Tourism is big business in Svalbard these days, but with increased numbers comes increased problems. The people of Longyearbyen have put together these community guidelines so that tourists better know how they should behave when visiting Longyearbyen and Svalbard.

I think Svalbard will find it necessary to severely limit or even ban cruise ships. Too many tourists pop off those ships all at once. The amount of money locals can earn by serving large numbers of tourists will never make up for the negative effects of cruise ship visits. Svalbard is very special, but it won’t stay that way if tourism takes over.
