My Social Worker wife told me, "A vast number of the homeless don't want help," they tell her, "Nobody is going to tell me what to do." So she just writes these people off and moves on to the next one hoping she can get through. Institutionalism wasn't that bad of an idea, at least they're not on the streets shooting up.
yes, that need to happen, all this making hard drugs legal and no arresting for vagrancy or intoxication is helping no one, idiotic politicians getting these laws passed so police have no choice but to obey these new ordinances no matter how screwed up they are, when they really want to hall the druggies away, but cannot unless the druggies are openly carrying weapons, and even then are back out in the streets in days....
@RealJeep I don't want to pay taxes, but they are called laws, and they need to be enforced . They need to accept help or be sent to jail for breaking the law. It's not compassionate to allow people to kill themselves with drugs, and it's not fair to the law-abiding citizens that have to worry about used needles in the sand and trash everywhere.
It's never stopped being that, but the homeless situation has improved tremendously over the last two years. In 2022, it was much worse than today. Covid had a lot to do with it.
I say this as a nurse: You need to give these people two choices. They can pick to go through one program to get them off whatever addiction they have, force the really mentally unwell into an institution, or give them six months of a place to live and if they do not have a job, they go right to jail and get five years. This will force them to either keep their freedom and live like the rest (at least most of us) or sit in a cell. The fact that someone can pitch a tent or just sit down and claim a place where others around the areas have to pay exorbitant rents is truly insane.
_"if they do not have a job, they go right to jail and get five years"_ What a great idea. The US is at #5 highest in the world for the rate of incarceration at *531* per 100k people. Go for #1 !!! Those civilised countries like Canada (85), Australia (158), GB (143), France (107), Germany (67), Norway (55) , NZ (162) have no chance of beating the US in throwing people into prisons. Show them what "Land of the Free" means.
You couldn't involuntarily commit a mentally ill or addicted person until the SCOTUS ruled last week that removing homeless from public areas wasn't cruel and unusual punishment. The question now is how are cities going to proceed now that they can forceably remove the homeless from public spaces. Will they just throw them in jail? Involuntarily put them in treatment? Do cities have the facilities to have resident treatment care for months at a time for thousands of homeless? If not, what then? It's much more complicated than than these nurses imply.
@VNKNWNVK possible that jail can bring about sobriety,, once they are clean by force if their minds are not too far gone they can come back to sanity,
Excuse me, house keeping. free wait up call, free house keeping, free clean up, got people going around offering free shelter with meals. i'm in the wrong state
Yeah, but these guys know the ‘services’ are just lip service - shelters are dangerous and always full, there is no mental health counseling, no free drug rehab programs, etc. etc. It’s all for show, and the local homeless people know it.

California needs new leadership. They enable this. If you want a civilized society, you need rules, and they need to be enforced . They don't, and the homeless problem grows.
No, that's NOT what they ruled. They ruled that involuntary removal of homeless from public places is not cruel and unusual punishment. That's it. Now, it's up to local governments to decide how to implement that change in the law. That will take months.

Well, they're not doing most of the work. They are mainly there to protect they other people actually doing the work like the park rangers, social workers, and the maintenance workers.
Everyone else has to pay fees to camp on the beach in southern California. Homeless are sovereign citizens with zero consequences for their actions. Public intoxication, camping, illegal parking of RV's. Just immune to the laws we all have to follow
They are working in pairs for safety reasons. You have different agencies working in each group. Two park rangers, two social workers, and usually two police officers for protection. Mentally ill or an addict that's high, can pose a threat.
They need to power wash everything there. Use the ocean water. Keep going with the clean ups. One day people will realize shelters aren’t as bad as being moved, moved, moved, moved all the time. Take the damn help to get back on the right side of civilization!
What the hell is wrong with LA Police & the way to timid Park Rangers? Both act afraid? Didn't the Supreme Court pass rule against homeless? Someone needs to get some Balls!

Basically, the same police are moving the same people around time after time and sometimes even from the same places as before. This is a phenomenal waste of time, money, personnel, and equipment. So you have, say, 10,000 homeless people on Venice Beach, You clean it up and you have still 10,000 homeless people. Where are they supposed to go, home? You are just moving a problem from one area to another someplace else. They just don't disappear into nothingness. I don't know the answer.
