    Three things:
    1. Call the bastards out. Nobody should take 8K and walk away with no consequences. It's not for drama, it's accountability. If I did that I'd expect to get called out.
    2. I'd love to hear Brett Walker talk on the video, imparting his wisdom, talking about his tools and the process.
    3. That head is pure art, look forward to seeing how it performs.

    • @douglasburnside
      @douglasburnside 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hmmm... I wonder. If you are trying to keep the same overall diameter/circumference you will have a taller sidewall, i.e. larger tire, and the tire might add more weight than is saved by the smaller wheel. Or maybe that isn't the plan at all, I don't know. In any case, I am not a fan of disproportionately large wheels so keeping the 16's would be my preference as well.

Awesome work - I love watching your ideas play out and comparing to what I've done and plan to do with my '84. I know you will nail the wheels! I went with 16x8 replicas by 3SDM and run 225s. For brakes, I did a vacuum conversion and plan to install Boxster S calipers with A8 rotors up front. My understanding is with the apikol adapters, these are a direct fit and work with 16's. The rears will be converted to URS4 stock rears. I went through the suspension, subframes, etc already just as you did (mine had 2 bennet coil overs already), although my powder coat shop mistakenly used gloss black. My motor is a mostly stock 10v - I'm excited to see how your AAN comes together and gets installed. Fewer and fewer people are around that know how to do this right so documenting here is super helpful. This car will be a hoot!

I won't repeat anything others have said about how awesome the car is going to be, but I will say in regards to the end of the video (and I'm a lot older than you) that I still struggle to attain a philosophy as mature as yours. We're all going to leave money on the table over the course of our lives in any number of ways, but simply acknowledging that fact and moving on is in my opinion the best way to handle it. You've figured that out at a young age (at least on screen, lol). I really like your line "I just want to build my car"; that says it all.
As far as others who might deal with whichever company it is, you put the bug in everyone's ear and anyone who needs to know more before they commit shouldn't have too much trouble by doing their due diligence.

The sport Quattro was still using ugly DOT headlights and some re-purposed OEM headlights from another car may suit the car well.

I am going to try to put some light to the "dimpled effect" on the intake pipe walls.
Whenever there is a fluid with certain velocity around a wall, near the wall it is created a zone called "boundary layer". This zone can be either laminar or turbulent depending on the local Reynolds number of the flow.
When there is a fast or sharp change in that wall, a deattachnent of the flow happens, this means that the flow does not travel the direction it is supposed to and recirculation zones can be created.
Since turbulent bounday layers deattach from a wall later than laminar ones, golf balls or tennis balls have these not perfectly plain surfaces allowing the ball to reach a higher speed and hence reducing drag.
Hope this helps, love your videos

The satin black powder coating is the only way to do suspension parts full stop!!! A reliable, high HP vehicle is how you can have your cake and eat it 😊 500WBHP will be more than enough to have some fun with and blow away many other performance vehicles. It's all about torque under the curve and not outright power to make a truly driveable car 👌

It looked perfect. I had seen other people with 17 and 18s and they looked to big. Now I drive a 09' Forester lowered 3 inches on coilovers with 18x9-1/2 wheels. They actually look to small.

The dimpling of the ports helps prevent wall wetting in the ports by assisting the atomised fuel to remain in suspension on it's way to the cylinder. It's particularly helpful with carb induction, as well as increasing flow, as covered in depth in the video.

Id say you're at a point where it would be fruitious and meticulous about everything. Wouldn't skimp on anything like oiling, fueling, cooling and braking. The 16s and the thread width are my only convern however tasteful it is! Looking forward to seeing this develop into the magical monster its going to inevitably be! 💪🥶

Glad you're taking a dive into this again! Avoid using those 034 engine mounts. They'll basically fail immediately with that much power. They fail with stock power. 😂
    I've heard Verkline is better.

The dimpling on the inside of the port also has the effect of further atomizing and mixing a fuel/air mixture, and also "straightening" the overall airflow through the port. It does this by making the airflow within a certain distance from the wall more turbulent. The air/fuel mixture in the center will act less upon the walls of the port, and more upon the turbulence near the surface of the wall, itself. It seems anti-intuitive, but it does create a more uniform, and better-mixed fuel-air charge, and also increases overall port volume. Logic says removing material from the inside leaves room for airflow.

I highly recommend tossing those black ignition coils, those are stock ones starting in 2002 and are super weak, go for the R8 red tops, never had one go out on me in 5 years vs I was chasing misfires till I upgraded

I respect anyones builds and particularly yours, but so glad you didn’t cut up the car. And, FWIW, I think the quad headlights with the euro bumpers you have is the best look. Some people really love them. I’d like to try a shot at convincing you to keep the!! .. but ultimately to each their own. I’m potentially interested in buying those headlights if you decide to go that route.

Very cool car. Excited to see where its going! A word of wisdom, don't use those ARP washer included with the head stud kit. ARP undersized the washers and the end up squashing the cylinder head. Larger ones will spread the clamp over a larger surface.

I also like 80's 90's era cars, one of my favorites among others is the famous Quattro S1 5cyl. The iconic sound and form of the car is unbeatable. Glad you didn't go for 17 or 18 inch wheels and a wide body. Your car will be a diamond when finished. Perfect choice of the cyl.head the dimpled intake and polished exhaust runners. Some use dimples on the valve's outer surface (where air hits it). It also makes wonders with carb engines, gasoline atoms will not condense on the runner's walls that easily because of the air cushings/turbulences. Intake velocity will increase because of the turbulence layers at the walls decreasing the diameter (velocity = pressure * surface) but because they ported the runners it should be the same with increased CFM (bigger crosssection area). I also like your thinking about not spreading hate. Keeping the good vibes and mindset up and forward. Looking forward to the upcoming videos!

The story goes that the BMW F1 team left their 1.5 liter 4-cylinder blocks out in the weather to go rusty, and incidentally let any stresses work their way out. After cleaning them up again, the finished turbo engines made 1500 bhp in qualifying trim and ran reliably for a race distance at 1200. Perhaps that's what they were going for with that 5-pot?

Sounds embellished. As far as I know they bought used blocks that had tens of thousands of kilometers on them. The heat cycles and vibration from real-world use are going to de-stress a block way more than weather.

    The quattro is back!
Looking forward to seeing it built. I put 18s on mine and eventually had to admit my mistake. The stock 15s ride and handle way better. I’d like 16s but don’t have the budget right now to get the custom setup I’d need for correct fitment.
Also you’re not alone with being ripped off, I spent a couple of grand on an efi conversion kit that never arrived.

Yeah, I ran some inexpensive 17's for a while on my 1983, but they felt too heavy. I ended up going back to Fuchs 15". Who can argue with 13 lbs.
