The Quest for my holy grail of Metallic Paint

  • I stopped using metallic paint, not happy with how they turned out. But now I figured it was time for one thorough experiment, to see if I could go back and once more call metallic paint my friend.
    In this video I test a few different type of metallic paint but also try and use them in more creative ways than I have in the past. For those of you that are new to this channel.. welcome! And please, if you are after straight forward A - Z tutorial of how to paint stuff... well.. I'm all over the place. That said, there is one or two painting tips in here, if you have the patients.
    A very special thank you to Alpha Spel - My local friendly game store - And to Nicklas for coming to my aid. Don't forget to support your LFGS
    Metallic paints tried in this video:
    Scalecolor - Metallics & Alchemy
    Formula P3 Metallics
    Vallejo Acrylic Metal Color Airbrush Colors
    Vallejo Liquid Silver
    Vallejo Metal Medium
    Green Stuff World Pure Metal Pigments
    Green Stuff World Chrome Metal
    InStar Spectrum Gold Shift
    PS. Don't throw your paint in the bin. I just did that for theatrical purposes.

    Great video - so much to unpack here!
    - that store looks fantastic
    - beautiful job on that model
    - one thing you can do since you have an airbrush is matte varnish some areas and not others, if it helps retain some shine. Metallics are very durable
    - NMM is beautiful - but difficult, impractical for army painting (imo), and since the reflections are “fixed” it can look a little false in person or when rotated (I prefer metallics!)
    - wet palette can speed up separation of metallics I find
    - P3 have big, glittery flakes imo - I like their regular paints but not the metallics
    - Scale are almost too fine at times for my liking - almost lacking in reflective ness
    - silvers tend to cover better than golds in general
    - I have to try those GSW pigments
    - haven’t seen wet blending of metallics before - I find they are really good subjects for washes, glazes, inks, even dry brushing
    - I think for the alcohol Vallejos you’d be better off having a plastic palette well with paint in one part and alcohol in the other. Smoother result if you can keep slightly thinning it as you apply it

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you :) The store is fantastic, it's a blessing to have it so close. And thanks for all the tips. To be honest wetblending metallics is a bit like trying to wetblend different jams on a sandwich... but adding the regular paints to a metallic made it workable. I'm just so used to wetblending as the foundation of my "light" - translating the zenithal prime. I just had to make it work... That is a good tip about the alcohol vs paint. I had some alcohol in a separate container, but only to wet my brush every now and again. The GSW pigments kind of surprized me to be honest. Seem difficult to blend with other paints, but as the one covering layer, I can see only positive outcome.

      @52Miniatures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad to hear it HB! There was a lot of testing! Some didn't make it to the video.. One thing... that was just one to many... was using inks or contrast paints on different metallic paints. Like highlighting a gold with silver, then slapping on a blue transparent, getting green shadows and blue highlights... If dialled in right that kind of stuff could be a lot of fun.

    Don't know if it has been mentioned in the comments anywhere. I'd try mixing the metallic paints on a dry pallet. The wet pallet adds water to metallics which they don't respond well to. Use a thinner/flow improver to mix and thin your metallic paints. Great video and hope this helps a little. Apologies if it has already been mentioned.

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Citadel metallics has biggest metal fraction ive ever saw. If you want shininess use vallejo metal color (the best metallics on the market rn) or greenstuffworld mirror paint. Also covering metallics with gloss varnish helps. And do not water down metallics - it will become splotchy. Use mediums or metallic mediums.

    Vallejo Aluminium is the only colour I use for metallics. It covers great. And then I tint it with other thin paints. Like contrast. This way you never need another metal colour. Just buckets of Vallejo Aluminium. You get the entire spectrum.

I have mixed metallic paint and pigments in with my 'normal' paints in the past especially into my canvas work...you know...just to kitsch it up and appeal to the hot rod crowd I was painting for...but on models and minis it just didn't do what I was anticipating.

    Great video. I’ve been watching your progress and this experiment has resulted in your best paint job to date in my opinion. One of the things I noticed is how your previous experiments, developed in your older videos, are still visible in elements of this piece (the base in particular reminding me of your pink/blue Stormcast) but in a far more subtle and integrated way. For a beginner like me it makes for a far more inspirational viewing experience than watching miniature painters who already have a fully developed style. Also the matt varnish was utterly transformative. Kudos!

Inspiration.. and just being allowed to have a "hobby journey" without aiming for a golden daemon of making a living out of the whole thing. This looks great, the big guy reminds me of Xerxes from 300 , your skills are out of this world
    I do think the varnishes "ruined" all the great work you did with the metallics though...
    maybe you could do the same paint job but with normal paints and see if it looks much different

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks N, personally I like the matte. But yeah, that is personal only. The metallic did look more metallic before the varnish. I was actually thinking the same thing when painting this mini... wondering what it would have looked like if I painted it with regular paints. I do think that it all would have looked a lot nicer with less metallics. Lets say I would only have done his skin in metallics and the rest with regular paints. That would really have made him "pop".. but that was not quite the exercise :)

    • @MisterTingles
      @MisterTingles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@52Miniatures i really like the metallic skin, really difficult to achieve, as you demonstrated, but reminiscent of some Chinese or Korean aesthetics. Also digging the interplay between gold and metallic purple, need to try that on one of my models. I find mixing regular shades into my metallics really difficult, they immediately lose 80% of their luster. Maybe I need to try inks instead... And GreenStuffWorld has quickly become one of my new faves in the hobby space, lots of tools i haven't really seen other companies attempt, or not execute on as well at least.
