I made some copies of your creek devil lures from copper pipe and I had success with them on a recent trip to Michigan where I caught perch and bass. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us.

Great to hear , this is exactly , why I made these videos .
Thanks a lot for your feedback .
But these are not my lures , they are just my versions of lures designed by a guy from Cologne/Western Germany named A. Schrader during the late 1940's :

Cool looking little spoon. I wonder if they will work for walleye here in Michigan. I may have to try and make a couple.

Forgot to mention , .....to bend them in a vise you'd need a square hardwood dowel with an approx. 20° wedge on one side , the point left plane for about 3 to 4mm . Fix metal strip vertically in the vise and rest the dowel's wedge side onto vise and lead blunt wedges point against workpiece . Hit rear of dowel with a hammer to bend around bit by bit . To drill attachement holes utilize a center punch to mark hole locations , so no wandering of drill bit can occur . Good luck , Dieter

So this is what you were talking about.... Sweet! I will try to make one out of a spoon handle. I am at war with a huge steelhead trout, he probably took $20 worh of lures already! Either he broke the line or even the lures itself!

  • @ProFishermanJones

those really look good and thick, a good quality spoon! those are nice designs I've tried to make a lure before ,(wooden crank bait style) and it didn't turn out at all! good job and nice video i liked

  • @61diemai
    @61diemai  12 ปีที่แล้ว

That bend in the belly causes the action of the lure , ...though it does not wobble or flutter as pronounced like an "ordinary" cupped spoon , it still has a kinda subtle "quiver" to it , also spins around it's center axis on the drop .
A spoon without any bends or cupping would not have any of such swimming actions , ...only thing to do with these is to jig them along the bottom or vertically under a boat .
And it would not turn them off , ...not at all , .......good luck , Dieter

nice lures,i have been looking into spoons lately since i caught a fish couple days ago on a spoon i made.saw some post on a forum about how to make them and tryed it out.the spoons were real small for fish like perch, crappies, sunfish.very simple to make too

here's the link www.hotspotoutdoors.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2725640/Making_your_own_spoons_for_pan .i found a little more simple way to build this lure by using slip sinkers and putting the wire through the hole and smashing it flat.

Thanks a lot for that link , ......very interesting ,...... your local perch seem to like them , .......seen similar in a local angling magazine years ago , ....one guy there used roofing lead foil folded and glued around a wire form to make up for a somewhat bigger minnow-shaped asp(European predatory fish , member of carp family) lure of about 2" to 2 1/2" length .

Your welcome ‚ I also have experimented with filling spinner blades with solder for weight and using that as a spoon with added holes for hardware. I tested a small inline blade version already and it has some decent action to it.gonna test it some more. Merry Christmas to you !

I see , that you like making lures the simple way , ......I have some small Finnish spoons , maybe 1 1/2 " to 2" long , ...a tradional style over there consisting of thin stainless or brass sheet with a layer of lead foil glued or riveted onto it , .....covered with foil , paint and topcoat on the outer , lead-covered side , ....quite heavy lures for their size .

Sorry , I do not have , back in the day I've mailordered three lures from someone, who had copied them after vintage originals himself.
And I had used pictures from an article in a German angling magazine, that was issued in 2006:
      raubfisch.de/praxis-und-geraete-alte-eisen-bachteufel-765/
The "Bachteufel" was designed by a tackle shop owner from Cologne named A. Schrader during the late 1940's, during the 1950's and 1960's various companies took over the production, yet it is a very rare vintage lure nowadays.
The guy , whom I bought his copies from back in the day , is named Peter Taudor, his contact data was stated in that article :
Phone: 0049 6439/353 (from abroad to Germany)
      Email: zanderpitt@t.online.de
But 17 years have passed since, we don't know, whether he is still selling his lures or if he's even still there.
Sorry but this is all, I can do to possibly help you.
Nevertheless it is not that hard to make such lures, it does nor even require exact measurements, just a rectangular strip of sheet metal of about1:6 width to length ratio is enough.
One does not even neccessarely need a front or rear taper to the sheet metal blank and instead of the angled belly one may also bend a smal half circle to make up for the deeper belly(more difficult in my opinion)with the front and rear end slightly pointing upward.
A lot may be left to experiment.
As far as for the swimming action, the lure would tightly wiggle on retrieve and on the essential, occassional drop during retrieve it falls spinning around it's own length axis(this is, why I like to attach swivels to the front end), an action said to coax trout strikes quite a bit.
      Best greetings , Dieter

Sorry , there is no video about making this particular lure , but they are quite easy to bend in a vise .
You'd need strips of stainless steel or brass sheets , about 1.5mm thick , a plastic hammer and an ordinary steel hammer , a vise plus a homemade , small wedge of hardwood or aluminium(roughly like 1.5 X 2.5 X 18 cms , narrowest side has the wedge angle), not quite sharp at the tip and with an angle of about 15° to 20° .
Take your metal strip , mark the deepest belly kink with a feltpen , put it in the vise vertically(with the marker line sitting just at upper edge of the vise's clamps)and bend the kink by hand or beats with the plastic hammer .
Now mark the kinks forward and behind the belly kink , clamp into the vise in same manner with marker line flush to upper edge of the vise's clamps and place your wedge onto the vice to hit the metal strip right there , use the steel hammer to beat the rear of the wedge to bend the metal strip to the angles like on the lures in the video .
You do not have to bother about accurate measurements and angles , ...just "abouts" should do as well !
Bending without such a wedge is hardly possible , because if you'd try to bend the second and third kink by hand , you're likely to bend the first , deepest belly kink straight again !
It is of advantage to leave the metal strip a little longer and cut off either end after ALL bending work is done , this way you would only have to care about proper distances of the kinks to one another and not the relations to the metal strip's ends , .......I find it much easier this way .
Finally file or grind the lure's ends round , mark hole locations , use a center punch to make starter indents for your drill bit to find grip and drill holes through .
For my own versions here I had used handles of stainless soup spoons , which I had left over from making big pike spoons from the spoon portions , .......saved me from having to cut out metal strips .
I hope this helps a little bit , ...thanks a lot for your interest , greetings from northern Germany , Dieter

well I have to say that it seems that I couldn't caught de correct angle for the spoon... (this one) but the luhr jensen works great! I'm gonna make some on differents sizes... could you give some measurements for the Bachteufel?? thanks for the answer my friend!

    • @61diemai
      @61diemai  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry , but I do not have any exact measurements , please scroll further down within the comments here , there is a 3 years old comment , where I talk about the length/width relation of the spoon .
Sadly I had to delete the instructional video mentioned , as I was threatened by TH-cam to have used illegal audio contents(actually it was just a radio playing in the background down my workshop) , and I did not want to get involved into a lawsuit .
Also in this video I'm talking about rough sizing , but it is really not that important .
To bend the spoon blank in a vise it requires a little , blunt pointed wedge of square or rectangular cross-sectioned hardwood or aluminium , .....you'd set that wedge onto the top of the vise and hit it's rear with a hammer to engage to the vertically clamped metal spoon blank .
This way you can clamp the blank by it's two outer ends and furnish the two inner kinks with that wedge , otherwise it would be rather awkward or even impossible to clamp the workpiece without flattening out previously bent kinks , .....make sure , that all the four planes are well aligned and none gets tilted to one side , as this might also cause the lure to spin on retrieve .
Once , you'd get the hang of it , it comes quite easy , believe me , ...use standing pictures of this video for reference for the angles , but top notch accuracy is not that important , as long , as all of the four planes of the lure create some kind of a little "belly" ponting downward , as this renders the center of gravity lower to let the spoon swim stable without spinning(should only spin on the drop , not on retrieve).
You should definately get some kind of action out of it , experiment with slightly different angles and body relations , ....further down in the comments to this video I had also provided a link to the mentioned German angling magazine about three years ago , you may also check this site for a few more pictures of the "Bachteufel" .
Great to hear , that at least your "Luhr-Jensen" -version works well for you so far , ......tight lines !
Good luck and thanks a lot for your interest , Dieter

Have never tried it on other species but those stocker trout in our fishing ponds , ......but might work for zander(European walleye) and European perch (very simliar to your yellow perch), if jigged along the bottom , ..in this case I would rig a single hook to avoid too much snagging . Hello buddy, what do you use to cut sheet metal that thick? Your spoons seems to be quite thick, I am wondering what tool you use to cut the sheet metal into small pieces to make the spoons? I am looking into making these spoons myself because I lose a lot of lures every time I go fishing and it is getting expensive! Oh, what do you punched the holes on the spoons with? If I am sounding clueless, sorry about that. I have never made a lure in my life before. I would love watching you make one of these lures in a step-by-step fashion and post it on TH-cam so that I know exactly what to do. What tool did you use to smooth out all the edges and still be able to keep these edges shiny after you cut the spoons? Thanks a lot buddy, your advice is superb and helpful to all the fishermen out there!

Metal lures are not that easy to make compared to wooden lures , not many people make them , as quite a bit of elbow grease is involved , if not having access to power tools .

    • @61diemai
      @61diemai  11 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry , but no exact measurement available , just doing it after estimation , also depending on general size of the spoon .
Roughly the flat front portion is 1/6 of the entire length , either shank of the "V" another 1/6 and the flat rear part is the remaining 3/6 of entire length , ...just approximately , not really that important .
I have made a "How-To" Video about making these spoons , but one TH-cam user commented below , that it was not available in the USA anymore , guess , because a radio is playing in my workshop whilst I was filming .
Check my replies to William Coder down below , in one of the replies mentioning "zanderpitt" is a link to a magazine essay , some more pictures of such lures there . Good luck , Dieter

I'm getting my stainless spoons used from fleamarkets , a lot cheaper than shops , but take simple stainless steel only , ...no silver plated spoons and no highly alloyed stainless ones containing good shares of manganese , chrome or molybdenum (the expensive stuff) , first ones are unsuitable and second ones are too hard to work down .
Might also check out local scrap metal dealers for copper , brass or stainless sheets , also cheaper than buying at the hardware store or RC model shop . Good luck , Dieter
