This is (to my knowledge) the only time we see the Defiant Class doing the thing it was designed to do...attack the Borg. That tough little ship didn't disappoint, dodging the tractor beam, blowing up chunks of the Borg ship, shrugging off damage and still keeping going.
i wouldnt necessarily say 'shrugging off damage', it had no shields, weapons, and life support was failing. but i bet it lasted a lot longer than some of the bigger and 'better' starfleet ships that were there. an attack wing of defiants could probably stand up to a borg cube.
@@lordlossize Maybe 'shrugging off damage' was an exaggeration but we do see that many bigger ships in the battle had already been destroyed or were drifting helplessly while the Defiant was still able to fight. I agree with you on the attack wing, I'm sure you've read the lore, that's how the class was meant to be used.

***** I can't remember the episode but one of TNG episodes the Enterprise was facing a D'deridex and was unable to beam aboard the people from on a planets surface and was unable to as they had to keep there shields up to avoid the Romulans getting shots against the Enterprises hull. I see you point though as it has been getting vaguer and vaguer if you can/can't beam through your shields but it also makes sense at the same time you could if you know your own shield frequency to able to beam through shields but I honistly don't know. I think you can't till the plot says you can though :P

I've always wished there was more of a pause between "We shall sacrifice ourselves for our compatriots! Ramming speed!" and "Hey guys, the Enterprise is here to save us" just to really give the moment more gravitas, more poignancy that wouldn't be chalked up by the crew to "Hey, our crazy Klingon captain tried to ram us into a figurative wall for 'honor's sake".

Sisko, Worf and O'Brien hated losing the Defiant even though she died doing what she was designed to do: fight. Picard hated losing the Enterprise-D even though saving lives and being both the symbol of the Federation and as its flagship, it's champion what she was designed to do and all Enterprises before her. Kirk and Scotty's feelings on the loss of the Enterprise, original 1701 need no explanation. We all saw the looks on their faces as she burned up over Genesis. Sure, they were all beyond elated when the Defiant-A, Enterprise-E and Enterprise-A respectively came along they still missed their old girls.

The difference is that Worf didn't see a way out here. He knew they had nothing left, could not evacuate their ship, his crew was losing life support, and wanted to go all the way to at least hinder the Borg's approach so that other ships might survive the battle. Later in the movie, Worf sees that they have _the option to win_ the battle by evacuating the enterprise, then destroying it (crusher explicitly advises the captain that "if we destroy the ship we destroy the borg.") which is why he is more hesitant to die. Remember that he is in love with Jadzia Dax during the time period of this movie, so if he decides to ram the ship he really must not have any options left.
there are a number of key differences, one Worf Was actually going to use the self-destruct after they evacuate. Two fighting the Borg on the Enterprise was suicidal as weapons were useless against them and the Borg have vastly Superior strength and personal Shields as well. Three ramming their ship at the Borg Cube might have actually done some damage. Four Riker tried to do the same thing when they were out of options

I am guessing the other Federation ships were not as badly damaged as the Defiant was. Additionally the Admiral that Captain Picard speaks to during the opening of the movie later appeared in Star Trek: Voyager, I guess he was able to get to an escape pod prior his starship getting blown up.

Damn, I've loved Star Trek since watching the TOS in syndication in the mid 70s. Every day aft school....Going home to my Grandmom's to watch it. Life was good for a kid in the 70s. Back of the pick up truck, everyone getting in the truck and going to the park on a Saturday tor run around like wild banshees.
I think they did and the borg just punched through it in usual borg fashion they're very terrifying, no amount of prep time or defense strategy is usually enough to stop them. you can only somehow overpower them either with highly advanced technology or some incredibly lucky weakness/insider information like picard has.
Not sure if the shields can be quickly toggled on/off or if they can turn off a single emitter to make a hole, but one thing is for certain... the transporter operator will have access to the sensors, and the Defiant will have a transponder that will transmit its location to other Starfleet ships in the vicinity.
The Defiant... A ship made pretty much to suit Worf. A shame that series that was planned with Worf as a captain never came into being. ...grumpy old Worf up to grumpy old hijinks blasting shit and going to red alert all the time. ...also frequently stabbing things. Awesome.

Star Trek’s military and tactical strategy is notoriously poor (for ALL aliens, not just the ones living in the federation) Starfleet “evasive manuvers” are flying in smooth, easy to follow curves. here, the borg only sent 1 cube. If they’d sent 2 or 3 starfleet surely would have lost. The cardassians regularly try to start wars against factions way stronger than them (such as the Klingons) and the romulans employ TERRIBLE spies that easily get caught. Klingons claim to be a “warrior” species, but get their @$$ handed to them on a regular basis by MUCH weaker aliens. It adds much more freedom for story writing and allows for more drama lol

The cardassians regularly try to start wars against factions way stronger than them (such as the Klingons) and the romulans employ TERRIBLE spies that easily get caught.
Klingons claim to be a “warrior” species, but get their @$$ handed to them on a regular basis by MUCH weaker aliens.
It adds much more freedom for story writing and allows for more drama lol
