I found a lot of sources saying 224 cars were built, and a lot saying 214. I went with the conservative figure, but if you know for certain, let me know!
You can make a replica of this, you need an Audi 80 Quattro as the base vehicle, and then you need an ordinary Audi coupe without the flared arches from the same era, it's been done in Europe quite a few times, you know you want one!
You are absolutely spot on that it's goofy looking. That's also what clearly sets it apart from the base model. It feels almost "wrong", thought it's a sin to call the sport quattro wrong by any measure. And this particular specimen you've filmed is immaculate. Thank you!!!
A gentleman named Frank Bador founded a group called Quattro club USA now known as Audi Club. In 1988 I was fortunate enough to drive one of his seven Sport Quatro‘s and it was truly amazing to drive at the Virginia City hill climb. I am also fortunate enough to own an 82 Ur Quattro coupe with 38,000 km on it for the last 34 years. There truly is nothing like the sound of a five cylinder Audi at full scream!
I’ve owned a V12, still own several V8s, had V6s as daily’s… but the hottest engine I’ve ever owned was the Audi I5 2.3, I had it as the German Audi100 C4! This engine was priceless in everything you threw at it…. But you homage videos are absolute TOP SHELF…. A work of art, keep rocking Mike!
Great Video. These AWD Audis were incredible performance machines of their time. A friend of mine in HS in the ‘80s would sometimes have his parents Audi Quattro. He would drive that thing very fast and even on rainy days, that thing would absolutely stick to the pavement. I have never had an Audi, but I want a Quattro variant badly.
These cars have left some fantastic memories working on the Rally of New Zealand as part of stage start crew, howloing turbos and screaming Mazda rotaries 🤗🤗🤗
So a lifetime BMW owner I recently sold my E38 and bought a 2013 very low mile A8L, tt. Because of your love of Audi’s you have converted me to give it a shot. I love the car so far. A quick tune and it makes a respectable 575hp. Pearl white. No one see’s it coming. Loved this episode away from the shop Mike!!
I’m glad you didn’t bother with chopping yours down to make a short wheelbase car, like you mentioned in an early episode. Not that it wouldn’t have been entertaining to watch you learn and teach some in depth body mods, but we all know you enjoy the mechanical side of builds more. And we sure enjoy watching you do your thing. Keep up the good work and we look forward to the next installment. 👌🏼
Totally agree that the profile looks awkward, I have always preferred the longer wheelbase, but what a car! I can't wait to see your quattro done and ripping with sweet 5 cyl sounds!
Back in the 80's my friends and I managed to follow the Circuit of Ireland with the Sport Quattro's operating at full chat. Absolutely nuts in the hands of the professional drivers. We were also allowed to get up close to the cars and drivers at the service points along the way. Today I have a 2007 A6 S Line 2.7TDI Quattro right hand drive Le Mans Speck. Did not know what I was buying at the time on the Le Mans Speck, but boy does it go and roasts most anything in the wet on back roads. You just keep on the gas even though it is a diesel, it's amazing. Certainly won't be selling it any time soon and it has 160,000 miles on it. The Quattro system in in my opinion unmatched.
Careful ! You are doing quite good at these types of videos. You might end up like others be a full time video reviewer. Your delivery is perfect for us car people and your true love of this topic certainly shows. Keep up the good work. I would hate it, cause I love your builds as well!
These original Sport Quattros were from my childhood and made me always want one. Fast forward many decades and I finally had the chance to own a Quattro, not a sport Quattro, but a 2023 Audi RS3 and I love it and driving it.
Beautiful car! It's nice to see how much they trust you, and it probably doesn't hurt to see how enthusiastic you are about the car. These cars and their rally brethren are the reason I got my first Audi years ago.
I know V10s, V12s, etc. they all are cool... but there is just something about the 5pot turbo that stands out to me. Is it the strange uneven number of cylinders, or maybe the amazing sound they produce? I have no clue, but man I love the 2.5L 5pot in my car. Every cold start and drive brings a smile to my face, and that paired with the bright green exterior just makes for a (for me) truely special thing.
As someone who grew up watching rally highlights where this and the Lancia fought it out, I always wanted one of these. Nowadays the best I can hope for is the money to afford a replica (and for that replica to somehow be RHD because Australia). Watching this made me smile and remember, so thanks 😊
They weren't the best Group B rally car back in the day, but they were 100% the coolest! I can remember just beginning my rally driving in Australia in an old Datsun 510 and watching these things on TV roaring, jumping and spitting flames from both the exhaust AND the screamer pipe under the sump guard 😍 I was amazed beyond belief!!!
Well, when I was young (but not too young to drive), one of those 214 was parked outside my college. While I really loved that car, I never had the opportunity to drive, I think that the Lancia Delta HF Integrale had something more to say. In an era where cars were usually much different from one another, the Quattro backend was clearly taken from Lancia.
I got a ride in one of those back in '89 or '90. A buddy from college had one. It was also my first experience with a sub woofer. It wa quite the ride. And I'm 6'7" and I rode sideways in the back seat.
For me it was the Renault 5 Maxi from that era of rallying Mike but there is no doubt the look, performance and the sound of that turbo 5 banger roaring through the countryside is amazing! Really looking forward to seeing what you do with yours👍
There was a guy in the uk that used a sport Quattro to tow his race sport quattro. Also had the pleasure to drive one back in the day was one happy guy .
You are correct - this is an absolute legend of a car.... I'm sure most of us have watched the "close call" rally videos (just like you had in this one) of the cars driving at incredible speeds through what seems like a sea of people. A king, much like the Integrale was.... another not-so-pretty (in my opinion) , boxy car. Thanks for the vid! All the best!
I wish I could have the opportunity to drive my 1990 E30 325i back when it was low miles like this. Must have felt like an amazing car, and I am slowly bringing it back to that new feeling!
What a treat! That is such a magical car. I have an E92 drift car but still think of my 99.5 A4 Avant. With a big turbo back in the day it only made 250hp, but there was something about that car I still miss. Audii made some awesome cars.
Thanks for sharing Mike. I still recall many years ago (many)............ Several Group B car passing me whilst I sat on a wall about 2m from one at full speed in a city / urban round. Truly amazing.! Yeah spectators ARE stupid. And Group B is my inspiration in my cars to TODAY.
The subscription to this channel is is worth it simply to see the passion radiate out of you like a Care Bear. The history behind the vehicles that you you interview is something to admire as well. Keep doing what you do.
Amazing car! I remember them when they were new but still unattainable for an average person. Any article about them in magazines like C&D, Motortrend etc. were read with great reverence. Thanks for the quick drive and really like your content. Can’t wait to see the quattro when your done.
i like the difference in videos - some in-depth detailed engineering & fabrication, through to the high level look at cars like this and others - its a good mix - thanks :)
Glad you mentioned the wheelbase. The car is a legend and absolutely a pinnacle of homologation specials. That said, it’s just plain weird compared to the longer wheelbase version which frankly looks fantastic in my opinion. A hybrid of the two would tick all the right boxes.
One day in Paris I found myself behind a Quattro and shamefully didn't notice the Sport sign for a few seconds. Then I realised we were both followung a Peugeot 205T16. Seconds later they roared up an on ramp and away from me. My best efforts in my Dad's Peugeot estate weren't up to the challenge but watching them weave for a few seconds was epic. 1986 i think.
I am fortunate to service a Sport Quattro at work and it’s such an awesome driving experience! Definitely in my top 5 out of all the cool shit I get to drive.
For me the rally cars were out of this world standing 15 feet away Audi sponsrd the "Climb to the Clouds". I was a shuttel driver usually make 4 runs a day. I always vollentered every three years. Check out Travis Pastrana record run. Excellent camera shots. I met Travis on top after his run, he's a real spokes person for the sport.
I love these kind of episodes. I could listen to these history lessons for hours. Keep them up, these are perfect fill ins between fabrication episodes.
Shoutout to the skunkworks project, the mid-engine RS001. As Group B went on, it became clear shorter wheelbases and midship engine placement were the most optimal setup for rallying. While the Sport Quattro was shortened, its engine placement over the front axle couldn’t be changed, and it was a handful to drive, so much so that some drivers (IIRC, Stig Blomqvist) actually preferred the Ur Quattro design. The S1 E2 bodywork helped a little, but only a complete redesign would fix the understeer issues and engine placement. However, the higher ups at Audi didn’t approve, as they thought a new design would hurt the image of the car (something along those lines, it’s been a while since I read the story). The engineers, however, decided to make a mid-engine prototype in secret anyways. According to the test runs, it was a much better car to drive immediately (I believe Walter Rörhl said). Sadly, the mid-engine design was not to be, as reporters got wind of Audi testing the car, and even after moving to a different location, one reporter managed to get pictures and report the testing to the press. Higher ups were pissed, shut down the project immediately, and scrapped the prototypes.
I remember 15 years ago Cameron’s Audi of Perth, Scotland had a red 1984 one of these for £33,000 parked on the roadside. Only time I have ever seen a road going one in real life
Great car looked like a fun to drive. Due to its value understand why it was limited to few drives up and down the street. Wow!!! great vid thanks for sharing. You don't see these cars on the road every day.
To me, the Lancia 037 is my favorite of this era. Which was also driven by Walter Rohrl. I just love the story of that season of how the underdog 2wd managed to take on the all wheel drive Audi. Just almost Hollywood like, and how they'd be the last to do it. I respect the Quattro, it's place in automotive history, and the legends that drove the first few years of them. But the 037 just has that X factor and I love the way it looks.
The Sport Quattro is a unicorn and deserves it's reputation. I saw it at the 1986 RAC Rally and have some grainy photos of one at the overnight stop at Liverpool (Albert Dock). That said it's not a great looking car, especially compared to the original Ur Quattro which is one of my dream cars. Regarding the Group B era, here in the UK two cars that got most of my attention were the Ford RS 200 and the Metro 6R4. Although not as competitive as the Audi/Lancia/Peugeot offerings, they were completely bonkers, especially the 6R4 which was loosely based on the Austin Metro, a turd of a hatchback that I had the misfortune to learn to drive in. Both went on to be very successful in rallycross. MST cars in Wales is currently working on a new version of the 6R4 which should be a monster.
The first car I thought was "Cool", when I was growing up. Such awesome times, when all the big rally teams made the journey to drive in "Rally New Zealand". Hard to imagine these transiting between stages, out amongst the public.
When Juha Kankkunen sold his Hannu Mikkolas 1000 Lakes 1985 E 2, it clocked bit over 2 million euros. He bought the car from Hannu, Hannu got it from Audi. Hannu Mikkola was works Audi driver with Walther, Michele and Stig. Juha Kankkunen won world title with T 16 1986, and three more in total with Lancia and Toyota. You got sub.
You know I'm a sucker for old, boxy, widebody cars. I do agree though that the wheelbase makes the side profile look a bit wonky proportionally. Glad you got to have a once in a lifetime opportunity. I know the Audi build is on the back burner for good reason, but this definitely helps reignite some interest in it
I had a 309 awhp 4000quattro with 20v 😊 5 cyl turbo noise is best ever. Have 2 Vw B2 Passat Quantum Syncro wagon projects both have 20v turbo power. Some assembly required.
Great vid!! Know you're busy trying to get the GTK together, but these "field trip" vids add a lot of character and interesting variation to the content!!
Love the video, and there is even a part in the bit that was filmed in the city where in live in the Netherlands. It starts from 2:51, amazing to see, and again thanks for another great video. 😁👍🏼
I found a lot of sources saying 224 cars were built, and a lot saying 214. I went with the conservative figure, but if you know for certain, let me know!
I know for certain, just letting you know
I'm like 60% sure it's somewhere between 0 and 999999999
You can make a replica of this, you need an Audi 80 Quattro as the base vehicle, and then you need an ordinary Audi coupe without the flared arches from the same era, it's been done in Europe quite a few times, you know you want one!
If there were enough to require crash testing, that might account for the missing 10.
You are absolutely spot on that it's goofy looking. That's also what clearly sets it apart from the base model. It feels almost "wrong", thought it's a sin to call the sport quattro wrong by any measure. And this particular specimen you've filmed is immaculate. Thank you!!!
I swear you could be a youtube automotive journalist within two weeks! I love these episodes, it's not often we get to see gems like this!
A gentleman named Frank Bador founded a group called Quattro club USA now known as Audi Club. What a sign of respect and trust for him to let you take that out on public roads. I'm sure you enjoyed that even more than you let on. Congrats, man!
Definitely keep the mix of builds and cool car videos. I like that your channel is not just about building cars; it's about being an enthusiast.
Enthusiast is the key.
Nothing beats 80's and 90's homologation specials. Looks incredibly well built!
I'm an Alfa/Lancia guy, but it's hard not to love and respect a car like this. Thanks for sharing!
037, 155dtm, and sport Quattro as the ultimate homologation garage for me
Ich liebe den Sportquattro!!!!
Optik, Sound, Geschichte....einfach nur ein Traum.....!
80’s perfection. This and the Audi 50 are about the only Audi’s I’d Truely like to own.
Wow 😮 That good then 🙂
I am building my dream V12 supercar with the OG zonda engine 😎
Great Video.
These AWD Audis were incredible performance machines of their time.
A friend of mine in HS in the ‘80s would sometimes have his parents Audi Quattro.

One of the sickest rally cars ever , being 60 I remember them dominating the world rally scene. Beautiful sound that 5 cylinder . Top one Mike .

Ahhhh 1983 all over again....crewing and (occasionally) driving an Audi Quattro ex-Werkes car that was campaigned in SCCA Pro-Rally. Thanks!
This car is such a LEGEND! So awesome to see this near perfect example. Can’t wait to see how your Ur turn out!
5 cylinder noises, something us Volvo guys have been hoarding. ❤
dude that is a childhood dream car i loved group b and the audi is by far my favorite
Mine is the Renault R5 Turbo, but any group B rally car would be a dream to drive let alone own (other than the diecast versions I collect😂)
@@phonetics8272 i made them in lego
Closing my eyes, I can see the cutaway drawings of this car in magazines when I was growing up. Now, THERE IT IS . WOW. Wordless . . .
One of the best sounding cars ever. I will never forget watching them back in the day going flat chat with that wastegate fluttering.
Please don’t stop making those episodes. Your way to tell the cars history so unique!
These original Sport Quattros were from my childhood and made me always want one. Fast forward many decades and I finally had the chance to own a Quattro, not a sport Quattro, but a 2023 Audi RS3 and I love it and driving it.
Anyone who saw Harry review that red Sport Quattro will understand just how good they are to drive.
Love the color, thanks for posting!
This just gets me more excited to watch your Audi build videos in the future!
congrats on getting to drive such a rare car
You lucky bastard. You've earned it, but still. Nice work.
The SQ is in my top 3 grail cars .
Always have loved them .
That’s a truely beautiful example !
Beautiful car! It's nice to see how much they trust you, and it probably doesn't hurt to see how enthusiastic you are about the car. These cars and their rally brethren are the reason I got my first Audi years ago.
My local VAG (UK) dealer had one in the showroom for years. Plus watched them rally in their day, awesome sound.
That car looks insane, I love it
My mom had this 86 Audi 4000 when I was a kid. 5speed, and had that EXACT same steering wheel. Seeing the in car footage took me back 😁
Got to say, its best colour is the dark green. Looks absolutely gorgeous. Stunning.
My Childhood dream car of all time ...... just simply FANTASTIC and that 5 cylinder sound is orgasmic to say the least.......
Definitely 👍
I am building my dream car 😎
I'm not the biggest Audi fan, but that one is just sick. The short wheelbase just does it for me.
I know V10s, V12s, etc. they all are cool... but there is just something about the 5pot turbo that stands out to me. Is it the strange uneven number of cylinders, or maybe the amazing sound they produce? I have no clue, but man I love the 2.5L 5pot in my car. As someone who grew up watching rally highlights where this and the Lancia fought it out, I always wanted one of these. Nowadays the best I can hope for is the money to afford a replica (and for that replica to somehow be RHD because Australia).
Watching this made me smile and remember, so thanks 😊
Always loved these. True unicorn status
Dude!!! Stoked you were able to drive it around the block and give her some beans. Bad ass.
It looks perfectly in proportion to me. Like it wants to go around corners, not just lurch along in a straight line like a land barge.
They weren't the best Group B rally car back in the day, but they were 100% the coolest!
I can remember just beginning my rally driving in Australia in an old Datsun 510 and watching these things on TV roaring, jumping and spitting flames from both the exhaust AND the screamer pipe under the sump guard 😍
I was amazed beyond belief!!!
Most people can only dream of taking one of these cars for a quick spin around the block. It’s well deserved that you’re one of the lucky few who has.
In this years 1000 Lakes (Secto Rally Finland) I stood next to Moutons Audi. I saw group B cars live when I was a kid.
That sound is worth every watch of old rally footage!!!! Subscribed for the _potential_ of a series!!
I've been lucky enough to be passenger in one of this, and was one of these moments of life where you feel a little kid again. Fantastic car!
Absolute legend for letting you rip it around
Shoutout the homies at Copley West. Always something interesting in the garage
Honestly, I enjoy the mix of history car buff vids and builds/breakdowns. Plus you got to drive one of the coolest cars ever!
It’s like meeting your favorite supermodel and only being able to shake her hand
Thanks for sharing Mike!
Amazing car! I remember them when they were new but still unattainable for an average person. Any article about them in magazines like C&D, Motortrend etc. were read with great reverence. Thanks for the quick drive and really like your content. Can’t wait to see the quattro when your done.
Absolutely fire! 🔥 The 5 cylinder turbo is why I bought my RS2.
Dude yr mini documentaries are sone of the highest quality on YT, together with the mix of building cars you are a hidden gem on the tube
Awesome flashback!!! That color with those wheels pops so hard you don't care its a short wheel base . I know the cornering has got to be sick too
After watching this episode, I had a dream that I got a ride in a Sport Quattro. So, watching this clearly made an impression on me.
i like the difference in videos - some in-depth detailed engineering & fabrication, through to the high level look at cars like this and others - its a good mix - thanks :)
Glad you mentioned the wheelbase. The car is a legend and absolutely a pinnacle of homologation specials. That said, it’s just plain weird compared to the longer wheelbase version which frankly looks fantastic in my opinion.
A hybrid of the two would tick all the right boxes.
As a kid Id watch the Sprongle crew rip the 90 in Rally races in Quebec. That 5 cylinder turbo howl still echoes in my soul
Epic vehicle.
Hope the other special machine is also a group B car! 037 or Delta S4 are my favourites, but they are all amazing.
I do like these car reviews. And you get to put out an episode that doesn't cost you thousands in parts, so it's all good.
Mike,
thanks for the great car feature episode. the Sport Quattro is a legend. ...i always enjoy seeing your Ford Motorsport hat!
I still remember the Dahlback build back in the days 😍 And dont let us forget his 1000 HP VW Golf also. It was insane Horsepower number those days😍
I am fortunate to service a Sport Quattro at work and it’s such an awesome driving experience! Definitely in my top 5 out of all the cool shit I get to drive.
Great episode, I agree with you... never could get fully into the short wheel base look. However the rest of the car is absolutely bonkers!!!
I think you’re a great story teller. Thank you! I love your stoke/passion for the cars. 🙏🏼
That’s one hell of a car collection in the background!
For me the rally cars were out of this world standing 15 feet away Audi sponsrd the "Climb to the Clouds". I was a shuttel driver usually make 4 runs a day. I always vollentered every three years. I love these kind of episodes. I could listen to these history lessons for hours. Keep them up, these are perfect fill ins between fabrication episodes.
I agree about the wheelbase. Your Audi looks better no matter how rare or expensive the Sport Quattro is.
Awesome story and car. Can’t wait to see your personal Quattro go through the s/w treatment.
Regarding the Group B era, here in the UK two cars that got most of my attention were the Ford RS 200 and the Metro 6R4. Both went on to be very successful in rallycross. MST cars in Wales is currently working on a new version of the 6R4 which should be a monster.
So glad you made this ep. Love that car. Stoked you got to drive it.
Amazing video! That drive got me so nervous. I’m glad you got to drive a real SQ.
The first car I thought was "Cool", when I was growing up. Such awesome times, when all the big rally teams made the journey to drive in "Rally New Zealand". Hard to imagine these transiting between stages, out amongst the public.
I like the respect and admiration you show those automotive achievements. If only all engineers could have the freedom to create their ideas.
Bring back old homologation rules, it yielded beautiful cars (Subaru's 22B, Audi's Quattro Sport, Lancia's Delta Integrale, Mercedes 190e evo 2)
Just finished your old video and now you dropped this!!! What a time to be alive!!!
The wheelbase is a lil goofy but the car pulls it off. Thanks for the video!
There are very few cars I actually get jealous of the owners and you’ve done videos on both of them now.
