ALWAYS detangle each braid as you take it out. I would recommend putting oil at the base where the build up is and massage it out with your fingers or use a rat tail comb. By putting water on the build up without detangling, you’re basically creating dreadlocks
Yes, I always put oil at the base before I take out the braid. This allows the dirt to pull away from the hair. I use my fingers to detangle each braid as I go, and then use a comb.
Congrats on being a new mom! Just remember, you may be going through postpartum shedding. So that may also be a reason for your edges being a little weaker than normal. Vitamins, water, decent diet, massages with castor oil, and patience should bring back your edges in due time 🤗.
Littl tip. Next time detangle your hair prior to shampooing. That’s why you had little dreads, the shed hair entangled itself when you shampooed. Always derange your hair first. Less shedding drastically. I was waiting like oh no!!! She about to have Locs all over her head lol
I took my braids out and couldn't detangle because my hair was too hard from the product...so I put conditioner on the hair put a plastic cap on for a while...then tried to detangle I had the worst knots ever...so couldn't detangle ...no choice but to wash...i loss half of my hair...just awful...and I knew to detangle but couldn't.
Omgg that’s why this always happens to me, I used to wonder why they would get tangled when I’m shampooing but I tried detangling from the roots whilst I was taken down my braids and I could comb through easily and lost less hair, good tip!!
I would love to see an update. I had the same experience just after having my braids in for 8 weeks. The hairdresser put to much tension when braising, pulling my hair out by the root. Using a lot of wax made my hair stick and tangle like crazy. I spend 6 hours detangling before washing. My hair is now slowly recovering. So it’s not only how long you keep your braids, but also how they install them. Sometimes it’s doing more damage than protecting your hair.
Right bc I've keep (knotless) braids up for this long before and didn't have this problem. However, this time the way they were installed caused them to dread up. Ik it was going to happen to bc of how they were installed the other times i got them. Previously a different braider did them and she actually braided my hair neatly and not so carefree with mixing my hair in a knot. Its probably not making sense but if you see it you would know what i mean lol.. i havent took them down yet but i hope its not all that bad.. mine are 4 months old as well this time 😫
Yeah that looks more like postpartum shedding than anything. You’re talking about 4 months of built up shed hair on top of postpartum shedding, and not detangling before you got in the shower. Girl lol but really I hope that you were able to find some stuff to help you grow your edges back! ❤️
I learned the hard way the first time I got braids. It took forever to detangle. Now, I take my braids down in sections, detangle, put in leave-in conditioner and oil. I put my hair in big plaits. The next day, I take them out, wash and deep condition. Still need to detangle and blow dry in sections. Good luck to you!
I was screaming all throughout the video😭 the 4months old braids, which I understand cuz first of all you had your baby and getting braids is expensive.. But girl… when you started washing the hair without detangling it first I screamed 😭 It’s at the moment I knew, your hair was gonna suffer😩 Please just detangle your hair with conditioner or oils first to remove the build up also. Only washed after you remove all tangles and knots. We will never know if this was post partum shedding because your technique and the way you treated your hair throughout the hairstyle could’ve also caused this.. It’s also not the braids themselves, they are a great protective style unless it was installed too tight, which would’ve caused too much tension on your edges and gave you allopecia 🤷🏾♀️
I'm so curious why do people when they take their braids down. They go straight to putting shampoo in their hair . instead of rehydrating their hair and just putting conditioner and do co-wash for a couple of days and then finally shampoo it. Well that's how I do mine I don't go straight down with shampoo not until maybe the fourth or fifth day
I'm so sorry this happened to you. I had to come to the comments but I see just about Everyone already told you. Well, hard lesson learned I guess. I once spent hours detangling someone's soft hair and pulling out knots strand by strand because they made some of the same mistakes you did. I wish I coulda been there for you 💕
When I was taking down braids or twists, I would finger detangle and comb out each braid with water and conditioner on my hair. There would be dirt/sweat/shed hair build-up from having the style in for a few months, so I obviously wanted to remove that before washing. I wouldn't rely on my shampoo to take out all the build-up.
A couple of years ago I saw my aunt and all her hair was cut off, I asked her what happened and she explained that her hair got so knotted after taking braids out and washing it immediately that she had to cut it all off. I could not understand how her hair could possibly be that knotted because I have never seen hair knot up like what she was describing until watching this video. this is exactly what she was describing to me; I wouldn’t wish this on anyone 🤦🏾♀️.
Same thing happened to me when i got box braids years ago. I was ignorant about proper take down and detangling...just shampooed after removing the hair. Took 6 hours to detangle the hair and I lost like a 1/4 of the volume smh. Never again
Girl I felt your pain throughout this video, I went through the same thing last year, I was so happy for you that you finally was able to detangle it all out, also congratulations on your baby, so cute.. ❤
Hey sis, I cut my waist length dreads 1 year ago and I'm using box braids as protective style and length retention. I braid my own hair so I'm able to try take the edges down every 4 weeks to prevent damage. I just massage and repart the edges and then rebraid. I wish I could do wigs but they make me itch too much. Beautiful hair sis and I love your baby's name so cute. She is also adorable.
So sorry 4 u. Just watch Videos about detangling hair. It was very hurting to See Ur struggle and all that hair loss. I used to Do the same, but im happy i learned how to take care of my hair. My hair is thriving.

I have locs and after 3 months my hair started budding. You went 4 months, you might as well have continued your loc journey 😅… on another note, I had post partum shedding as well but my edges fully grew back about a year later.
I cringed throughout the whole video omg. 😭😭 Everyone knows after taking down a protective style you detangle your hair with conditioner that has extreme slip before applying shampoo to it. And the way you shampooed did not help. You gotta section and shampoo. And with you just having a baby added postpartum shedding on top of it. I hope you revived it sis cause I was crying for you watching those chunks come out 😩😩

@@Blackoleander623 yes same. Especially all these resources we have now with TH-cam and other things. Gotta treat your hair gentle so the flourishing can be beautiful.
With thinner and weaker edges you shouldn't go longer than 6-8weeks. Also you should do sections bigger, that also help in protecting your edges. Yea I only like doing my braids becuz other folks be extra with the pulling and tightness on your edges. Like totally disrespectful 😒
This happened to me from the braids being to tight but I grew the hair back and now every thing is good I even did a big chop this why I only do my hair cause I’m scared to loose my edges and never get them back
Y’all I just got 3 inches in 3 weeks I’m super excited!!!! Omg I was having a rough day week actually I took a couple down and 3 inches I always measure my hair it was 9 in the back now it’s 12 I gonna rebraid the hair and keep it in for 1-2 months just imagine how long it’s gonna be braided up that long I use jbco with peppermint & almond oil in a spray bottle I also use rice water with rosemary I just started the rosemary a couple days ago so it’s not cause of the rosemary but I put cloves oil in with my rice water & also virgin hair fertilizer, than I made my own little butter by mixing jbco grease the oil jbco butter African shea butter , virgin hair fertilizer, my peppermint/almond oil , cloves oil I use all that at once every day my hair can take the rice water because I’m doubling moisturizing my hair after and also I was my hair 4 days to a week sometime 2 weeks and keep it braided
Congrats! I definitely had shedding and a smaller lil balder patch that I have been trying to grow back in. Let me know what works for you? I’m 2 kids in so I had the shedding twice
I'd like to suggest some tips. I know alot of ppl might say im wrong but thats ok it's what works for me. I would detangle on dry hair only oil or grease, get a super sharp metal toothpick and work through the knots as best as you can starting from ends to root. My hair is 4 months old as well. I intentionally left them to let my hair grow but i was concerned from the beginning bc of how the edges was installed. My hair has dreaded also, im praying its not that bad but idk. Im scared bc this the healthiest my hair has been before the braids. I don't know how to knotless and wanted to save money but i shouldve got the edges re-done 😩
What was your care routin while the braids where in? Because mine were in for 6 months and I grew 4 1/2 inches of hair and washed + deep condition every 3 weeks and this didn’t happen 🥺 I mean it dreaded a little but that came out easily with weighing it down with water and conditioner and I have beyond 4c hair with my edges. So sorry this happened
Getting ready to take my knotless out now. I go to an African braiding shop as well but I tell them to leave my edges out. Also, I realize I am a year late to this video and like everyone has already commented, it looks like you had postpartum shedding. My edges came out with my baby too. SN:Are you from Chicago? 😅 I am! Hairloss is devastating. Iost alot of hair from my thyroid issues. I started taking pure msm and vitamin C powders mixed together in juice a month ago and I can already see the roots of my hair thickening up. Using unrefined cold pressed coconut oil with a few drops of rosemary essential oils and massage your scalp. Leave in on and coat all the hair cover with a plastic cap and leave it on overnight. Your hair will come back just be extra gentle for now.
I would like to know something? In this 4 months how many times did you wash your hair? Or it was 4 months without actually washing it?🤔🤔 Sorry for my ignorance 💔
I was hopeful that you had already detangled it before you washed it but I was wrong yeah the dead hair that's already in your head it's still there so you'd have to comb that out because It just sits there The braids have not been allowing your hair to fall out naturally it's just there so you're basically turning it into like a dreadlock unintentionally
I remember those days, but I would have micro braids. I would detangle before washing my hair and use a comb for each individual section. Whew chillay! I felt bad for you😂😂😂
You never shampoo your hair after taking out braids or dreads or anything without combing out the buildup on those brave because the water is all it's going to do is lock it in title
Your take down was a whole complete mess mam . You never wet and shampoo matted hair with knots . You should have hot oil treated and unknotted your hair and sectioned before shampooing. Your hair not sectioned on the shampoo process too
Stop leaving your hair in for so long. I would love to leave my hair in for a month... but 3 weeks is the max. I don't use fake hair. But not every one can wear that heavy @zz hair. It's not cute when you just lost a clump of hair. It's telling you to stop.
Btw. Natural twist will grow your hair. And when it grows long enough put them in a bun if you are a professional. Never get tired of doing your hair. It's pre0ious. Change your way of thinking.
@@rashida7777 good advice! I wore a super tight bun for a decade and as soon as I saw my edges thinning, I immediately stopped. But then I just neglected my hair for years after that; it was dry with lots of shedding. So this year (now that I’m 40), I decided it made no sense to be kind to my skin and nails, but hateful toward my hair, lol. And now that I’m twisting, oiling, massaging, finger detangling, monitoring, and washing in sections (and without dreading the wash day like I used to), I can see my hair is so much happier. It really does require a shift in your mindset and I feel so appreciative that my thick hair has held on despite my years of abuse and neglect. I’m hopeful that I’ll see some length retention for the first time in years!
@@wavejackson1112 The same. Started loving myself. My whole self! That includes my hair. We weren't taught to pay special attention to it like other races. Theirs grows long because of attention (positive) and routine. I am now regimented with taking care of my hair. It is like a flower... it thrives with positive attention. That is why my hair is shoulder blade length. The longest it has ever been... and growing!
@@rashida7777 Yes, I agree on all points!! Mine is "APL"...I can't tell if it's growing yet since it's kind of been this length for years (due to neglect), but regardless, I'm trying to focus on health over length. Girl, don't mind me saying this, it comes from a place of love (because I have been in a position where I didn't know how to take care of my hair) BUT your techniques here are HORRIBLE, period. ALWAYS do a thorough detangling before hopping in the shower either with a pre-poo oil, Aloe Vera Gel or deep conditioner (on damp hair). Get as much shed hair out as possible. In the shower, start with conditioner, especially when you have left a protective style in for too long. Detangle your hair thoroughly - first with fingers and then with a wet brush/denman. THEN shampoo with a clarifying shampoo, look for a clarifying shampoo that'll do a thorough clean without stripping you hair or making it feel like straw. Then go again with a conditioner/deep conditioner after and continue with your styling products out of the shower.
ALWAYS detangle each braid as you take it out. I would recommend putting oil at the base where the build up is and massage it out with your fingers or use a rat tail comb. By putting water on the build up without detangling, you’re basically creating dreadlocks

Postpartum shedding 🙄
You have to put less braiding hair on the edges and leave most of those edges out
Next time u should lather the hair with oil the second u take one braid out… like comb the little piece out!
I did my daughter twist her natural hair she doesn't want her hair down cause all the girls wearing natural twist she's 12 almost 13
I thought knotless were only great for the most 3 weeks🤷🏽♀️
Welp it’s to late I didn’t get that message 😩
Why u can't believe it u said u didn't have them to begin with but u braided it anyway 😢
Your hair is gone because you tide the braids to tightly. It used to happen to me alot
Next time detangle and remove build up first before washing
That solution is the death of your hair after you already stripped it
😢😢😢😢that's crazy
There was way too much hair on your edges they should have combined it to the braids behind it
This is scary maybe it's time for a take down
You ,left them in way tooo long ❤
I had some faux locs in my hair for 3 months. I kept rewrapping it at the roots to look fresh and it broke my hair off really bad on one side .
Repent for Kingdom of God is near!
Your take down was a whole complete mess mam . You never wet and shampoo matted hair with knots . You should have hot oil treated and unknotted your hair and sectioned before shampooing. Your hair not sectioned on the shampoo process too
Poor hair 😣
If I can care for a plant, I should at least take care of my hair now that I have knowledge and a positive mindset.
You probably lost your edges from giving birth. The same thing happened to my mom. She lost all of her edges after she had her baby
How old is the baby now.
@@angieang26 she's 3
@@legacysdreamlife9021 how old are you.
@@angieang26 20 and my mom is 39
@@legacysdreamlife9021 so she had you when she was 19. Is she married now.

Then go again with a conditioner/deep conditioner after and continue with your styling products out of the shower.
this video was so stressful to watch
