  • Advanced placement (AP) programs allow students to earn college credit during high school. But do you need them for grad / med school?
Directly: No. AP courses typically won’t be used to fulfill med school pre-req requirements, and do not raise your college GPA.
Indirectly: It helps! If a college accepts your AP credits, it will reflect on your transcript as hours towards graduation. Also, placing out of low-level college courses allows the freedom to take advanced courses earlier, and you’re more likely to get into classes you want.
Overall, exposure to advanced studies in high school is a good idea. I still use what I learned in classes like Spanish & comp sci often!
