This video might be ancient, but it's worth noting the music in the Dwarf Village and the one occurring during the Monster Hunt segment were incorrect. Not sure why, but they sound corrupted or distorted.
Alright, here's my Tomba story. I was around 3 when my mom bought me this game. I didn't really play it that much but when I was 4, I beat the game because I would play it so much it was ridiculous. I've been playing it recently on PS3 with the original disk I've had for over 10 years now. This game is definitely one of the best I've ever played. The soundtrack is great too.
Douglas VanWormer The soundtrack and animated cutscenes alone are worth playing the game for, let alone its resposive controls and innovative gameplay. Tomba blows most modern games out of the water. 10/10 still to this day.
I remember as a young lad playing this on a demo disc I had. I used you play the demo for hours on end and it had the most immersive demo I have ever come across. Bought the full game a few years ago and finally getting into the game. I am probably about 3/4s into the quest. Definatly in the top 5 of best games ever in my list.
Didn't play the original Tomba, but I did play the heck out the the sequel and still have it for PS1. Never finished the game when I was a kid, but I may do someday.
Yeah the music seems to be glitched out, they should then either reload the download or write a complaint to sony about the music sounding the way it does.
i completely forgot about this game! you brought back so many memories! tbh i never played the actual game, just the demo. but i did play that demo a lot as a kid
Managed to get both Tombi 1 & 2 in good condition (before people started hiking the prices to silly levels) it's a good game. Very quirky/unique, but some quests are as you say, quite out there. I missed a few and needed to use an FAQ.
Forgot to say so, but Mark, you should use the parasol you get from Charles in the mountains to get through the Lava Caves. I see you had a hard time with some of the platforming, and the parasol makes you fall slower so it's far easier to control. :) This is almost a must in the Lava Caves, and I can see by the footage you never got past the Lava Caves. ;)
@InecomCompany Does the game look better in it's digital format or is it a "good looking game for it's time" in digital format? Also, I like the Castlevania/Ghouls-n-Goblins combination but I don't really get the side-quest formula. I hear you have to complete them in order to progress, and I'm guessing there will be backtracking but does that ruin the game? Or am I better off daydreaming about what Tomba is like while listening to Jock Jams Vol 3? Am I ready for this?
I remember playing the demo so much as a kid and just loving this game. I'll have to stop by an old game store and see if I can find it in a bin. I wouldn't mind playing trying out the game in its entirety.
I've barely played this game, but it's always been in the back of my head as one of the more interesting games I've played... I haven't gotten very far in it, and I don't have any idea when, where, or how I played this game, but I finally managed to track it down O: Now I can finally play and experience it without it just being a tiny fragment in my mind.
Do you know the reasoning behind the two different versions of the Sequel, Tombi 2? I own the "proper" 3D one, but looking around on youtube there seems to be a lot more content for some wierd 2D looking version.
Hell yeah. I remember playing the demo years ago and being pretty damn impressed. It seemed like such a unique game, the demo featured a surprising amount of content and it was colourful and interesting to look at.
Looks like they released it on PSN with some annoying bugs. The music sounds wrong. Tomba disappears when he gets hit sometimes? Very strange that it made it on PSN like that.
The european version is called Tombi (and the town music isn't as trippy), I had no idea what was going on playing this as a kid - but I enjoyed every minute of it.
It seems to be compatibility issues with the PS3...I downloaded it from PSN myself recently and the music sounds weird and slow and a little messed up in places. I've also copied Tomba onto my PSP and it sounds absolutely fine when I play it on there.
A friend of mine had the game, I remember trying to complete it with about 4 people It required real teamwork for a few 12 year olds to complete this! and the end was totally worth it by the way =D
I had this game for my Playstation, and was looking for it today. Sadly, I could only find the 15 minute demo of the second game, and the full first game is nowhere to be found. I can honestly say that it was the greatest game I have played in my lifetime, and I cannot express how angry I am that I can't find it. Seeing videos like this really brings back memories. R.I.P. Ryan's Tomba!.
I remember playing the Tomba 2 demo from the PS Jampack demo series. I miss all of the PS1 demos. They felt more fun than the actual games lol(to me of course).
There are occasional alternate tracks throughout the games levels. It's random as far as I can tell and I've only been able to get about 3 or 4. They all sound in that style really, just odd Aphex Twin esque things
Mark check out Klonoa: Door to Phantomile its awesome i downloaded it on ps3 its pretty new to the ps1 download collection and this review certainly makes me wanna play Tomba!
This was literally the only game that brought me and my sister together when we were younger :\ Miss those times so much... It was an incredibly fun and funny game to play :3
I freaking love this game!!!! I remember going in to a video rental place when I was 5 and convinced my dad to let me rent that game (which is something he would never allow because game rentals were too expensive) and I played the hell out of that game and eventually bought the game when the store was getting rid of there ps1 games I paid 5 dollars check ebay to see how much it goes for anyway hope you review tomba 2! too
wow they managed to fuck up the sound in the digital version of this game! i'm so glad I have Tomba 1 & 2 on the original discs. I could not stand the horrible sound remixing!
I too prefer having the stand alone disc as opposed to the digital download.Furthermore these games retail today for as much as $200+ as much as a new gaming system-ridiculous!
Man Tomba was a great game, I remember wanting it so badly and crying my eyes out when my parents told me they couldn't find it anywhere because there wasn't many copies printed. Happiest fucking day of my life on Christmas when I got it :D
Hm, from what I've read it'll decide to run sometimes, but eventually might quit at random. I've heard about issues with cutscenes and such. I dunno, I just know its on the list of unsupported games :P
I have this game, just got it recently and it cost very little.. because I know it's really expensive these days. the first 40 mins are really fun but I thought the game had an autosave feature and I quit and have to start all over.. didn't see a single save point in the game.
Used to play the demo all the time. My nextdoor neighbour was the only person I knew who had it. Was so sad when he moved away cos I never got to beat it. I literally nearly cried and had dreams where he moved back so I could play it
Tomba needs to be in PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale! He could be that surprise character everyone forgot or never knew about akin to Ness, Mr. Game & Watch, and R.O.B in Smash.
I'm a little disappointed you didn't review the actual copy of the game I sent in and instead chose to review the PS3 version. CGRUndertow reviewed the original. :(
I used to play this game every day. My mom used to spend 5 hours on this game alone after helping me with homework. The illest game back in the day
best game i ever played
Seriously
YESS!!!! THE WORLD NEEDS TOMBA 3!!!
This video might be ancient, but it's worth noting the music in the Dwarf Village and the one occurring during the Monster Hunt segment were incorrect. Not sure why, but they sound corrupted or distorted.
Sounds like your music was glitched. Those tracks don’t usually sound that way.

^ This. I never got to play Tombi 1 because it never got sold until Tombi 2 came out :(
Top 5! Jesus. Fair enough then.
Didn't play the original Tomba, but I did play the heck out the the sequel and still have it for PS1. Never finished the game when I was a kid, but I may do someday.
Yeah the music seems to be glitched out, they should then either reload the download or write a complaint to sony about the music sounding the way it does.
L.O.V.E! LOVE this game! STILL so much fun to play 19 years later! Wish we had more games like this these days!
Got it on the demo disc that came with the system in '98 otherwise I would have missed this gem.
Now we shall wait for caddicarus to say "No! It's not Tomba! It's Tombi!"
i completely forgot about this game! you brought back so many memories! tbh i never played the actual game, just the demo. but i did play that demo a lot as a kid
The only complaint I have on your Reviews is that bright red background it really hurts my eyes, but other than that, your Reviews are outstanding.
Managed to get both Tombi 1 & 2 in good condition (before people started hiking the prices to silly levels) it's a good game. Very quirky/unique, but some quests are as you say, quite out there. I missed a few and needed to use an FAQ.
TOMBA! 2 was one of my favorite games ever. I really hope you review it someday.
God i Loved this game it was my favorite game when i was little

LOL the music got fucked up, it's glitchy on yours for some reason or high pitched at parts.
1.) When I read the title I was ecstatic!
2.) Only Awesome Mark can do an awesome review like this for an awesome game!!!!
I remembered that one time when I beaten that Evil Pig with just a sliver of health. :D Ahhh good times.
I only had the demo disc for Tomba. Can’t even remember where that came from...
But I got Tomba 2 and I LOVED it.
Hell yeah. I remember playing the demo years ago and being pretty damn impressed. It seemed like such a unique game, the demo featured a surprising amount of content and it was colourful and interesting to look at.
YES, FINALLY A TOMBA REVIEW! This is one of my favorite platformer games of all time, it's so underrated.
it was about time you reviewed this game!
Looks like they released it on PSN with some annoying bugs. The music sounds wrong. Tomba disappears when he gets hit sometimes? Very strange that it made it on PSN like that.
medievil was also on the demo, right? =)
seems like the music from the mushroom forest and the dwarf village in the video were corrupted.
I remember playing a demo for this constantly when i was younger.
The european version is called Tombi (and the town music isn't as trippy), I had no idea what was going on playing this as a kid - but I enjoyed every minute of it.

Hey Mark would you review XCOM for the ps1 please? I bet you would love it.
Talking about pigs reminds that you should do a review of Hogs of War for ps1. That game was so much fun.
mark your vids just get better and better keep them coming
A friend of mine had the game, I remember trying to complete it with about 4 people It required real teamwork for a few 12 year olds to complete this! and the end was totally worth it by the way =D
I never played this game I wonder if I should give it a try.
I had this game for my Playstation, and was looking for it today. Sadly, I could only find the 15 minute demo of the second game, and the full first game is nowhere to be found. Ryan's Tomba!.
Dude what is up with some of these music tracks lol, I dont recognize the Mushroom Forest or that Dwarf Village music at all
This has to be one of the more nostalgic games ever on the ps1 for me. I loved this, crash 3 and tekken 3, at the same time, lol.
This game was awesome yesterday and is still awesome today.
I remember playing the Tomba 2 demo from the PS Jampack demo series. I miss all of the PS1 demos. They felt more fun than the actual games lol(to me of course).
One of my favorite games ever! Brought me so much joy
I remember playing the demo and loved it but rare to get and on eBay for any collector of the game and ps1 era
I had that. It was a surprisingly long demo. You could do a decent amount of stuff on it.
This and Rally Cross 2 were my first Playstation games.... such good memories.
I loved this game so much when i was younger
I completely missed this! But I recall seeing the screenshot on the back of my PS box. Ah, the good ol' days
still have my orginal copy but its scratched beyond repair, Thank goodness for emulation
So do I. The demo CD also has Ehrgeiz and Klonoa:Door to Phantomile among other games.
I wondering when you would get to this game.
I find the platforming easier if you use the parasol, but I don't see Mark use it at all.
This was literally the only game that brought me and my sister together when we were younger :\ Miss those times so much... It was an incredibly fun and funny game to play :3

I adored Tomba! That game was just so much fun :)
That forest level used to creep me out as a kid. I literally avoid playing the game because of that.
It's actually either or. The games have been printed with Tombi and Tomba as official names.
wow they managed to fuck up the sound in the digital version of this game! i'm so glad I have Tomba 1 & 2 on the original discs. I could not stand the horrible sound remixing!
same.
well atleast i have a rom on the emulaor..
I too prefer having the stand alone disc as opposed to the digital download.Furthermore these games retail today for as much as $200+ as much as a new gaming system-ridiculous!
Tyler I’m playing through Tomba! again on my PS1 and the music is vastly different (much cleaner and tinker-toy) than it is here. Super weird.
I like that part in the game when you do mushrooms and instead of jumping like you would in Mario all the character does is have a laugh 😀
I love tomba and tomba2 Soooooo much I remember playing them on my ps1 and I still have both to this day
Man Tomba was a great game, I remember wanting it so badly and crying my eyes out when my parents told me they couldn't find it anywhere because there wasn't many copies printed. Happiest fucking day of my life on Christmas when I got it :D
Never got passed that first levle all those years ago
That isnt the origional music on those levels btw.
Hm, from what I've read it'll decide to run sometimes, but eventually might quit at random. I've heard about issues with cutscenes and such. I dunno, I just know its on the list of unsupported games :P
This game is so unique for having you also move on the third access even as a side-scroller.
Use to play this one a lot back in '98, it was known as Tombi! in Europe.
I have this game, just got it recently and it cost very little.. because I know it's really expensive these days. the first 40 mins are really fun but I thought the game had an autosave feature and I quit and have to start all over.. didn't see a single save point in the game.
5:30 "the music is bizarre" = shitty emulator fail
what about Metal Gear Solid, any of the Crash Bandicoot, and many others?
This was on the playstation magazine demo disc 37. Those were the days :D
I always saw pictures of this cover when i was younger.... the graphics are really beautiful tho!
One minute in and already a better review than the one by CGRundertow
Your Mum played it too? Awesome! My Nan used to love games, specifically Zelda and puzzle games.
The Room quote FTW! You deserve a popsicle.
Seriously one of my favorite games and best games ever created. Both RPG elements and platformer.
I remember playing the demo of this game, I played that same 1st level over and over and now I finally get to play the full game after al these years
This game was awesome! Why don't they make'em like this anymore?
Same here, I had the demo but was too young & poor to be able to buy it :-(
Used to play the demo all the time. My nextdoor neighbour was the only person I knew who had it. Was so sad when he moved away cos I never got to beat it. I literally nearly cried and had dreams where he moved back so I could play it
I remember playing this game lots when I was a kid, it was so damn hard :(
I remember playing this on an old PS1 demo disc but i never actually got the full version which sucks because this looks great.
Mark did this video to make up for Derek's terrible review. Methinks Derek felt the wrath of a Nintendo Power issue smack down on his face
Tomba needs to be in PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale! He could be that surprise character everyone forgot or never knew about akin to Ness, Mr. Game & Watch, and R.O.B in Smash.
A hell of a lot better than CGRundertows review of this game
This game didn't sell very well Tomba 2 killed the company off shame really it was an amazing game
Tomba 2 didn't kill the company, the company killed itself.
@@629O actually sony did..
Someone Please Allow GameGrumps to play this!
How do I get 'Playstation 1 games for Playstation 3'?
I'm a little disappointed you didn't review the actual copy of the game I sent in and instead chose to review the PS3 version. CGRUndertow reviewed the original. :(
Tomba 1 and 2 are just a masterpiece games , they need a new sequel but its too bad that the game company are no longer running
Tomba and Tomba 2 are my 2 favorite games ever. the 90's, my youth!
Me too. I found the game complete at a flea market this month for 1 euro. I was so glad :)
Well that was the game you are on about.
The side scrolling shoot em up is G-Darius ;)
I was only to play this game recently when it came out on psn. I played the demo way too many times.
I remember playing the demo of this game a lot. It was a lot of fun... and it's still expensive. :/
me too i hope. my coby is still somewhere. probly in sme box where my psone is.
How the hell do you save?
