      djghostonthewheels thank you! I’ve been all over the Midwest and Chicago is not a walk in the park. I will never forget delivering to a warehouse off 38th California. My truckers gps did not indicate of a low bridge and there were 3 low bridges surrounding that warehouse. I had to reverse 2 blocks driving through late afternoon traffic driving a 2018 Friehtliner Cascadia double bunk sleeper pulling a 53’...not fun very nerve racking.

      @internetUtuber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Schism Circle the curb is especially high. Making split second decisions in traffic you sometimes find yourself in a badway... the drive tires won't easily climb through the curb.. its easier to carefully keep trying to go forward then to back out into unempathtic or impatient car drivers. So the high curb and the Jack knifed trailer is causing a lot of pressure in the drive tires and the fifth wheel plate. He's trying to be careful. You can't judge his iq.

    A Couple of years ago I was hauling merchandise for Charming Charlie from Houston, TX to Chicago, IL. to open a new store. In all my years of delivering to Chicago, I have never been routed downtown for a delivery location, but I figured it's a department store so what could go wrong...right? The address was 520 N Michigan Ave #323 Chicago, IL 60611. I was instructed to call someone on location when I arrived and they would unload me. When I called the guy and said I was here, he said "You Are Where?" I said "At your location". He said "No your not, I don't see you!". The store was on N. Michigan Ave. but the loading area was below me on Lower Michigan Ave. The guy gave me directions on how to get down there, but all of the turnpikes that lead to Lower Michigan Ave. were clearly marked with the No Trucks Sign. When I called him back and told him about this, he said "Don't be stupid, just come on down here anyway. I told him I'm not going to go where it's clearly marked that I can't go. He called me a F***ing Moron!!! I found a safe place to park and called my dispatcher. after an hour of phone calls between the shipper, the consignee, and my dispatcher it was finally realized by the A-hole consignee that I was hauling a 53' dry box trailer. He thought I was in a 6 wheel box truck, found out later another driver from a different company drove down there anyway with a 53' dry box trailer the day before and got his truck and trailer wedged into the upper deck! Who's the F**ing moron now? When people who don't drive trucks for a living see a truck driver do something stupid, understand it's not always the drivers fault.

I drive a condo + 53ft reefer in Chicago and it doesn't always look pretty but narrow ass streets and low bridges everywhere kinda limits our preferred routes. Shit happens sometimes and it's all about staying cool and under pressure. Doesn't help having asshole four wheelers taking video of your shitty day. Put one of them in that truck and it'd be through the light pole on its way into the parked cars around the corner. Cheers drivers

I didn't want to be the so called "dumbass" who stopped, got out and asked if he was in the right place. I thought I was in the wrong place and kept driving, well the industrial road ended and I found myself trying to turn around on residential blocks with a 53 foot step deck and a long wheel based 386. My truck is tricked out so the stacks are pricy. Well I ended up bending the stack on a low tree limb and snapping an antenna off. Turns out I was at the right place to begin with. All because I was trying to be the cool guy who didn't want to ask for help. As drivers we all make mistakes at some point in time.

They will video someone (more than likely a rookie driver) trying to back into a spot at a truck stop and laugh at them instead of getting out and guiding them in. Its really sad they act like they got into a truck and automatically knew exactly how to drive it and never had one problem in their whole career. A truck stop can be very intimidating especially to a rookie hell I still have times where I second guess myself. I'm glad my instructors took us to one huge and one itty bitty truck stop and said find and said now find a spot and back into it. "A tractor being pulled by its trailer will continue to be pulled by the trailer until it is acted upon by another attempt at defying laws of motion". Trailer force upon the tractor is greater than tractor force upon the trailer, until tractor gains sufficient angle on said trailer.

Maybe he/she was forced into this position by dodging a hazard. Looking at the situation, I would have got out of the truck to see how I could reposition the tractor, asked for someone to help me with my blind spots, used my 3 road hazard triangles to warn approaching traffic, or shift my gear in reverse and backed out from the jackknife slowly. I know one thing, if I was there watching, I would have tried my best to help the driver and not sat my lazy ass in a car to record a video for TH-cam.

    I worked at a gas station as a teenager and one time this semi-truck driver pulled into my pump area, and after stopping briefly, he began to back up. Soon he was headed straight for a big stack of crated Coke bottles (the kind where the wood crate comes about 1/3 way up the bottle and the neck and mouth stick out), and was about to make a hell of a mess if he hit them.
    I bolted out of the office toward his cab to flag him to stop.
    By the time I got to his cab window, he was already alongside the soda crates and had missed them by maybe 2 inches.
    I ran up and said something like, "HEY MISTER! YOU KNOW YOU JUST MISSED HITTING A WHOLE STACK OF SODA BOTTLES BACK THERE?!"
    He looked at me cool as a cucumber, paused a moment to formulate his reply, and said, "Did I have an inch between my tire and the bottles?"
    I looked back and said, "Yeaah. ...but not much MORE than that."
    He looked me right in the eye and said (with an unbelievable cool factor that I have rarely seen in all my days) "Well, that's all I need."
    At that moment, I thought that driver dude was about as cool as it gets.

    There’s a couple things that come to mind when judging his turn. Looking underneath his trailer at the rear front axle tandem it appears his trailer swing is going to be okay on the inside. On the outside it’s not clear if there is a vehicle which would make his trailer swing out.
    Based on my observations, it appears this guy went into his turn wrong. As a truck driver there is a few tricks you can do to get through tight corners. But without the big picture and being in his position I can’t really tell why he isn’t back out of that position and trying a new approach. That tells me he is a rookie. Not to critique this driver, because we can't really see what it was he was up against at this intersection but, ...if it was as it appears to be in the video, I would have taken the tractor back out onto the street, gotten straightened out and backed up about 5 feet to restart the turn, because it appears his drivers are actually almost at the edge of that corner curb. All he had to do was just miss it, and a tight, jack-knifed buttonhook turn from where he was might have gotten him away from the curb just enough. Looked to me like he may have had the room to do that, or try. In any event, I wouldn't have tried multiple times or even once to scale that high curb, because it isn't worth tearing up the tractor drive-train, the tires & rims, fuel tank or anything else. I'm retired now, but as a former trucker who hauled conventional loads like this and oversized loads of all description, I can tell you things aren't always as they may seem. He may also have benefited from the help of someone experienced enough to visually guide him around the corner from out in the street he was turning onto. There was a lot of expensive equipment at risk doing it the way we see in this video. Most older city streets just aren't built for the kinds of, or lengths of truck / trailer combo's we use today, but good drivers can negotiate most of them with experience and a little extra care. If not, time to approach a turn like that in a different way or from a different direction. Judging by the shape of the end of that sidewalk handrail, it may not be easy coming or going through there.
