It's kind of sad, but I remember reading about the guy who wrote this script, when he was Smalls age he and his family moved into a new neighbourhood, that was pretty heavily populated by Latino families. He said him and his brother had a lot of trouble fitting in, as they were white, and the local kids used to bully them a lot. He wrote Benny as an example of a kid he wished had existed in that neighbourhood back then, as a way to try and heal that trauma of his early childhood.
How racist was these kids? How can you strike a ball from a black kid? That's racist

Kindness is the answer. Benny is So Cool because he's KIND. What the author needed in his neighborhood was someone that was kind to a new kid. It's a beautiful lesson and why this movie is great to watch as a kid and show your kids. Benny is cool, because he is a kind person. He's good to his friends and good to new friends.

Fun Fact: Grown Up Benny was played by Mike Vitar's real life older brother Pablo P. Vitar but sadly passed away in 2008.
To this day, the final scene always makes me tear up. I was 10 when it came out in 93. It’s a reminder of childhood innocence and pure friendships. My friend mark and I went to see it when it came out, and when he got married in 2015, both of us broke into tears when gave each the “thumbs up” before he said his vows to his future wife.
As a grown man, I appreciate it even more

The Bad News Bears came out in 1976 and the reboot/remake came out in 2005...both are great movies btw (Walter Matthau & Billy Bob Thornton are great as Buttermaker)....

James Earl Jones' character knew Ruth from playing in the old "Negro Leagues" and they would sometimes play the teams in the Major Leagues (New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers etc.) This was way before 1947 when Jackie Robinson broke the "color barrier" by playing in the Majors.🙂
Speaking of the Negro Leagues, one of the major knocks against players of Ruth's era is that they didnt play against the best Negro League players, but Babe Ruth was still dominant when he played against them in exhibition games. Just a fun fact that I think is interesting.

I was that kid that wanted to sit my dad down and show him cinema masterpieces. Often times....he brushed me aside. But I showed him this film....and he laughed and we connected. He looked at me and smiled as he said that he hasn't been reminded of what it was like to be a kid for so long.

I remember when this movie came out in 1993, I was working at the movie theater. I remember thinking the year it was set, 1962 was ancient history…for a 19 year old…now the movie itself is almost as long ago and it seems like yesterday.
The reference to Goofus in the early scene where the kid goes to get the ball and says to himself "Don't be a goofus" most likely refers to the comic strip Goofus and Gallant, which ran for decades in a kids magazine called Highlights. It was a two panel strip with one for Goofus and one for Gallant. Goofus always did the wrong thing, Gallant the right thing, so as to contrast their morality and character, with Gallant obviously as the model for a good person and Goofus the immoral buffoon you should not want to be.

I got to meet the majority of those guys at the New Mexico Comic Expo 2021. I was tattooing there and my boss tattooed them. Ya-ya is a beast! Dude is built massive. I watched all the 90s kids sports movies - Rookie of the Year, Little Giants, Angels in the Outfield - and Sandlot is the only one that actually holds up as a legitimate movie.

The size of the dog in the earlier scenes is of course the over exaggerated imagination of the kids and display perfectly those kinda childhood lores we all had growing up and how we ran wild with them whether it be a big dig like this an old borded house in the town thats “haunted” whatever the case may be. This movie is the epitome of summer childhood for most North American boys the last century or so

Watched a special screening of this at Fenway Park on the jumbotron. All the lights were off except for the movie. What a great experience.
What I love about this movie is how it plays out as a 10 year old would relay the story! The dog, his lack of ball skills…every scene is as the story would be told through their eyes!

There’s something about Baseball movies that just make it feel more nostalgic. Field of Dreams, The Natural, Bull Durham, Major League. All 10/10 films including this one.
I'm going to be 36 in July and this is still my favorite baseball movie of all time. I watch it every time it comes on because it brings me back to a better time.

Growing up playing non-league baseball, I will say I relate hard to the detail of them not always having an actual ball to play. Except, we use to play with tennis balls, so that we wouldn't break any neighbor's windows. Tennis balls are a lot easier to bust open though. Anyways, as a kid with no money, sometimes you had to scrounge for change in order to buy a new tube of 3.

There is a girl version of Stand by Me called Now and Then, it is one of my all time favorite movies growing up. Now and Then, Practical Magic, Little Woman, and Miss Congeniality were the movies my mom and I would watch together whenever we had a mommy daughter day. They will forever have a special place in my heart because of that.

When I was 6-10 years old, one of my friends lived next to an empty lot at the end of the neighborhood. We'd all ride our bikes to his house with our gloves on our handle bars and just spent hours playing baseball until the street lights came on and then we'd ride our bikes home or if there was a tie in the game we'd play until our moms called on the land line.
The late 90s to early 00s was simpler. Dial up internet, myspace, ebaums world. TH-cam didn't exist until I was a teenager and even then no one knew what it really was.
This is hands down one of my favorite reactions and comments from you both.... loved this so much! I have two brothers that played baseball and football growing up. I remember watching them playing with the neighborhood kids in the school field on weekends... those were great moments . This really takes me back.... like in "Stand By Me" I still have three really good friends from my "Jr. High/Middle school" years.... none of us live in the same state anymore but I have visited two of them since they moved away and we all call to touch base and see what's up.

I liked that they didn't make Bill the stereotypical deadbeat stepdad. He was kinda distant at first but that's usually how it goes in those situations.

This movie makes me flashback amd get emotional. I had some neighborhood friends and we did this same thing. Before i had even seen this movie for the first time. That field is now a house in the spot we played. The grassy piece of land. No days the rest of my life will be like my gradeschool years. Its been all down hill since. That baseball that JEJ gives the kids signed by all the ‘27 Yankees is a HUGE deal. For those who don’t know, the ‘27 Yankees had a famous lineup, known as Murderer’s Row. It consisted of Earle Combs, Mark Koenig, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Muesel, and Tony Lazzeri. It was called Murderer’s Row because those were the first six hitters on the roster, and the lineup was so deadly that by the time those six were up and done at bat, the Yankees were up by 4-6 runs. They’re widely considered one of the best lineups in baseball history. They were almost unstoppable.
Boy what I would give to have an authentic Murderer’s Row baseball.

Also, the movie is inspired by David Mickey Evans's real-life childhood experience. When he was a kid, he, his kid brother Scott, and their mother grew up in Pacoima, a San Fernando community north of LA. Their real dad (Wasn't dead like in the movie) ran off and started a new family of his own. Their stepdad (The guy their mom married recently) was a horrible person and constantly bullied them. Even worse, the two were also bullied by the kids at school and weren't even allowed to join in with the other kids, even when they were constantly kicked out of the house to go out and make friends. During one baseball season, Scott tried to play with a group of older boys playing baseball, but they refused, claiming that he was too little and too young to play. But when they struck the ball over an enormous brick wall and into a backyard, Scott thought he could win over them by getting it back for them. When the boys boosted Scott over the wall and into a backyard, there was a giant German Shepherd/Doberman/Pinscher mixed dog actually named Hercules. When Scott grabbed the drool-covered ball, he ran to a nearby tree and started climbing, but as soon as he did, the dog woke up, broke the chain, jumped up, and bit poor Scott badly in the thigh and the kids STILL REFUSED to let Scott play even after all that. What mean bullies they were! Anyways, Scott's mom found out what had happened from a nearby kid who witnessed it and picked up Scott and drove him to a hospital.
He did make a film that covered what really happened to him and his brother (with a fantastical edge to it) called Radio Flyer. Really depressing film.

Yes! One of my childhood favourites, along with My Girl and others. So nostalgic for me. The use of "kid logic" is so accurate in this. And I love that this doesn't end with "the big game." That's always the easy way out. This movie is about these kids who love baseball, not a baseball movie about a bunch of kids. There's a difference and this movie gets that. It's so politically incorrect, I can't help but smile when I think about some of the dialogue. "You play ball like a GIRL!" You'd never get away with that today, but it's so accurate of guys of that age. It's like A Christmas Story in that it really understands kids and how they think, without being the least bit condescending. That's hard to do, especially in movies these days. Look at American Pie and the gross out movies of the last 20 years. While I think they're hilarious, those movies clearly don't like their characters. The writers of this movie love these kids and they're honest, but still take them seriously, in a way that don't feel manipulative.
I dunno, American Pie was pretty funny lol...I wouldn't say the movie doesn't like its characters haha. But to each their own. The Sandlot is a classic and one of my comfort movies ♥
@@RedRoseSeptember22 I did too, but you can't say the writer has much respect for the characters in that movie. Nobody really has any redeeming qualities. They're just plot devices designed to movie things along and make asses of themselves. I'm not saying that's a bad thing at all, and sometimes you just want a movie that will make you laugh as long as you can disengage your brain for 95 minutes. There are some R rated teen movies that I really enjoy, like Role Models and I actually prefer the 2nd Pie movie to the first. I thought the ending was BS. You've got these guys basically being guys, trying to get laid with no commitment, and then they have an ending where Oz is trying to get with Heather, like all his buddies, but somehow it's all sweet and romantic all of a sudden? He's been trying to get with her under false pretences the entire movie, and by the end we're supposed to forget all that and act like she's not getting screwed over. I'm not the moral police, but I will be the consistency police if I have to be. Either be a shameless gross out comedy, or be a romantic comedy. There are exceptions to that. Some of the Judd Apatow movies have managed to pull off being gross out and romantic, but it's tricky and I didn't buy that in American Pie. It's not a bad movie and I laugh at it, but is it a great comedy? I don't think so. And until the end of the movie, it isn't trying to be. But trying to wedge in a romantic ending to a movie that was everything but that didn't work for me. It's a minor detail, but I hate movies that try to moralize or justify their movie, like they're targeting evangelical christians. I don't like being lied to in a movie. If you're going to be a shameless gross-out movie, be that. Don't wedge in romantic where it doesn't belong.

The narration is great. It was actually used in a lot of our movies. This one did have it the entire time. It was so well placed that it didn't overshadow the story.

I used to have an idea about why Benny was so cool. Couldn't really articulate it until now. Benny had such a pure love for baseball that it made his heart pure. He recognized in Smalls, and probably the other kids; baseball gave him so much that it was his answer for everyone else. He saw Smalls and just wanted to share it with someone he saw really needed it.

My dad and grandpa raised me at the baseball stadium and took me even when I was still in diapers. This movie is amazing and my favorite sports movie ever for personal reasons. Baseball is life!♥️⚾️

You guys should watch My Girl if you haven't already. It's another classic 90s release but set in the 70s. I'm not sure if you'd like it but it's one or my favorites and I still watch it to this day even though I've seen it hundreds of times
As popular as football is, I think most people have more love for baseball movies. There’s something about baseball that makes you feel so nostalgic and there’s this deep love of the game, even if you don’t play or watch baseball. There’s just something about baseball🤷🏽♀️ I don’t know how to explain it.
Now you know why Benny the Jet was one of the most beloved characters. Showed kids how to be good to each other and I learned a lot how to treat my friends from this movie.
As a baseball fan, this and A League of Their Own are my two favorite baseball movies.

I was 12 or 13 when this came out. Literally on the cusp of moving from elementary to junior high. I saw this movie with my friends, and just like in the movie, we all eventually grew apart over time. Super nostalgic watch because the movie is both about those childhood friend groups, but also caught me right at the point that old "neighborhood" world expanded and I eventually lost touch with all those guys who were my best friends. Back when summers were endless and the only question that mattered was "can so and so come out to play?"
That's exactly the good memories this movie brought back to me, my brother and I are very lucky to be in contact with most of our childhood friends!
If you guys haven't watched them yet, I recommend The Mighty Ducks Trilogy. Brandon Adams (who played Kenny) was in the first two films and Mike Vitar (who played Benny), was in the second and third.

this is one of my all-time favorite childhood movies. used to watch it all the time with my brother growing up and every time I watch it, I am transported back to those good-old days when my bike was my car and I wanted to play outside with my friends all night (but I had to come in when the street lights came on). great reaction guys! excited to see if we get a Remember the Titans reaction because that is another amazing movie that I know you'll both enjoy ❤️
YESSSS CHILDHOOD VIBES, this was one of my favorite daycare VHS tapes that they'd put in to entertain us. So many memorable moments and characters in this, and the threat of the old man with the big dog over the fence was so incredibly relatable to me watching this at 8! But the lesson of realizing your fears aren't always what you think they are was a really good one for me. EDIT: Ok I was guilty of dropping that comment when I saw the video drop but then I went to bed, just watched...this movie does such a great job of capturing the way ~10 year old boys talk and interact, and just the feeling of summers; the way the filmmaking makes the beast seem larger-than-life until they are finally exposed to it is just like being a kid.

I tried to stay in touch with my friend from middle school, but it was just too hard. The last time I saw her was at her baby shower and my baby was maybe a year at the time. I'm 41 now and my daughter's 14 and about to start high school. I can't believe it! We talked on the phone sometimes and then it went to messaging on Facebook. I haven't heard from her for a long time, and I still haven't, but I haven't tried since either. Christmas music makes me tear up. It was always such a big tradition. We would go to my grandparent's house every year and at home we would wake up and open the Christmas stockings on my parent's bed and then we would get ready for grandma and grandpa's. All month long I remember sitting on my living room floor and listening to Christmas records on our record player. Those will always be true Christmas songs to me. I just can't get used to the new versions and new Christmas songs. I'm happy for new traditions with my child though. It's interesting though because my parents live in my grandparents' house now and my daughter gets to celebrate Christmas there too, not to mention Halloween, and Thanksgiving which were also a big thing at my Grandparents, also Easter, but my daughters past that age now. We still do easter, but not focused mainly on my daughter anymore. It just isn't the same anymore and not just because I'm not a child anymore.
This is one of those movies that never really gets brought up when I mention my favorite movies of all time because I always go with LOR, Avengers, and Oscar winners like Gladiator and Dark Knight. BUUUUUTTTT I would bet a large amount of money that this is the movie that I've seen the most in my life. No joke I have prolly seen this movie 100 times between watching it, showing it to someone, and mostly just a classic to throw on when the family is together.

Baseball films is one of the categories I enjoy watching and "The Sandlot" is one of those films. Great reaction, guys. You never let me me down. Next you should try "Field of Dreams," and "The Natural." Both will certainly put a limp in your throat. A real great nostalgia film is "Pleasantville" with Tobey, McGuire and Reese Witherspoon. That film is cinema magic like you've never seen before. Keep up the great reactions.
