"You Keep Me Hanging On" by Kim Wilde
"Hazy Shdae of Winter" by The Bangles
    "Venus" by Bananarama

60’s songs all needed a compelling hook that grabbed you. To make it in the 60’s you had to have a charting single of 2:30- 3:00 minutes in length on AM radio. AM radio was king. FM was just getting its legs in the seventies.
“Green-Eyed Lady” by Sugarloaf was another top charting song of the same time. Every high school band played it.

The other thing is that it had to sound good on AM radio on a crappy speaker. One of the reasons for Spector's wall of sound.

Amber, you are 100% correct when you said this was 60's (1969, to be exact) and psychedelic rock. You have come SO far in your musical knowledge! Lead singer Mariska Veres (RIP) had a great voice and stage presence. As for the name of the Jefferson Airplane/Starship lead singer you ask about, that would be Grace Slick. 🙂
For your next Shocking Blue outing, give "Mighty Joe" a spin. My favourite by them.

If you listen carefully you can hear Mariska Veres sing “godness” on a mountain top…there was a typo in the lyrics and she didn’t know English very well so she sang what she read instead of the intended word “goddess.” The song was written by the band’s guitarist, Robbie van Leeuwan.

This band is Dutch. It was the goal of the guitarist and band leader to have created a Jefferson Airplane/Starship equivalent in Europe. They essentially succeeded, because while not so popular here in the States, this band was huge in Europe. My favorites are "Never Marry A Railroad Man" and "Inkpot". Never Marry A Railroad Man can be equated to never marry a trucker, or sailor, or airline employee.... Inkpot, we don't use ink pots anymore, so it won't conceptually translate easily, but you needed/used ink pots all the time in the day. A good example of her vocals is on Send Me A Post Card Baby

I was in 8th grade in 1969 when the song came out. I remember playing it on my radio. The singer, Mariska Veres, mispronounced the second word of the lyrics as "goddness" (a goddness on a mountaintop), as that's how it was mistakenly written for her. Later versions of the recording corrected it to "goddess".

Jordan, your guess about why in the 50s and 60s sound different is precisely the equipment - like you said. Big advances in multitrack recording were seen in the mid to late 60s. The sound and how it was rendered definitely changed, definitely became fuller.

  • @Databyter

This song was sort of an anthem in the late 60's and it was played on the radio a lot. From the very beginning where you just hear a single guitar strumming, it is comfort music. It was part of the sound track of the summer of love. I never knew at the time that it was a foreign group (Dutch), I was a kid I just heard it on the radio, and I loved the guitar and the sound of the lead singer. She sounded tough and hip. Little did I know that she was a shy Foreigner who was just emulating the 60's sound with a VERY proficient band backing her. They were all quite skilled and this song was deservedly popular. The song went viral and I think they were just as surprised as anybody else and went for a nice ride for several years touring. Thanks for sharing it. Databyter

I met the drummer in Rotterdam. I said, "OMG we were all in love with your singer!". He told me that she was the reason they did not make it to the top, apparently, she put on weight to the point where the TV bookings stopped. He earned a million Guildas from this one song.

Good song, takes me back to high school. If you would like to hear a significantly more psychedelic song from Shocking Blue, that would be Daemon Lover (yes the spelling is correct). I think that is a much better song. Venus is more 60’s pop for the charts.

There are SO SO SO many classic songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s that turn up in TV commercials. In fact, one that is super common on TV these days is Land of 1000 Dances by Wilson Pickett. I can't remember what the commercial is for, unfortunately, but every time it comes on, I think "Wow that would be a great song for a reaction!"

Jordan, the reason this music resonates with you is that it is raw and unfiltered without the ability at the time to smooth things out and polish the sound. They just didn't have access to the equipment of today where things like that are done.

Very unique sound. I think you'd enjoy it. The Shocking Blue was a one-and-done band. You have just heard a medley of their greatest hit.

Fewer guitars, often that repetitive piano banging like Chubby Checker or Jerry Lee Lewis, and a very simple drum kit. Ringo and drummers in the 60s started featuring, e.g: Sunshine of Your Love. 50s saw them just backup rhythm as the 40s used the guitar.... to keep the beat.

I love this song which I remember growing up in Sydney - going to the first US ice cream shop in Sydney's Kings Cross - it had so many flavours it was eye opening for Sydney at the time - and this song was playing in the shop - fast forward 40 years there is a wonderful You Tube Clip of the lead singer Mariska Veres performing this song at a new year concert January 2006 in her native Netherlands - she was belting it out before a live audience who were singing along and having a wonderful time - it was her last TV performance - she died in December 2006 - so delightful to hear you cover this :)
