    Pléïades is a composition for six percussionists composed in 1978 by Greek composer Iannis Xenakis, originally commissioned by the percussion ensemble Les Percussions de Strasbourg. It is notable for its use of the sixxen, an instrument Xenakis had constructed specifically for the piece. The title of this work is intentionally ambiguous: on one hand, the term comes from a word meaning "many", and which alludes to all of the instruments used by the six percussionists along the four movements; on the other hand, it refers to a myth in Greek mythology: the Pleiades are the seven daughters of Pleione and Atlas even though the greatest part of his inspiration may come from the astronomy, as the Pleiades were thought to be the stars from Taurus.

    Claviers reminds me of rain drops hitting pots and pans right outside your house. It's soothing in it's own right.
    He's playing chaos in such a controlled manner.

    Flabbergasting, a triumph of rhythm. Stunning performance (did they use a clicktrack I wonder, because the perfection is beyond belief). Thanks for sharing.

      Each player is on a separate click at times. I saw it performed live and the players were following a flashing like for the tempo. Polymetric madness it was unreal! So good!!!

    Brilliant, it's lovely to finally take a look at the score. I generally assume that chamber pieces like this are probably written in 4/4 for ease of coordination, but to see how the rhythms piece together is still always satisfying. I'll never forget the acoustic beating in Métaux or the sheer volume of the piece in general from when I've seen it live. It also reminds me to revisit David Lang's The So Called Laws of Nature. Cheers!

      And you would think the 4/4 would make it easier to sync... Claviers was a nightmare. This recording is so powerful in places, I would love to experience it live.

    What r the instruments that r playing???? I'm guessing bells, vibraphones, other percussion instruments and prepared piano??????

    • @RyanPower
      @RyanPower  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Each movement focuses on a type of percussion instrument:
      Metaux (Metals) - All 6 players play an instrument called a 'sixxen', invented by Xenakis for the piece ('six', for the number of players, and 'xen' comes from his name), which 'consists of nineteen bars, of aluminum or bronze and steel, tuned microtonally (to an unequal 21-note scale built from 1/4 and 1/3 tones), laid out keyboard-style, and it is meant to be played with metal hammers.
      Claviers (Keyboards) - Keyboard percussion instruments: vibraphones, marimbas, xylophones, and xylorimbas.
      Peaux (Skins) - Percussion instruments with skins: bongos, tom-toms, congas, timpani and bass drums.
      Melanges (Mixture) - A mixture of all of the previously listed percussion types.

    Shame whoever edited this cut off the resonance after each take/split

      I did? This is the exact same as the original recording made by Percussions de Strasbourg. There is no resonance cut off.
