I lived in Alaska when i was a kid and it was about like this in the summer. The summers were really fun and full of sun but winter was just cold and dark.
Got to this video via TH-cam recommendation, thank you for sharing such an unique experience that many (such as myself) would not have the chance to get otherwise.
You don't have to worry about polar bears in the town, as heaps of people would see it and theres probably an alarm. Personally i love bears and it was so cool seeing them in the wild in Canada!
I don't work for monzo but I use them in the UK. One thing you should of said about them is that they pay you a day before your money goes in. For example, If you get paid on the 28th of each month they let you have your money on the 27th. Most banks hold your money for an extra day for some reason....
I live in Lofoten, where we have a couple of months of midnight sun, and a month of no sun. It's amazing how you get used to it and confused when it's dark in the night in the summer further south 😅
I lived in Longyearbyen for over a year. It was the weirdest and most amazing experience at the same time. And trust me, the polar night in Tromsø is nothing like on Svalbard. In Tromsø the sun may be technically below the horizon but you still have some indirect light at midday.
Ben, I have enjoyed and loved seeing you, your content, your channel as a whole grow. I met you at the Hello World event in Birmingham back in 2017. It’s informative, interesting, and makes us realise and appreciate things more. Keep up with everything Ben, you’re doing an awesome job, one of the best creators on TH-cam today in my opinion.
I had the same fear about polar bears when I made a solo visit in August 2013. My only encounters with the wild in Longyearbyen were the wild birds, diving down on my head. The midnight sun was also a surreal experience, although it was noticeably colder than for you. Even in August I experienced light snow, and felt like a Scottish winter. The majority of the residents in summer escape to sunnier climates. I booked an excursion to visit the Glacier, but on our bumpy dinghy ride out (holding for dear life) they decided the rough seas were unsafe to continue.
I feel like this place would cure my depressive episodes. Imagine working all day but you still get to go for a walk to clear the mind and it's still bright.
