    I carry a small nylon pot scraper to get the bits out because my spoon takes forever and I happened to have one hanging around my kitchen that perfectly fits the curve at the bottom of my pot. And, yes, I drink the greywater.

    We learned "human sumption" techniques at Philmont Scout Ranch and I've done this ever since. The food is food you just ate, and this makes 100% efficient use of your food and water. Yeah, it's a little diluted at times, but it is exactly how you say....Leaves no trace and no packing spent food that gets nasty after a few days. The key is to eat everything you cook and scrape it down to almost nothing before you are done. Then do the water boil 1-2 times and then you can just rinse the pot and disperse a few ounces of clean water into the wind. Voila! clean pot.

    Great idea! It's the same food you just ate dilluted with some water that you were going to drink anyways. See that was always one of my problems: water is one of the bottleneck things in backpacking, because there is only that much you can bring with yourself. And while I certainly don't want to leave too much of a trace, pouring out some organic material with water isn't a problem for me. The problem is that I would need that water later on to drink. Now with this method I don't have to worry about that and if you are not like me, then you don't have to worry about your footprint left behind either. Thanks!

    • @ChefCorso
      @ChefCorso  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad this is helpful for you. I personally don't like throwing bits into the bushes to follow leave no trace, so I'll just take it down and gets rid of the problem for me and nature.

    No problem with anyone that wants to drink the dish water. Having said that, discarding a cup of food impregnated water in the forest is harming nothing. If you compost your waste food at home you know this.

    • @PersonaDevBlog
      @PersonaDevBlog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. If you cast out your water you are fine. Pouring it on the ground isn't such a great idea though, especially if next to a water source.

    • @rumidude
      @rumidude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well I compost at home and I understand all that is behind composting. But that is at home. Casting away grey water attracks animals to the vicinity of campsites, and that is not a good thing. With the growth of backpacking and increasing pressure on backcountry campsites, the paractice of casting away grey water and similar is an old practice that needs to stop.

    • @sramm
      @sramm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rumidude I enjoy your videos and have no problem with your views. You didn't appear to be near a campsite so the issue of attracting animals to the forest with your mouthful of water seemed a bit extreme.

  • @Oldsparkey
    @Oldsparkey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why not drink it , after all you ate the food that was cooked in there. When backpacking water is a commodity you do not want to waste or just toss away. The old story , One pot cooking ...Make oatmeal in the morning , eat it. Add water to the pot , boil it and make coffee , drink it. Rinse with a little more water and drink it. Do the same with your other meals. After you get home wash the pot.

    Maybe somebody can change my mind, but for me that's virtue signaling and kind of disgusting. Dropping some water with biodegradable liquid food waste in a bush can't be a problem at all (the solid food waste can still be put in the trash bag if you worry about other people). I disagree with you trying to set a new standard.
    If I'd be radical, before even thinking about drinking that, I'd first consider the remote origin of some ingredients, its packaging, veganism, the manufacturing process of everything including the clothes and equipment, the options for recycling, or the use of a vehicule to reach the place...
    It's kind of like the same thing for the ultralight backpacking trend, before cutting in half my tooth brush or warming my meal in my underpants, I'd consider becoming fitter and stronger.
    Such radical "leave no trace" mindset, similar in its excesses to the obsession for ultra-ligh gear, seems to become an ideology, almost a cult. Its ideal is to be an invisible ghost that flies and don't even release CO2 naturally, everything else is considered a sin. But as long as you "compensate" by virtue-signaling like a devotee it's ok... And this mindset seems to impact moslty people who live in an urban environment and who are annoyed by promiscuity. Then they all walk on the same trails and still complain about promiscuity, while paradoxically increasing it with some pointless rules and standards.
    I personally tend to leave as less trace as it is reasonable, but I believe the "leave no trace" obsession becomes so biaised that it will end up simply forbiding people to go out into the nature at some point.
