  • Today, let's dig into a long-term review of the Boox Tab Ultra C, a new color Kaleido-based E-Ink tablet from Boox. I think this is going to be the first truly compelling color ink tablet for productivity. Should you upgrade from an existing Boox Note Air 2 Plus or Boox Tab Ultra?

I need it to write notes, store documents, read books, read on line, search information online...

I'm a writer and have been wanting to upgrade from my Samsung s8+ to this tablet so that I will be able to use SPECIFICALLY Dabble Writer but also not have to charge it every other day. I'm sad that the other options don't provide a keyboard case, because that was a big selling point for me (not lugging around a keyboard like I currently do). This video helped me with some of my questions and I'll be sure to leave an update when I get mine!

Hi Brandon just run in to your channel and it's awesome. Tks a lot for the well precise informative videos.
Been thinking between going on the note air plus, lighter, thinner, more paper like writing, cheaper, compare to the TUC, better GPU,colour, . greater ppi, camera.
My use case is as a grad student writing my theses, reading pdf papers, note taking (preferably by typing and screen capture), writing in Google docs, moving between articles and also some note taking.
What do you recommend between the two? Any
other is preferred? Need a smooth sinc to drive
and legging could be fustrating for me.

I am a student and I just put in an order for this device. I currently use a Galaxy Tab S6 for textbooks and notes which has been fine for the past couple of years but the draw of a color eink device was too much! I will use both devices in tandem now. Boox will be used for notes and texbooks and the tab s6 for video lectures. Both use the same wacom tech so I can use the pen on both which is nice.

I borrowed the reMarkable when I was doing on field inspections and it was incredible. Having all my notes already digital and sorted into folders is a million times easier to manage than a notebook. Also, having the drawings on a tablet instead of a arch D size paper is so much more easy to carry. Especially on windy days. When I originally tried to look at a drawing on my laptop, the glare was too much and the clamshell made it hard to carry around. It was faster to export the drawing into a PDF and transfer it to the reMarkable than to squint at a glossy LCD screen. Now I feel it's a must to have an e-ink tablet on field.
I'm looking at this instead of the reMarkable because it would be nice to read manga as well. Having Android OS makes this possible. Also, nice to have colours for drawing mark-ups.

Thanks for the great review! If the main use cases are note taking, sketching, doing math and brain storming which one would you pick the Supernote Ax5 or the Tab UltraC? Quick availability, bug free experience and good writing feel are important for me. Also how difficult is to get articles to read and annotate on the Supernote?

    • @BrandonKBoswell
      @BrandonKBoswell  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Thank you. For me, it all comes down to writing feel. SuperNote is a gel pen on a pad of paper, and the Tab Ultra C is a pen on a single sheet of paper on a hard desk surface. Which of these you prefer will make the biggest difference in which of these devices you prefer. Both devices have Google Drive, so you can drop a PDF into Drive to get documents over wirelessly.

I had the same feeling about skipping the keyboard cover because I love my HHKB Pro Hybrid Type-S.
I really want an e-ink tablet that lets me read and write (I hear the Note Air 2 has a more paper-like writing surface?), particularly on Obsidian, so I came VERY close to getting one of these, and it would be my first non-kindle e-ink device. But I didn't because I have a hunch we'll see a Note Air C in the coming months, which I think might be the near-perfect tool for my needs.

Hi, FYI the keyboard is ok when you are sitting at a desk.
If you try to use it on your lap, mine looses connectivity from time to time.
I wished they had taken notes on the keyboard folio design and had taken a sleeve out of the ReMarkables playbook whos keyboard is IMHO a much better implementation.
In particular when you are not using the TUC with the keyboard. You are resting the device on the keys or you hand is on the keys when you hold it. The ReMarkable keyboard slides away a much more sophisticated and elegant solution.

1:42 - frontlight not backlight, right? Very solid content! Question: what’s the difference between the Tab Ultra and Tab Ultra C besides color? I’m color blind and have no real need for color, and I’d like to have the brighter/whiter screen of the Tab Ultra unless the C is a better device for reasons beside color. Thank you!

    • @BrandonKBoswell
      @BrandonKBoswell  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Sorry I always slip on that. It’s a front light like all e-ink devices. I still think you’ll prefer the screen density of the Ultra C. It’s 300ppi vs 227 on the Tab Ultra.

If Onyx were to release the kernel in the future to create a custom ROM or, alternatively, an ARM-based OS with a Linux foundation, it would be fantastic! There are already a thousand distributions out there, and if they added UEFI support as a bootloader, that would be top-notch! I'd buy 100 of these right away, hahaha XD. I say this because spending 650 euros on a tablet/ebook/PC when we know that display technology will change, and Android updates will eventually stop, is a difficult choice to justify. Instead, if they offered something more, we would have the added value of being able to contribute to a large community and have a consistently upgradable product that retains its value over time. I think Onyx should consider this perspective. More popularity would mean the product becomes well-known, reaching a broader audience. Today, few people are willing to spend 650 euros on a tablet; they think twice. But if they could get a device that remains useful and upgradable for many years, it would be a much more appealing choice. From my point of view, if I have to spend 650 euros, I'd rather do it for a laptop than for a device that becomes obsolete and unusable after just 3 years.

    • @miavaughn2393

@@quickscopebro97Because UNLIKE a pure ereader, it is a fully functioned android device. Which needs security updates at least, just like any OS, pc or phones or tablets. Its connecting to the internet, so it needs security updates, and it shouldnt be used on the internet after that point. Also, just old versions of android lead to eventual play store incompatibility. Within a few generations of android, certain apps wont be able to be downloaded. Ive experienced this many times just on 3 year old and older phones.
Obviously you could still use this as a simple ereader to just read books, but thats not why youd buy a high end boox.
Custom ROMs can allow the community to update the software of the device and keep it running to its fullest for FAR longer.
Its unfortunate we dont see basically any eink tablets having custom roms available.

That said, I don't want to spend more money on something I won't use. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The work flow I want to develop is using OneNote with a planner/goal/notes template I bought. It is slow starting but I think I will get it. Bought Tab Ultra C Pro . Nothing is Pro about this thing. Writing experience is VERY BAD. Noteshelf 3 on Ipad is years a head ; better response , much better letancy , much better accuracy , much much better app.
I use sensetivity on , 0.7 thicknes , fountain pen on the noteshelf 3 on my Ipad as a normal handwriting and the results are much more precise and easier to write and much better print results then the Boox.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY - BOTH IPAD PEN ON NOTESHELF 3 AND E- INK DEVICE AND SEE FOR YOUSELF !!!

If you need something to just replace the paper then Remarkable is the best

Horrible idea - make undo and redo by taping 🙂

Typing in languages with special characters (àöñ etc) isn't great though, not very intuitive.

As frustrating as some things about the reMarkable are (it won't even show you a clock!), this doesn't seem like a good enough device for writing unfortunately.

I always end up back on my reMarkable when it is time to focus.

about the writing experience, you always talk about rm2 3finger trick. But you never to Turley to learn orther brand skills. To watch some boox lovers vlog . You will know when you wrote words or some sharps ,after that if you want cancel that youcan just use the pen to cross the item serval times on it .that item will deleted.its habit like what we do on paper ,we write something wrong we cross the word several times. I thought it better than your 3 finger , you can just use one pen one hand . The way you talk sometime not fair . You learn rm3 before you do the review . But you didnt spent enough time to learn other brand unfortunately.

There is lot of people out there waiting for a color e ink laptop.
I may still buy a slim remarkable for math calculus training and writing on the side.

That would be interesting, but I don’t expect to see one anytime soon.

A pure notepad on the side may still make sense, depends of the work process.
