already picked a side as a keeper and rarely expected because it's not common currency to see penalties taken like that.

I have been watching this beautiful game since 1986 and I have witnessed how Maradona lift the 2nd WC for Argentina and to wait 32 years to see another #10 again do the same thing,put tears on my eyes. Marco van Basten is a former Dutch striker who retired at 28 only because of injuries. He was probably the best striker of his generation, he has won 3 Ballon D’or, but in that time the award was only for European players playing in Europe. As great he was as a footballer, he was quite poor as a manager, which seems to be constant in football, only Zidane I would say is one of the greats that had success also as a manager. Ancelotti and Guardiola were good footballers, but nowhere near Zidane or Van Basten level.
I forgot about Cruyff and Beckenbauer, those 2 were fantastic as football players and as managers and both are Ballon D’or winners.
I am Dutch and Van Basten was incredible and I often agree with him except when he talks about Messi. Sometimes I really don't know what more Messi has to do to convince some people. I mean just watch him. If you don't see he is the greatest, you are wasting your time watching a sport you clearly don't understand. As I said, I am Dutch but I only had one dream and that was for Messi to become World Champion. He deserves it more than anyone else.

That wasn't Messi's signature celebration btw. He did that gesture in the quarterfinals because it was one of the dirtiest match in recent football. 18 yellow cards were given to both the players and the bench staff on both teams.
